The council at Jerusalem

1 Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: ‘Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.’ 2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question. 3 The church sent them on their way, and as they travelled through Phoenicia and Samaria, they told how the Gentiles had been converted. This news made all the believers very glad. 4 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and elders, to whom they reported everything God had done through them. 5 Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, ‘The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.’ 6 The apostles and elders met to consider this question. 7 After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: ‘Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles should hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. 8 God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. 9 He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. 10 Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? 11 No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.’ 12 The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them. 13 When they finished, James spoke up. ‘Brothers,’ he said, ‘listen to me. 14 Simon^[1] has described to us how God first intervened to choose a people for his name from the Gentiles. 15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written: 16 ‘ “After this I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it, 17 that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, even all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things”^[2] – (Am 9:11; Am 9:12) 18 things known from long ago.^[3] 19 ‘It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God. 20 Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood. 21 For the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.’

The council’s letter to Gentile believers

22 Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to choose some of their own men and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were leaders among the believers. 23 With them they sent the following letter: The apostles and elders, your brothers, To the Gentile believers in Antioch, Syria and Cilicia: Greetings. 24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorisation and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you with our dear friends Barnabas and Paul – 26 men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 Therefore we are sending Judas and Silas to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements: 29 You are to abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality. You will do well to avoid these things. Farewell. 30 So the men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. 31 The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message. 32 Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the believers. 33-34 After spending some time there, they were sent off by the believers with the blessing of peace to return to those who had sent them.^[4] 35 But Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch, where they and many others taught and preached the word of the Lord.

Disagreement between Paul and Barnabas

36 Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, ‘Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.’ 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord. 41 He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

1 در همان زمان كه پولس و برنابا در انطاكيه بودند، عدهای از يهوديه آمدند و به مسيحيان تعليم غلط داده، میگفتند: «اگر كسی به آداب و رسوم قديمی يهود وفادار نماند و ختنه نشود، محال است بتواند نجات پيدا كند.» 2 پولس و برنابا در اين باره با ايشان به تفصيل گفتگو كردند تا بالاخره قرار شد مسيحيان انطاكيه، پولس و برنابا را با چند نفر از ميان خود به اورشليم بفرستند تا عقيدهٔ رسولان و كشيشان كليسای آنجا را در اين باره جويا شوند. 3 پس ايشان با بدرقهٔ كليسا، به سوی اورشليم حركت كردند و سر راهشان، در شهرهای فينيقيه و سامره نيز به مسيحيان سر زدند و مژده دادند كه غيريهوديان هم مسيحی شدهاند؛ و همه از شنيدن اين خبر شاد شدند. 4 وقتی به اورشليم رسيدند اعضای كليسا و كشيشان و رسولان، ايشان را با آغوش باز پذيرفتند. فرستادگان نيز آنچه را كه خدا بوسيلهٔ ايشان انجام داده بود گزارش دادند. 5 آنگاه چند نفر از مسيحيان كه قبلاً از فرقهٔ فريسيان بودند، برخاسته، گفتند: «تمام غيريهوديانی كه مسيحی شدهاند بايد ختنه شوند و تمام آداب و رسوم يهود را نگاه دارند.» 6 پس رسولان و كشيشان كليسا تصميم گرفتند در يک جلسهٔ ديگر به اين موضوع رسيدگی كنند. 7 در اين جلسه، پس از مباحثهٔ بسيار، پطرس برخاست و به ايشان گفت: «برادران، شما همه میدانيد كه از مدتها پيش خدا مرا از ميان خودتان انتخاب كرد تا پيغام انجيل را به غيريهوديان برسانم تا ايشان آن را بشنوند و ايمان آورند. 8 خدا كه از دل مردم باخبر است، روحالقدس را همانطور كه به ما داد، به غيريهوديان نيز ارزانی داشت تا اين حقيقت را ثابت كند كه ايشان را نيز مانند ما میپذيرد. 9 «پس خدا ميان ما و آنان هيچ فرقی نگذاشت، چون همانطور كه دل ما را با ايمان پاک كرد، دل آنان را نيز پاک نمود. 10 حال، چرا میخواهيد از كار خدا ايراد بگيريد و باری روی دوش ديگران بگذاريد كه نه ما توانستيم حمل كنيم و نه اجداد ما؟ 11 مگر ايمان نداريد كه با هديهٔ رايگان عيسای خداوند، همه يكسان نجات پيدا میكنند؟» 12 بدين ترتيب، بحث خاتمه يافت. سپس حضار به برنابا و پولس گوش دادند و ايشان معجزاتی را كه خدا در ميان غيريهوديان به عمل آورده بود، بازگو كردند. 13 پس از ايشان، نوبت به يعقوب رسيد. او برخاست و گفت: «برادران، گوش كنيد. 14 پطرس برای شما بيان كرد كه چگونه خدا برای نخستين بار بر غيريهوديان ظاهر شد تا برای جلال خود، از ميان ايشان قومی جديد انتخاب كند. 15 و اين درست همان است كه پيغمبران خدا پيشگويی كردند. برای مثال، عاموس نبی میگويد: 16 خداوند میفرمايد: از اين پس باز میگردم و سلطنت افتادهٔ داوود را بر پا میدارم و خرابیهای آن را بنا میكنم 17 تا غيريهوديان نيز بتوانند به سوی خدا بازگردند، يعنی تمام كسانی كه نام خود را بر ايشان مهر زدهام. 18 اين است آنچه خداوند میگويد، خداوندی كه نقشههای ازلی خود را اكنون فاش میكند. 19 «بنابراين، عقيدهٔ من اين است كه نبايد در مورد غيريهوديانی كه به سوی خدا باز میگردند، اصرار كنيم كه قوانين يهودی را نگاه دارند. 20 فقط بنويسيم كه گوشت حيواناتی را كه برای بتها قربانی شدهاند و خون و حيوانات خفه شده را نخورند و زنا نيز نكنند. 21 چون سالهاست كه روزهای شنبه در هر شهر در كنيسهها اين شريعت موسی موعظه شده است.»

نامه به ايمانداران غيريهودی

22 پس رسولان و كشيشان كليسا با تمام اعضای كليسا رأی دادند كه دو نفر را همراه پولس و برنابا به انطاكيه بفرستند تا نتيجهٔ اين جلسه را به ايشان اطلاع دهند. اين دو نفر يكی يهودا معروف به برسابا بود و ديگری سيلاس. ايشان هر دو از افراد سرشناس كليسا بودند. 23 متن نامهای كه با خود بردند، از اين قرار بود: «ما رسولان، كشيشان كليسا و برادران اهل اورشليم به شما برادران غيريهودی اهل انطاكيه، سوريه و قيليقيه سلام میرسانيم. 24 «از قرار معلوم، بعضی از ايمانداران اينجا آمده، شما را مشوش ساخته و رنجاندهاند و بدون دستور ما به شما گفتهاند كه برای نجات يافتن، بايد شريعت يهود را نگاه داريد. 25 پس، ما تصميم گرفتيم از طرف خود اين دو نماينده را همراه عزيزانمان برنابا و پولس نزد شما بفرستيم. 26-27 نمايندگان ما، يهودا و سيلاس كه به خاطر خداوند ما عيسی مسيح هر دو از جان خود گذشتهاند، به شما خواهند گفت كه نظر ما دربارهٔ مشكل شما چيست. 28-29 «زيرا با هدايت روحالقدس صلاح ديديم كه از قوانين يهود باری بر دوش شما نگذاريم. فقط گوشت حيواناتی كه برای بتها قربانی میشوند و گوشت حيوانات مردار و خون نخوريد و هرگز زنا نكنيد. اگر از اين چيزها بپرهيزيد كار خوبی خواهيد كرد. همين و بس.» 30 اين چهار نفر بیدرنگ به انطاكيه رفتند و تمام مسيحيان را دور هم جمع كردند و آن نامه را به ايشان دادند. 31 وقتی نامه را خواندند بیاندازه شاد شدند. 32-33 سپس، يهودا و سيلاس كه هر دو نبی بودند و خدا از طريق آنان به مؤمنين پيام میداد، مدتی در آنجا ماندند. آنان مسيحيان را نصيحت و تشويق میكردند كه در ايمان استوار باشند. سپس به اورشليم بازگشتند و سلامهای مسيحيان انطاكيه را به آنان رساندند. 34-35 ولی پولس و برنابا در انطاكيه ماندند تا به همراه ديگران، كلام خدا را تعليم و بشارت میدادند.

جدايی پولس از برنابا

36 پس از چندی، پولس به برنابا پيشنهاد كرد كه بازگردند و به شهرهايی كه قبلاً در آنجا موعظه كرده بودند سر بزنند تا ببينند مسيحيان جديد در چه حالند. 37 برنابا موافقت كرد و خواست يوحنا معروف به مرقس را نيز با خود ببرند. 38 ولی پولس با اين كار مخالف بود چون میگفت مرقس در پمفليه آنان را ترک نموده و با ايشان همكاری نكرده است. 39 اختلاف آنان بر سر اين موضوع به قدری شدت گرفت كه از هم جدا شدند. برنابا و مرقس به قبرس رفتند؛ 40-41 ولی پولس با سيلاس، پس از آنكه ايمانداران برای ايشان دعا كردند، به سوريه و قيليقيه رفتند تا كليساهای آنجا را تشويق و تقويت نمايند.
