Laws of justice and mercy

1 ‘Do not spread false reports. Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness. 2 ‘Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd, 3 and do not show favouritism to a poor person in a lawsuit. 4 ‘If you come across your enemy’s ox or donkey wandering off, be sure to return it. 5 If you see the donkey of someone who hates you fallen down under its load, do not leave it there; be sure you help them with it. 6 ‘Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits. 7 Have nothing to do with a false charge and do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty. 8 ‘Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the innocent. 9 ‘Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.

Sabbath laws

10 ‘For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, 11 but during the seventh year let the land lie unploughed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what is left. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove. 12 ‘Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and so that the slave born in your household and the foreigner living among you may be refreshed. 13 ‘Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your lips.

The three annual festivals

14 ‘Three times a year you are to celebrate a festival to me. 15 ‘Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread; for seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv, for in that month you came out of Egypt. ‘No-one is to appear before me empty-handed. 16 ‘Celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field. ‘Celebrate the Festival of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field. 17 ‘Three times a year all the men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord. 18 ‘Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast. ‘The fat of my festival offerings must not be kept until morning. 19 ‘Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God. ‘Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.

God’s angel to prepare the way

20 ‘See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. 22 If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you. 23 My angel will go ahead of you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out. 24 Do not bow down before their gods or worship them or follow their practices. You must demolish them and break their sacred stones to pieces. 25 Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away disease from among you, 26 and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span. 27 ‘I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run. 28 I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. 29 But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. 30 Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land. 31 ‘I will establish your borders from the Red Sea^[1] to the Mediterranean Sea,^[2] and from the desert to the River Euphrates. I will give into your hands the people who live in the land, and you will drive them out before you. 32 Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods. 33 Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you.’

1 Verbreite kein falsches Gerücht! Lass dich nicht von einem Schuldigen zur Falschaussage verleiten! 2 Schließ dich nicht der Mehrheit an, wenn sie im Unrecht ist! Und wenn du vor Gericht aussagen musst, richte dich nicht nach der Mehrheit, wenn sie das Recht verdreht. 3 Aber auch einen Armen darfst du vor Gericht nicht begünstigen. 4 Wenn du einem verirrten Rind oder Esel deines Feindes begegnest, dann bringe ihm das Tier ohne Zögern zurück. 5 Wenn der Esel deines Feindes unter seiner Last zusammengebrochen ist, dann geh nicht einfach vorbei, sondern hilf ihm, das Tier wieder auf die Beine zu bringen. 6 Du darfst das Recht eines Armen vor Gericht nicht beugen! 7 Halte dich von einer Lügensache fern! Hilf nie dabei, einen, der unschuldig und gerecht ist, umzubringen! Denn ich gebe dem Schuldigen nicht Recht. 8 Nimm keine Bestechung an, denn das trübt das Urteilsvermögen und verdreht das Recht. 9 Unterdrücke die Fremden nicht! Ihr wisst doch, wie einem Fremden zumute ist, denn auch ihr seid Fremde in Ägypten gewesen.'

Sabbatjahr und Feiertage

10 Sechs Jahre sollst du dein Land bearbeiten und seinen Ertrag ernten. 11 Doch im siebten Jahr sollst du es brachliegen lassen, damit die Armen deines Volkes davon essen können. Den Rest überlass dem Wild! Ebenso sollst du es mit deinen Weinbergen und Ölbäumen halten. 12 Sechs Tage sollst du deine Arbeit tun, aber am siebten Tag sollst du alles ruhen lassen! Auch dein Rind und dein Esel sollen sich ausruhen. Auch der Sohn deiner Sklavin und der Fremde sollen aufatmen können. 13 Haltet euch an alles, was ich euch gesagt habe! Den Namen einer anderen Gottheit dürft ihr nicht erwähnen, er soll nicht über eure Lippen kommen! 14 Dreimal im Jahr sollst du mir ein Fest feiern. 15 Das erste ist das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote. Dabei sollst du zur festgesetzten Zeit sieben Tage lang ungesäuerte Brotfladen essen, wie ich es dir befohlen habe. Das soll im Ährenmonat geschehen, dem Monat deines Auszugs aus Ägypten. Und keiner soll mit leeren Händen vor mir erscheinen. 16 Das nächste ist das Erntefest, wenn du das erste Getreide einbringst, das du ausgesät hast. Und im Herbst folgt das Wein- und Obstlesefest, wenn ihr die Früchte von den Weinbergen und Obstplantagen geerntet habt. 17 Dreimal im Jahr soll alles, was männlich ist, vor dem Herrn, vor Jahwe, erscheinen. 18 Das Blut eines Schlachtopfers darfst du nicht zusammen mit gesäuerten Brotfladen vor mich bringen. Und das Fett eines Opfertiers darf nicht bis zum nächsten Morgen aufgehoben werden. 19 Die Besten von deinen ersten Feldfrüchten sollst du in das Haus Jahwes, deines Gottes, bringen. Ein Böckchen darfst du nicht in der Milch seiner Mutter kochen.'^[1]

Schlussmahnungen

20 Pass auf! Ich werde einen Engel vor dir her schicken, der dich unterwegs behütet und dich an den Ort bringt, den ich für dich bestimmt habe. 21 Hüte dich vor ihm, und hör auf das, was er sagt! Lehn dich nicht gegen ihn auf! Er würde euch das nicht vergeben, denn mein Name ist in ihm. 22 Doch wenn du ihm aufs Wort gehorchst, wenn du alles tust, was ich durch ihn sage, dann werde ich deine Feinde befeinden und deine Bedränger bedrängen. 23 Mein Engel geht vor dir her und bringt dich zu den Amoritern, Hetitern, Perisitern, Kanaanitern, Hiwitern und Jebusitern, die ich alle beseitigen werde. 24 Folge nicht dem Beispiel dieser Völker! Wirf dich nicht vor ihren Göttern nieder und diene ihnen nicht! Stürze ihre Götterbilder um und zerschlage ihre Steinmale! 25 Dient Jahwe, eurem Gott! Dann wird er dein Brot und Wasser segnen. Ich werde Krankheiten von dir fernhalten. 26 Keine Frau in deinem Land wird eine Fehlgeburt haben oder kinderlos bleiben. Niemand wird vor der Zeit sterben. 27 Angst und Schrecken schicke ich vor dir her. Alle Völker, zu denen du kommst, werden in Verwirrung geraten. Ich werde dafür sorgen, dass du nur den Rücken deiner Feinde siehst. 28 Ich lasse Panik vor dir ausbrechen. Sie wird die Hiwiter, Kanaaniter und Hetiter vor dir her treiben. 29 Allerdings werde ich sie nicht in einem einzigen Jahr vertreiben, sonst würde das Land verwildern und die wilden Tiere würden überhand nehmen. 30 Ich werde sie nach und nach vertreiben, bis du dich so vermehrt hast, dass du das Land in Besitz nehmen kannst. 31 Dein Gebiet wird vom Golf von Elat^[2] bis zum Mittelmeer^[3] reichen, von der Wüste bis an den Euphrat. Ich gebe die Bewohner dieses Landes in deine Gewalt, dass du sie vertreiben kannst. 32 Doch du darfst weder mit ihnen noch mit ihren Göttern einen Bund schließen. 33 Sie dürfen nicht bei dir wohnen bleiben, denn sonst würden sie dich verführen, mir untreu zu werden. Dann würdest du ihre Götter verehren, und das würde zu einer Falle für dich.'"
