The weak and the strong

1 Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarrelling over disputable matters. 2 One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3 The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. 4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. 5 One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. 6 Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8 If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. 10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister^[1]? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 It is written: ‘ “As surely as I live,” says the Lord, “Every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.” ’ (Isa 45:23) 12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. 13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling-block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval. 19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall. 22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.^[2]

Schwache und Starke im Glauben

1 Nehmt den, der im Glauben schwach ist, vorbehaltlos an, und streitet nicht über seine Ansichten mit ihm! 2 Einer glaubt zum Beispiel, er dürfe alles essen. Der Schwache jedoch ernährt sich rein vegetarisch. 3 Wer alles isst, soll den nicht verachten, der nicht alles isst! Und wer nicht alles isst, soll den nicht verurteilen, der alles isst, denn Gott hat ihn ja angenommen. 4 Wie kommst du denn dazu, den Diener eines anderen zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen? Ob er mit seinem Tun bestehen kann oder nicht, geht nur seinen Herrn etwas an. Und er wird bestehen, denn sein Herr ist in der Lage, dafür zu sorgen. 5 Der eine hebt bestimmte Tage hervor, für den anderen ist jeder Tag gleich. Aber jeder soll mit voller Überzeugung zu seiner Auffassung stehen! 6 Wer einen bestimmten Tag bevorzugt, tut das zur Ehre des Herrn. Genauso ist es bei dem, der alles isst. Er tut es zur Ehre des Herrn, denn er dankt Gott dafür. Und auch der, der nicht alles isst, tut das zur Ehre des Herrn und sagt Gott Dank. 7 Denn keiner von uns lebt für sich selbst und keiner von uns stirbt für sich selbst. 8 Denn wenn wir leben, leben wir für den Herrn, und wenn wir sterben, sterben wir für den Herrn. Ob wir nun leben oder sterben, immer gehören wir dem Herrn. 9 Dazu ist Christus ja gestorben und wieder lebendig geworden, dass er über Tote und Lebende der Herr sei. 10 Warum verurteilst du dann deinen Bruder? Und du, warum verachtest du ihn? Wir werden doch alle vor den Richterstuhl Gottes gestellt werden. 11 Denn es heißt in der Schrift: "So wahr ich lebe, spricht der Herr: Alle Knie beugen sich einmal vor mir und jeder Mund bekennt sich zu Gott." (Isa 45:23) 12 Also wird jeder von uns für sich selbst vor Gott Rechenschaft abzulegen haben. 13 Hören wir doch auf, uns gegenseitig zu verurteilen! Achten wir vielmehr darauf, dass wir unserem Bruder kein Hindernis in den Weg legen und ihn zu Fall bringen! 14 Ich weiß und bin durch den Herrn Jesus fest davon überzeugt, dass nichts von Natur aus unrein ist. Aber für den, der etwas als unrein ansieht, ist es unrein. 15 Wenn du also deinen Bruder wegen einer Speise in innere Not bringst, dann lebst du nicht mehr in der Liebe. Bring ihn mit deinem Essen nicht ins Verderben! Christus ist ja auch für ihn gestorben. 16 Lasst das Gute, das Gott euch geschenkt hat, doch nicht in üblen Ruf kommen! 17 Denn im Reich Gottes geht es nicht um Essen und Trinken, sondern um das, was der Heilige Geist bewirkt: Gerechtigkeit, Frieden und Freude. 18 Wer Christus auf diese Weise dient, wird von Gott anerkannt und von den Menschen geachtet. 19 Lasst uns also nach dem streben, was zum Frieden und zum Aufbau der Gemeinde beiträgt! 20 Zerstöre nicht wegen einer Essensfrage das Werk Gottes! Gewiss, es ist alles rein, aber es ist verwerflich, einen anderen durch sein Essen zu Fall zu bringen. 21 Deshalb isst du am besten kein Fleisch und trinkst keinen Wein und vermeidest überhaupt alles, was deinen Bruder zu Fall bringen könnte. 22 Was du in dieser Hinsicht glaubst, ist eine Sache zwischen dir und Gott! Wohl dem, der sich deshalb nicht selbst verurteilen muss! 23 Wer aber beim Essen ein schlechtes Gewissen hat, ist schon verurteilt, denn er handelt nicht nach dem, was er glaubt. Doch alles, was nicht aus Glauben geschieht, ist Sünde.
