1[1] After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, ‘David is in the Desert of En Gedi.’2So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.3He came to the sheepfolds along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave.4The men said, ‘This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said[2] to you, “I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.” ’ Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.5Afterwards, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe.6He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.’7With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.8Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, ‘My lord the king!’ When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.9He said to Saul, ‘Why do you listen when men say, “David is bent on harming you”?10This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord gave you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, “I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.”11See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life.12May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you.13As the old saying goes, “From evildoers come evil deeds,” so my hand will not touch you.14‘Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea?15May the Lord be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.’16When David finished saying this, Saul asked, ‘Is that your voice, David my son?’ And he wept aloud.17‘You are more righteous than I,’ he said. ‘You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly.18You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord gave me into your hands, but you did not kill me.19When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today.20I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.21Now swear to me by the Lord that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.’22So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

داوود از كشتن شائول چشمپوشی میكند
1وقتی شائول از جنگ با فلسطينیها مراجعت نمود، به او خبر دادند كه داوود به صحرای عين جدی گريخته است.2پس او با سه هزار نفر از بهترين سربازان خود به صحرای عين جدی رفت و در ميان«صخرههای بز كوهی» به جستجوی داوود پرداخت.3بر سر راه به آغل گوسفندان رسيد. در آنجا غاری بود. شائول وارد غار شد تا رفع حاجت نمايد. اتفاقاً داوود و مردانش در انتهای غار مخفی شده بودند!4افراد داوود آهسته در گوش او گفتند: «امروز همان روزی است كه خداوند وعده داده دشمنت را به دست تو تسليم نمايد تا هر چه میخواهی با او بكنی!» پس داوود آهسته جلو رفت و گوشهٔ ردای شائول را بريد.5ولی بعد وجدانش ناراحت شد،6و به افراد خود گفت: «كار بدی كردم. وای بر من اگر كوچكترين آسيبی از طرف من به پادشاهم برسد، زيرا او برگزيدهٔ خداوند است.»7-8داوود با اين سخنان افرادش را سرزنش كرد و نگذاشت به شائول آسيبی برسانند. پس از اينكه شائول از غار خارج شد، داوود بيرون آمد و فرياد زد: «ای پادشاه من!» وقتی شائول برگشت، داوود او را تعظيم كرد9-10و گفت: «چرا به حرف مردم گوش میدهيد كه میگويند من قصد جان شما را دارم؟ امروز به شما ثابت شد كه اين سخن حقيقت ندارد. خداوند شما را در اين غار به دست من تسليم نمود و بعضی از افرادم گفتند كه شما را بكشم، اما من اين كار را نكردم. به آنها گفتم كه او برگزيدهٔ خداوند است و من هرگز به او آسيبی نخواهم رساند.11ببينيد، قسمتی از ردای شما در دست من است. من آن را بريدم، ولی شما را نكشتم! آيا همين به شما ثابت نمیكند كه من قصد آزار شما را ندارم و نسبت به شما گناه نكردهام، هر چند شما در تعقيب من هستيد تا مرا نابود كنيد؟12-13خداوند در میان من و شما حكم كند و انتقام مرا خودش از شما بگيرد. ولی از طرف من هيچ بدی به شما نخواهد رسيد. از قديم گفتهاند: بدی از آدم بد صادر میشود.14پادشاه اسرائيل در تعقيب چه كسی است؟ آيا حيف نيست كه پادشاه وقتش را برای من كه به اندازهٔ يک سگ مرده يا يک كک ارزش ندارم تلف نمايد؟15خداوند خودش بين ما داوری كند تا معلوم شود مقصر كيست. خداوند خودش از حق من دفاع كند و مرا از چنگ شما برهاند!»16-17وقتی داوود صحبت خود را تمام كرد، شائول گفت: «پسرم داوود، آيا اين صدای توست؟» و گريه امانش نداد. او به داوود گفت: «تو از من بهتر هستی. چون تو در حق من خوبی كردهای، ولی من نسبت به تو بدی كردهام.18آری، تو امروز نشان دادی كه نسبت به من مهربان هستی، زيرا خداوند مرا به تو تسليم نمود، اما تو مرا نكشتی.19چه كسی تاكنون شنيده است كه كسی دشمن خود را در چنگ خويش بيابد، ولی او را نكشد؟ به خاطر اين لطفی كه تو امروز به من كردی، خداوند به تو پاداش خوبی بدهد.20حال مطمئنم كه تو پادشاه اسرائيل خواهی شد و حكومت خود را تثبيت خواهی كرد.21به خداوند قسم بخور كه وقتی به پادشاهی رسيدی، خاندان مرا از بين نبری و بگذاری اسم من باقی بماند.»22پس داوود برای او قسم خورد و شائول به خانهٔ خود رفت، ولی داوود و همراهانش به پناهگاه خود برگشتند.
