1Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar,2and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, ‘She is my sister.’ Then Abimelek king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.3But God came to Abimelek in a dream one night and said to him, ‘You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.’4Now Abimelek had not gone near her, so he said, ‘Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation?5Did he not say to me, “She is my sister,” and didn’t she also say, “He is my brother”? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands.’6Then God said to him in the dream, ‘Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her.7Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.’8Early the next morning Abimelek summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid.9Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, ‘What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.’10And Abimelek asked Abraham, ‘What was your reason for doing this?’11Abraham replied, ‘I said to myself, “There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.”12Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife.13And when God caused me to wander from my father’s household, I said to her, “This is how you can show your love to me: everywhere we go, say of me, ‘He is my brother.’ ” ’14Then Abimelek brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him.15And Abimelek said, ‘My land is before you; live wherever you like.’16To Sarah he said, ‘I am giving your brother a thousand shekels[1] of silver. This is to cover the offence against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated.’17Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again,18for the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.

1Abraham brach nun auf und zog weiter in den Negev. Da ließ Abimelech,[3] der König von Gerar, Sara zu sich holen.3Aber in der Nacht kam Gott im Traum zu Abimelech und sagte: "Du musst sterben, weil du dir diese Frau genommen hast, denn sie ist verheiratet und gehört einem anderen."4Abimelech hatte sie noch nicht berührt und erwiderte: "Herr, willst du denn unschuldige Leute umbringen?5Er hat doch selbst zu mir gesagt: 'Sie ist meine Schwester.' Und auch sie hat das bestätigt und mir gesagt: 'Er ist mein Bruder.' Ich habe das mit reinem Gewissen und unschuldigen Händen getan."6"Das weiß ich auch", sagte Gott im Traum zu ihm. "Ja, du hast das mit reinem Gewissen getan. Deshalb habe ich dich auch davon abgehalten, vor mir schuldig zu werden, und dir nicht gestattet, sie zu berühren.7Doch jetzt gib die Frau dem Mann zurück! Er ist nämlich ein Prophet und wird für dich beten, damit du am Leben bleibst. Wenn du sie aber behältst, wirst du sterben, du und alles, was zu dir gehört."8Am nächsten Morgen stand Abimelech früh auf, rief seine Leute zusammen und berichtete ihnen, was geschehen war. Da bekamen es alle mit der Angst zu tun.9Abimelech ließ Abraham rufen und sagte zu ihm: "Was hast du uns da angetan? Womit habe ich mich an dir versündigt, dass du mich und mein Volk in diese schwere Schuld gestürzt hast? Du hast mir etwas angetan, was man einfach nicht tun darf!10Was hast du dir dabei nur gedacht?"11Abraham entgegnete: "Ich dachte, an diesem Ort hat man bestimmt keine Ehrfurcht vor Gott, und man wird mich umbringen wegen meiner Frau.12Außerdem ist sie wirklich meine Schwester. Sie ist die Tochter meines Vaters, hat aber eine andere Mutter. Darum konnte ich sie heiraten.13Als Gott mich dann aus meiner Heimat in die Fremde schickte, sagte ich zu ihr: 'Tu mir den Gefallen und gib mich überall, wohin wir kommen, als deinen Bruder aus!'"14Da machte Abimelech Abraham ein Geschenk und ließ Kleinvieh, Rinder, Sklaven und Sklavinnen zu ihm bringen. Auch seine Frau Sara gab er ihm zurück.15Dabei sagte er: "Mein ganzes Land steht dir offen. Du kannst dich niederlassen, wo es dir gefällt."16Und an Sara gewandt, sagte er: "Ich gebe deinem Bruder 1000 ‹Schekel› Silber.[4] Damit sei vor allen Leuten bestätigt, dass deine Ehre nicht angetastet worden ist und niemand dir etwas nachsagen kann."17Nun betete Abraham zu Gott. Daraufhin nahm Gott die Strafe von Abimelech, seiner Frau und allen seinen Sklavinnen weg, dass sie wieder Kinder bekommen konnten.18Denn wegen Abrahams Frau Sara hatte Jahwe im ganzen Haushalt Abimelechs jeden Mutterleib verschlossen.
