1But David thought to himself, ‘One of these days I shall be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.’2So David and the six hundred men with him left and went over to Achish son of Maok king of Gath.3David and his men settled in Gath with Achish. Each man had his family with him, and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel, the widow of Nabal.4When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.5Then David said to Achish, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, let a place be assigned to me in one of the country towns, that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?’6So on that day Achish gave him Ziklag, and it has belonged to the kings of Judah ever since.7David lived in Philistine territory for a year and four months.8Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites and the Amalekites. (From ancient times these peoples had lived in the land extending to Shur and Egypt.)9Whenever David attacked an area, he did not leave a man or woman alive, but took sheep and cattle, donkeys and camels, and clothes. Then he returned to Achish.10When Achish asked, ‘Where did you go raiding today?’ David would say, ‘Against the Negev of Judah’ or ‘Against the Negev of Jerahmeel’ or ‘Against the Negev of the Kenites.’11He did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, for he thought, ‘They might inform on us and say, “This is what David did.” ’ And such was his practice as long as he lived in Philistine territory.12Achish trusted David and said to himself, ‘He has become so obnoxious to his people, the Israelites, that he will be my servant for life.’

داوود در ميان فلسطينیها
1داوود با خود فكر كرد: «روزی شائول مرا خواهد كشت. پس بهتر است به سرزمين فلسطينیها بروم تا او از تعقيب من دست بردارد؛ آنگاه از دست او رهايی خواهم يافت.»2-3پس داوود و آن ششصد نفر كه همراهش بودند با خانوادههای خود به جت رفتند تا تحت حمايت اخيش پادشاه (پسر معوک) زندگی كنند. داوود زنان خود، اخينوعم يزرعيلی و ابيجايل كرملی (زن سابق نابال) را نيز همراه خود برد.4به شائول خبر رسيد كه داوود به جت رفته است. پس او از تعقيب داوود دست كشيد.5روزی داوود به اخيش گفت: «لزومی ندارد ما در پايتخت نزد شما باشيم؛ اگر اجازه بدهيد به يكی از شهرهای كوچک میرويم و در آنجا زندگی میكنيم.»6پس اخيش، صِقلَغ را به او داد و اين شهر تا به امروز به پادشاهان يهودا تعلق دارد.7آنها مدت يک سال و چهار ماه در سرزمين فلسطينیها زندگی كردند.8داوود و سربازانش از آنجا قبايل جشوری و جَرِزی و عماليقی را مورد تاخت و تاز قرار میدادند. (اين قبايل از قديم در سرزمينی كه تا شور و مصر امتداد میيافت زندگی میكردند.)9در اين تاخت و تازها، يک نفر را هم زنده نمیگذاشتند و گلهها و اموال آنها را غارت مینمودند، و وقتی نزد اخيش برمیگشتند10اخيش میپرسيد: «امروز به كجا حمله برديد؟» داوود هم جواب میداد به جنوب يهودا يا جنوب يَرحَمئيل يا جنوب سرزمين قينیها.11داوود، مرد يا زنی را زنده نمیگذاشت تا به جت بيايد و بگويد كه او به كجا حمله كرده است. مادامی كه داوود در سرزمين فلسطينیها زندگی میكرد، كارش همين بود.12كمكم اخيش به داوود اعتماد پيدا كرد و با خود گفت: «داوود با اين كارهايش مورد نفرت قوم خود اسرائيل قرار گرفته، پس تا عمر دارد مرا خدمت خواهد كرد.»
