1Abraham was now very old, and the Lord had blessed him in every way.2He said to the senior servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, ‘Put your hand under my thigh.3I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,4but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.’5The servant asked him, ‘What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?’6‘Make sure that you do not take my son back there,’ Abraham said.7‘The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, “To your offspring[1] I will give this land” – he will send his angel before you so that you can get a wife for my son from there.8If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.’9So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.10Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels loaded with all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim[2] and made his way to the town of Nahor.11He made the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was towards evening, the time the women go out to draw water.12Then he prayed, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.13See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.14May it be that when I say to a young woman, “Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,” and she says, “Drink, and I’ll water your camels too” – let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.’15Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.16The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.17The servant hurried to meet her and said, ‘Please give me a little water from your jar.’18‘Drink, my lord,’ she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.19After she had given him a drink, she said, ‘I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink.’20So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.21Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.22When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka[3] and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels.[4]23Then he asked, ‘Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?’24She answered him, ‘I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.’25And she added, ‘We have plenty of straw and fodder, as well as room for you to spend the night.’26Then the man bowed down and worshipped the Lord,27saying, ‘Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.’28The young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.29Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he hurried out to the man at the spring.30As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring.31‘Come, you who are blessed by the Lord,’ he said. ‘Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.’32So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.33Then food was set before him, but he said, ‘I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.’ ‘Then tell us,’ Laban said.34So he said, ‘I am Abraham’s servant.35The Lord has blessed my master abundantly, and he has become wealthy. He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.36My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age, and he has given him everything he owns.37And my master made me swear an oath, and said, “You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,38but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.”39‘Then I asked my master, “What if the woman will not come back with me?”40‘He replied, “The Lord, before whom I have walked faithfully, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family.41You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you – then you will be released from my oath.”42‘When I came to the spring today, I said, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success to the journey on which I have come.43See, I am standing beside this spring. If a young woman comes out to draw water and I say to her, ‘Please let me drink a little water from your jar,’44and if she says to me, ‘Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,’ let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son.”45‘Before I finished praying in my heart, Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder. She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, “Please give me a drink.”46‘She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, “Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.” So I drank, and she watered the camels also.47‘I asked her, “Whose daughter are you?” ‘She said, “The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.” ‘Then I put the ring in her nose and the bracelets on her arms,48and I bowed down and worshipped the Lord. I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.49Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.’50Laban and Bethuel answered, ‘This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other.51Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.’52When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord.53Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewellery and articles of clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her brother and to her mother.54Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there. When they got up the next morning, he said, ‘Send me on my way to my master.’55But her brother and her mother replied, ‘Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so; then you[5] may go.’56But he said to them, ‘Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master.’57Then they said, ‘Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.’58So they called Rebekah and asked her, ‘Will you go with this man?’ ‘I will go,’ she said.59So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men.60And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, ‘Our sister, may you increase to thousands upon thousands; may your offspring possess the cities of their enemies.’61Then Rebekah and her attendants got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.62Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev.63He went out to the field one evening to meditate,[6] and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching.64Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel65and asked the servant, ‘Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?’ ‘He is my master,’ the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself.66Then the servant told Isaac all he had done.67Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

1ابراهيم اكنون مردی بود بسيار سالخورده و خداوند او را از هر لحاظ بركت داده بود.2-3روزی ابراهيم به ناظر خانهٔ خود كه رئيس نوكرانش بود، گفت: «دستت را زير ران من بگذار و به خداوند، خدای آسمان و زمين قسم بخور كه نگذاری پسرم با يكی از دختران كنعانی اينجا ازدواج كند.4به زادگاهم نزد خويشاوندانم برو و در آنجا برای اسحاق همسری انتخاب كن.»5ناظر پرسيد: «اگر هيچ دختری حاضر نشد زادگاه خود را ترک كند و به اين ديار بيايد، آن وقت چه؟ در آن صورت آيا اسحاق را به آنجا ببرم؟»6ابراهيم در جواب گفت: «نه، چنين مكن!7خداوند، خدای قادر متعال، به من فرمود كه ولايت و خانه پدریام را ترک كنم و وعده داد كه اين سرزمين را به من و به فرزندانم به مِلكيت خواهد بخشيد. پس خودِ خداوند فرشتهٔ خود را پيش روی تو خواهد فرستاد و ترتيبی خواهد داد كه در آنجا همسری برای پسرم اسحاق بيابی و همراه خود بياوری.8اما اگر آن دختر نخواست بيايد، تو از اين قسم آزاد هستی. ولی به هيچ وجه نبايد پسرم را به آنجا ببری.»9پس ناظر دستش را زير ران سَرور خود ابراهيم گذاشت و قسم خورد كه مطابق دستور او عمل كند.10او با ده شتر از شتران ابراهيم و مقداری هدايا از اموالِ او به سوی شمالِ بينالنهرين، به شهری كه ناحور در آن زندگی میكرد، رهسپار شد.11وقتی به مقصد رسيد، شترها را در خارج شهر، در كنار چاه آبی خوابانيد. نزديک غروب كه زنان برای كشيدن آب به سر چاه میآمدند،12او چنين دعا كرد: «ای خداوند، خدای سَروَر من ابراهيم، التماس میكنم نسبت به سرورم لطف فرموده، مرا ياری دهی تا خواستهٔ او را برآورم.13اينک من در كنار اين چاه ايستادهام و دختران شهر برای بردن آب میآيند.14من به يكی از آنان خواهم گفت: ”سبوی خود را پايين بياور تا آب بنوشم.“ اگر آن دختر بگويد: ”بنوش و من شترانت را نيز سيراب خواهم كرد،“ آنگاه خواهم دانست كه او همان دختری است كه تو برای اسحاق در نظر گرفتهای و سرورم را مورد لطف خويش قرار دادهای.»15-16در حالی كه ناظر هنوز مشغول راز و نياز با خداوند بود، دختر زيبايی به نام رِبِكا كه سبويی بر دوش داشت، سر رسيد و آن را از آب چاه پُر كرد. (ربكا دختر بتوئيل و نوهٔ ناحور و مِلكه بود و ناحور برادر ابراهيم بود.)17ناظر نزد او شتافت و از وی آب خواست.18دختر گفت: «سَروَرم، بنوش!» و فوری سبوی خود را پايين آورد و او نوشيد.19سپس افزود: «شترانت را نيز سيراب خواهم كرد.»20آنگاه آب را در آبشخور ريخت و دوباره به طرف چاه دويد و برای تمام شترها آب كشيد.21ناظر چشم بر او دوخته، چيزی نمیگفت تا ببيند آيا خداوند او را در اين سفر كامياب خواهد ساخت يا نه.22پس از آنكه ربكا شترها را سيراب نمود، ناظر يک حلقهٔ طلا به وزن نيم مثقال و يک جفت النگوی طلا به وزن ده مثقال به او داده، گفت:23«به من بگو دختر كه هستی؟ آيا در منزل پدرت جايی برای ما هست تا شب را به سر ببريم؟»24او در جواب گفت: «من دختر بتوئيل و نوهٔ ناحور و مِلكه هستم.25بلی، ما برای شما و شترهايتان جا و خوراک كافی داريم.»26آنگاه آن مرد خداوند را سجده كرده، گفت:27«ای خداوند، خدای سَروَرم ابراهيم، از تو سپاسگزارم كه نسبت به او امين و مهربان بودهای و مرا در اين سفر هدايت نموده، به نزد بستگان سرورم آوردی.»28پس آن دختر دواندوان رفته، به اهل خانهٔ خود خبر داد.29-30وقتی كه برادرش لابان حلقه و النگوها را بر دست خواهرش ديد و از جريان امر مطلع شد، نزد ناظر ابراهيم كه هنوز كنار چاه پيش شترهايش ايستاده بود، شتافت و به او گفت:31«ای كه بركت خداوند بر توست، چرا اينجا ايستادهای؟ به منزل ما بيا. ما برای تو و شترهايت جا آماده كردهايم.»32پس آن مرد با لابان به منزل رفت و لابان بار شترها را باز كرده، به آنها كاه و علف داد. سپس برای خادم ابراهيم و افرادش آب آورد تا پاهای خود را بشويند.33وقتی غذا را آوردند، خادم ابراهيم گفت: «تا مقصود خود را از آمدن به اينجا نگويم لب به غذا نخواهم زد.» لابان گفت: «بسيار خوب، بگو.»34ناظر گفت: «من خادم ابراهيم هستم.35خداوند او را بسيار بركت داده است و او مردی بزرگ و معروف میباشد. خداوند به او گلهها و رمهها، طلا و نقرهٔ بسيار، غلامان و كنيزان، و شترها و الاغهای فراوانی داده است.36ساره همسر سرورم در سن پيری پسری زاييد، و سرورم تمام دارايی خود را به پسرش بخشيده است.37سرورم مرا قسم داده كه از دختران كنعانی برای پسرش زن نگيرم،38بلكه به اينجا نزد قبيله و خاندان پدریاش آمده، زنی برای او انتخاب كنم.39من به سرورم گفتم: ”شايد نتوانم دختری پيدا كنم كه حاضر باشد به اينجا بيايد؟“40او به من گفت: ”خداوندی كه از او پيروی میكنم، فرشتهٔ خود را همراه تو خواهد فرستاد تا در اين سفر كامياب شوی و دختری از قبيله و خاندان پدریام پيدا كنی.41تو وظيفه داری به آنجا رفته، پرس و جو كنی. اگر آنها از فرستادن دختر خودداری كردند، آن وقت تو از سوگندی كه خوردهای آزاد خواهی بود.“42«امروز كه به سر چاه رسيدم چنين دعا كردم: ای خداوند، خدای سَروَرم ابراهيم، التماس میكنم مرا در اين سفر كامياب سازی.43اينک در كنار اين چاه میايستم و به يكی از دخترانی كه از شهر برای بردن آب میآيند خواهم گفت: ”از سبوی خود قدری آب به من بده تا بنوشم.“44اگر آن دختر جواب بدهد: ”بنوش و من شترانت را نيز سيراب خواهم كرد،“ آنگاه خواهم دانست كه او همان دختری است كه تو برای اسحاق پسر سرورم در نظر گرفتهای.45هنوز دعايم تمام نشده بود كه ديدم ربكا با سبويی بر دوش سر رسيد و به سر چاه رفته، آب كشيد و سبو را از آب پُر كرد. به او گفتم: ”كمی آب به من بده تا بنوشم.“46او فوراً سبو را پايين آورد تا بنوشم و گفت: ”شترانت را نيز سيراب خواهم كرد“ و چنين نيز كرد.47«آنگاه از او پرسيدم: تو دختر كه هستی؟ «او به من گفت: ”دختر بتوئيل و نوه ناحور و مِلكه هستم.“ «من هم حلقه را در بينی او و النگوها را به دستش كردم.48سپس سجده كرده خداوند، خدای سَروَرم ابراهيم را پرستش نمودم، چون مرا به راه راست هدايت فرمود تا دختری از خانواده برادر سرور خود برای پسرش پيدا كنم.49اكنون به من جواب بدهيد؛ آيا چنين لطفی در حق سرور من خواهيد كرد و آنچه درست است به جا خواهيد آورد؟ به من جواب بدهيد تا تكليف خود را بدانم.»50لابان و بتوئيل به او گفتند: «خداوند تو را به اينجا هدايت كرده است، پس ما چه میتوانيم بگوييم؟51اينک ربكا را برداشته برو تا چنانكه خداوند اراده فرموده است، همسر پسر سرورت بشود.»52به محض شنيدن اين سخن، خادمِ ابراهيم در حضور خداوند به خاک افتاد و او را سجده نمود.53سپس لباس و طلا و نقره و جواهرات به ربكا داد و هدايای گرانبهايی نيز به مادر و برادرانش پيشكش كرد.54پس از آن او و همراهانش شام خوردند و شب را در منزل بتوئيل به سر بردند. خادم ابراهيم صبح زود برخاسته، به آنها گفت: «حال اجازه دهيد برويم.»55ولی مادر و برادر ربكا گفتند: «ربكا بايد اقلاً ده روز ديگر پيش ما بماند و بعد از آن برود.»56اما او گفت: «خواهش میكنم مرا معطل نكنيد. خداوند مرا در اين سفر كامياب گردانيده است. بگذاريد بروم و اين خبر خوش را به سرورم برسانم.»57ايشان گفتند: «بسيار خوب. ما از دختر میپرسيم تا ببينيم نظر خودش چيست.»58پس ربكا را صدا كرده، از او پرسيدند: «آيا مايلی همراه اين مرد بروی؟» وی جواب داد: «بلی، میروم.»59آنگاه با او خداحافظی كرده، دايهاش را همراه وی فرستادند.60هنگام حركت، ربكا را بركت داده، چنين گفتند: «خواهر، اميدواريم مادرِ فرزندان بسياری شوی! اميدواريم نسل تو بر تمام دشمنانت چيره شوند.»61پس ربكا و كنيزانش بر شتران سوار شده، همراه خادمِ ابراهيم رفتند.62در اين هنگام اسحاق كه در سرزمين نِگِب سكونت داشت، به بئرلحی رُئی بازگشته بود.63يک روز عصر هنگامی كه در صحرا قدم میزد و غرق انديشه بود، سر خود را بلند كرده، ديد كه اينک شتران میآيند.64ربكا با ديدن اسحاق به شتاب از شتر پياده شد65و از خادم پرسيد: «آن مردی كه از صحرا به استقبال ما میآيد كيست؟» وی پاسخ داد: «اسحاق، پسر سَروَر من است.» با شنيدن اين سخن، ربكا با روبندِ خود صورتش را پوشانيد.66آنگاه خادم تمام داستان سفر خود را برای اسحاق شرح داد.67اسحاق ربكا را به داخل خيمهٔ مادر خود آورد و او را به زنی گرفته به او دل بست و از غم مرگ مادرش تسلی يافت.
