1‘Flee for safety, people of Benjamin! Flee from Jerusalem! Sound the trumpet in Tekoa! Raise the signal over Beth Hakkerem! For disaster looms out of the north, even terrible destruction.2I will destroy Daughter Zion, so beautiful and delicate.3Shepherds with their flocks will come against her; they will pitch their tents round her, each tending his own portion.’4‘Prepare for battle against her! Arise, let us attack at noon! But, alas, the daylight is fading, and the shadows of evening grow long.5So arise, let us attack at night and destroy her fortresses!’6This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Cut down the trees and build siege ramps against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; it is filled with oppression.7As a well pours out its water, so she pours out her wickedness. Violence and destruction resound in her; her sickness and wounds are ever before me.8Take warning, Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you and make your land desolate so that no-one can live in it.’9This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Let them glean the remnant of Israel as thoroughly as a vine; pass your hand over the branches again, like one gathering grapes.’10To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed[1] so that they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it.11But I am full of the wrath of the Lord, and I cannot hold it in. ‘Pour it out on the children in the street and on the young men gathered together; both husband and wife will be caught in it, and the old, those weighed down with years.12Their houses will be turned over to others, together with their fields and their wives, when I stretch out my hand against those who live in the land,’ declares the Lord.13‘From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practise deceit.14They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. “Peace, peace,” they say, when there is no peace.15Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them,’ says the Lord.16This is what the Lord says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, “We will not walk in it.”17I appointed watchmen over you and said, “Listen to the sound of the trumpet!” But you said, “We will not listen.”18Therefore hear, you nations; you who are witnesses, observe what will happen to them.19Hear, you earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law.20What do I care about incense from Sheba or sweet calamus from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do not please me.’21Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘I will put obstacles before this people. Parents and children alike will stumble over them; neighbours and friends will perish.’22This is what the Lord says: ‘Look, an army is coming from the land of the north; a great nation is being stirred up from the ends of the earth.23They are armed with bow and spear; they are cruel and show no mercy. They sound like the roaring sea as they ride on their horses; they come like men in battle formation to attack you, Daughter Zion.’24We have heard reports about them, and our hands hang limp. Anguish has gripped us, pain like that of a woman in labour.25Do not go out to the fields or walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and there is terror on every side.26Put on sackcloth, my people, and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.27‘I have made you a tester of metals and my people the ore, that you may observe and test their ways.28They are all hardened rebels, going about to slander. They are bronze and iron; they all act corruptly.29The bellows blow fiercely to burn away the lead with fire, but the refining goes on in vain; the wicked are not purged out.30They are called rejected silver, because the Lord has rejected them.’

1ای اهالی بنيامين فرار كنيد! برای نجات جانتان از اورشليم فرار كنيد! در شهر تقوع شيپور خطر را به صدا درآوريد، در بيت هكاريم نشانههای خطر را بر پا كنيد، چون بلا و ويرانی عظيمی از سوی شمال به اين سو میآيد!2من اورشليم را نابود خواهم كرد شهری كه مانند دختری زيبا و ظريف است.3پادشاهان با سپاهيانشان گرداگرد آن خيمه خواهند زد و هر يک در هر كجا كه بخواهند مستقر خواهند شد.4ببين، برای جنگ آماده میشوند. هنگام ظهر جنگ درمیگيرد و تمام بعد از ظهر به شدت ادامه میيابد تا شامگاه كه هوا تاريک میشود.5آنگاه میگويند: «بياييد در تاريكی شب حمله كنيم و تمام كاخهايش را از بين ببريم!»6خداوند قادر متعال چنين میفرمايد: «درختانش را ببريد و با آن در مقابل اورشليم سنگر بسازيد. اين شهر بايد مجازات بشود، چون به کلی فاسد شده است.7همانطور كه از چشمه، آب فوران میكند، از اين شهر هم شرارت بيرون میجهد! فرياد ظلم و ستم در كوچههايش طنين انداخته است. بيماری و زخمهای متعفن آن همواره در برابر ديدگانم میباشد.8«ای اهالی اورشليم، از اين سختیها درس عبرت بگيريد، و گرنه از شما بيزار شده، سرزمينتان را ويران خواهم كرد تا كسی نتواند در آن ساكن شود.9مانند درخت مويی كه همه خوشههايش چيده شده، قوم اسرائيل نيز خوشهچينی خواهد شد آن گونه كه خوشهای باقی نماند.»

10من به خداوند گفتم: «چه كسی به سخنان و هشدارهای من گوش فرا خواهد داد؟ ايشان گوشهای خود را بستهاند و نمیخواهند بشنوند. كلام تو ايشان را ناراحت و خشمگين میسازد و نمیخواهند به گوششان برسد.11به سبب تمام اين كارهای شرمآورشان من از خشم الهی لبريزم و ديگر نمیتوانم تحمل كنم.» آنگاه خداوند فرمود: «خشم و غضب خود را بر سر اهالی اورشليم خواهم ريخت بر كودكانی كه در كوچهها بازی میكنند، بر مجلس جوانان، بر زن و شوهرها، و بر سالخوردگان.12زنان و خانهها و مزرعههايشان، همه به دست دشمن خواهد افتاد، چون من اهالی اين سرزمين را تنبيه خواهم كرد.13همگی ايشان از كوچک تا بزرگ، دروغگو بوده، به دنبال سود نامشروع میباشند، حتی انبیا و كاهنان نيز فريبكارند!14آنها زخمهای قوم مرا میپوشانند گويی چيز چندان مهمی نيست. میگويند: ”آرامش برقرار است!“ در حالی که آرامشی وجود ندارد.15آيا قوم من از بتپرستی شرمندهاند؟ نه، ايشان هرگز احساس شرم و حيا نمیكنند! از اين رو، من ايشان را مجازات خواهم نمود و ايشان در ميان كشتگان خواهند افتاد.»16با وجود اين، خداوند چنين میفرمايد: «بر سر جادهها بايستيد و بپرسيد راه درست، يعنی راهی كه خداشناسان در ايام قديم میپيمودند، كدام است؛ شما نيز همان راه را دنبال نماييد تا در وجودتان آرامش بيابيد. ولی شما جواب میدهيد: ”نه، ما اين راه را پيروی نخواهيم كرد!“17بر شما نگهبانانی گماشتم تا به شما هشدار دهند كه به صدای شيپور خطر گوش دهيد، ولی شما گفتيد: ”گوش نخواهيم داد!“»18پس خداوند میگويد: «ای قومها بشنويد! ای گواهان بنگريد كه بر سر ايشان چه خواهد آمد!19ای زمين گوش بده! من بر سر اين قوم بلايی خواهم آورد كه ثمرهٔ خيالات گناهآلود خودشان است، چون به كلام من گوش نمیدهند و دستورات مرا زير پا میگذارند.20پس ديگر چه فايدهای دارد كه از سرزمين سبا برای من بخور میآورند و از سرزمينهای دور دست، عطرهای گرانبها. من هدايای ايشان را نمیتوانم بپذيرم؛ ديگر برايم خوشايند نيستند.21بنابراين من بر سر راه اين قوم سنگهای لغزنده قرار خواهم داد تا پدران، پسران و دوستان و همسايگانشان بلغزند و هلاک شوند.»
حمله از سوی شمال
22خداوند میفرماید: «از سرزمين شمال لشكری در حركت است و قوم نيرومندی برای جنگ با شما برخاستهاند.23ايشان به كمان و نيزه مسلحند، سنگدل و بیرحم هستند و وقتی بر اسبهای خود سوار میشوند، صدايشان مانند خروش درياست! آنها برای جنگ با اورشليم مهيا شدهاند.»24مردم اورشليم میگويند: «اين خبرها را شنيدهايم، برای همين دستهايمان لرزان شده و مانند زنی كه در حال زاييدن است، دچار هراس و درديم.25جرأت نداريم به صحرا برويم و يا در جادهها قدم بگذاريم، چون دشمن ما مسلح است! ترس از هر سو ما را فرا گرفته است!»26خداوند میفرمايد: «ای قوم من، لباس ماتم بر تن كن و به عزا بنشين؛ مانند كسی كه در مرگ تنها پسرش به عزا نشسته، به تلخی سوگواری كن، چون سربازان غارتگر، ناگهان بر تو هجوم خواهند آورد.27«ای ارميا، من تو را سنگ محک قرار دادهام تا قوم مرا محک بزنی؛ پس كردار و رفتار ايشان را مشاهده و ارزيابی نما.28آنها كاملاً ياغی شده و دلشان همچون مفرغ و آهن سخت گرديده است؛ به هر جا كه میروند، غيبت میكنند؛ تمام اعمالشان گناهآلود است.29آهنگر با افزودن دمای كوره، سرب را تصفيه میكند، ولی قوم من تصفيه ناپذيرند، زيرا بدكاران از آنها جدا نمیشوند.30ايشان ”نقرهٔ ناخالص بیمصرف“ ناميده خواهند شد، چون من تركشان كردهام.»
