1The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.2Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.3He said, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, my lord,[1] do not pass your servant by.4Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.5Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way – now that you have come to your servant.’ ‘Very well,’ they answered, ‘do as you say.’6So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. ‘Quick,’ he said, ‘get three seahs[2] of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.’7Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.8He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.9‘Where is your wife Sarah?’ they asked him. ‘There, in the tent,’ he said.10Then one of them said, ‘I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.’ Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.11Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.12So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, ‘After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?’13Then the Lord said to Abraham, ‘Why did Sarah laugh and say, “Will I really have a child, now that I am old?”14Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.’15Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, ‘I did not laugh.’ But he said, ‘Yes, you did laugh.’
Abraham pleads for Sodom
16When the men got up to leave, they looked down towards Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way.17Then the Lord said, ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?18Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[3]19For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.’20Then the Lord said, ‘The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous21that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.’22The men turned away and went towards Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[4]23Then Abraham approached him and said: ‘Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?24What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[5] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?25Far be it from you to do such a thing – to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?’26The Lord said, ‘If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.’27Then Abraham spoke up again: ‘Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,28what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?’ ‘If I find forty-five there,’ he said, ‘I will not destroy it.’29Once again he spoke to him, ‘What if only forty are found there?’ He said, ‘For the sake of forty, I will not do it.’30Then he said, ‘May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?’ He answered, ‘I will not do it if I find thirty there.’31Abraham said, ‘Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?’ He said, ‘For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.’32Then he said, ‘May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?’ He answered, ‘For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.’33When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

1Dann erschien Jahwe Abraham bei den Terebinthen von Mamre, als dieser in der Mittagshitze gerade am Eingang seines Zeltes saß.2Abraham blickte hoch und sah auf einmal drei Männer vor sich stehen bleiben. Sofort sprang er auf und lief ihnen entgegen. Er verneigte sich bis zur Erde3und sagte zu dem, der voranging: "Mein Herr, wenn ich Gnade vor dir gefunden habe, dann geh doch nicht an deinem Diener vorüber!4Man wird gleich ein wenig Wasser bringen, damit ihr euch die Füße waschen könnt. Dann macht es euch bequem unter dem Baum.5Ich hole inzwischen einen Bissen Brot, damit ihr euch stärken und dann euren Weg fortsetzen könnt. Wozu seid ihr sonst bei eurem Diener vorbeigekommen?" – "Tu, was du vorhast", sagten die Männer.6Da eilte Abraham zu Sara ins Zelt und rief: "Schnell, drei Maß[1] vom feinsten Mehl! Mach Teig und back Fladenbrot!"[2]7Er lief weiter zum Vieh, suchte ein schönes, zartes Kalb heraus und befahl dem jungen Mann dort, es schnell zuzubereiten.8Dann holte er saure und süße Milch, nahm das gekochte Fleisch und setzte alles seinen Gästen vor. Während sie aßen, stand er unter dem Baum und bediente sie.9Dann fragten sie ihn: "Wo ist deine Frau Sara?" – "Da im Zelt", erwiderte er.10Da sagte Jahwe: "Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit komme ich wieder zu dir, dann wird deine Frau Sara einen Sohn haben."[3] Sara lauschte am Zelteingang, der sich gerade hinter ihm befand. (Ro 9:9)11Abraham und Sara waren damals schon alt, und Sara war lange über die Wechseljahre hinaus.12Da lachte Sara innerlich und dachte: "Jetzt, wo ich verwelkt bin, soll ich noch Liebeslust haben? Und mein Eheherr ist ja auch alt." (1Pe 3:6)13Da sagte Jahwe zu Abraham: "Warum hat Sara denn gelacht und denkt: 'Soll ich alte Frau wirklich noch Mutter werden können?'14Sollte für Jahwe denn irgendetwas unmöglich sein? Nächstes Jahr, zur genannten Zeit, komme ich wieder, dann hat Sara einen Sohn."15"Ich habe doch nicht gelacht", leugnete Sara, denn sie hatte Angst bekommen. Aber er sagte: "Doch, du hast gelacht."
Abraham bittet für Sodom
16Dann brachen die Männer auf. Abraham begleitete sie. Als sie die Ebene von Sodom unter sich liegen sahen,17sagte Jahwe ‹zu sich›: "Soll ich Abraham verheimlichen, was ich vorhabe?18Er soll doch der Vater eines großen und mächtigen Volkes werden, und durch ihn sollen alle Völker der Erde Segen empfangen.[4] (Ge 12:3; Ga 3:8)19Denn mit ihm habe ich Verbindung aufgenommen, damit er seinen Söhnen und seinen weiteren Nachkommen aufträgt, den Geboten Jahwes zu folgen, das Recht zu achten und Gerechtigkeit zu üben. So kann Jahwe auch seine Zusage an ihn einlösen."20Dann sagte Jahwe ‹zu Abraham›: "Schwere Klagen sind über Sodom und Gomorra zu mir gedrungen. Ihre Sünde ist offenbar gewaltig groß.21Darum will ich hinabsteigen und sehen, ob ihr Tun wirklich dem Schreien entspricht, das zu mir gedrungen ist. Ich will wissen, ob es so ist oder nicht."22Da wandten sich die Männer ab und gingen nach Sodom, während Jahwe noch bei Abraham stehen blieb.23Abraham trat dicht heran und sagte: "Willst du wirklich die Gerechten mit den Gottlosen beseitigen?24Vielleicht gibt es 50 Gerechte in der Stadt. Willst du die mit umkommen lassen und den Ort nicht wegen der 50 verschonen?25Du kannst doch die Gerechten nicht mit den Gottlosen töten, die einen doch nicht genauso wie die anderen behandeln! Nein, das kannst du nicht tun! Hält sich der Richter der ganzen Welt denn nicht selber ans Recht?"26"Wenn ich 50 Gerechte in der Stadt finde", erwiderte Jahwe, "werde ich ihretwegen dem ganzen Ort vergeben."27Da nahm Abraham wieder das Wort: "Ich habe mich nun einmal vorgewagt, zu meinem Herrn zu reden, obwohl ich nur Staub und Asche bin.28Vielleicht fehlen an den 50 Gerechten nur fünf. Willst du wegen dieser fünf die ganze Stadt vernichten?" – "Nein, ich werde sie nicht vernichten, wenn ich 45 dort finde", erwiderte er.29Abraham fuhr fort: "Und wenn es nur 40 sind?" – "Dann verschone ich sie wegen der 40", erwiderte er.30"Bitte, mein Herr", sagte Abraham, "werde nicht zornig, wenn ich weiterrede! Vielleicht finden sich nur 30." – "Dann verschone ich sie wegen der 30."31Da fing er wieder an: "Ich habe es nun einmal gewagt, zu meinem Herrn zu reden: Vielleicht finden sich 20 dort." – "Auch wenn es nur 20 sind, vernichte ich sie nicht."32"Bitte, werde nicht zornig, Herr!", sagte Abraham. "Ich will nur noch einmal reden: Vielleicht findet man auch nur zehn." – "Ich verschone sie auch wegen der zehn", antwortete Jahwe.33Dann brach er das Gespräch ab und ging weg. Abraham kehrte nach Hause zurück.
