1 Samuel 16

New International Version



1 The Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.’ 2 But Samuel said, ‘How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.’ The Lord said, ‘Take a heifer with you and say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.” 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.’ 4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, ‘Do you come in peace?’ 5 Samuel replied, ‘Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.’ Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.’ 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, ‘The Lord has not chosen this one either.’ 9 Jesse then made Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, ‘Nor has the Lord chosen this one.’ 10 Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, ‘The Lord has not chosen these.’ 11 So he asked Jesse, ‘Are these all the sons you have?’ ‘There is still the youngest,’ Jesse answered. ‘He is tending the sheep.’ Samuel said, ‘Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.’ 12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him; this is the one.’ 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah. 



14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil[1] spirit from the Lord tormented him. 15 Saul’s attendants said to him, ‘See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.’ 17 So Saul said to his attendants, ‘Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.’ 18 One of the servants answered, ‘I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with him.’ 19 Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, ‘Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.’ 20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul. 21 David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armour-bearers. 22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, ‘Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.’ 23 Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

1 Jahwe sagte zu Samuel: "Wie lange willst du noch um Saul trauern? Ich habe ihn verworfen. Er soll nicht mehr König über Israel sein. Füll dein Horn mit Salböl und mach dich auf den Weg! Ich schicke dich zu Isai von Bethlehem, weil ich mir einen seiner Söhne als König ausgesucht habe." 2 "Aber wie kann ich denn gehen?", erwiderte Samuel. "Saul wird es erfahren und mich umbringen." Jahwe sagte: "Nimm eine junge Kuh mit und sag dort: 'Ich bin gekommen, um Jahwe ein Opfer zu bringen.' 3 Lade Isai zu dem Schlachtopfer ein. Dann werde ich dir zeigen, was du tun musst. Du sollst mir den salben, den ich dir nennen werde." 4 Samuel machte, was Jahwe ihm befohlen hatte, und ging nach Bethlehem. Da eilten ihm die Ältesten der Stadt voller Angst entgegen. "Bringst du Frieden?", fragten sie. 5 "Ja, Frieden", antwortete er. "Ich bin gekommen, um Jahwe zu opfern. Heiligt[1] euch und kommt mit mir zum Schlachtopfer!" Dann heiligte er Isai und seine Söhne und lud sie zum Opfermahl ein. (Jos 3:5) 6 Als sie dann kamen und er Eliab sah, dachte er: "Hier steht schon Jahwes Gesalbter vor Gott." 7 Aber Jahwe sagte zu Samuel: "Sieh nicht auf seine Erscheinung und seinen hohen Wuchs! Ich habe ihn verworfen. Denn Gott urteilt nicht wie die Menschen. Der Mensch sieht nur das Äußere, Jahwe aber sieht das Herz." 8 Dann rief Isai Abinadab und ließ ihn vor Samuel treten. Doch dieser sagte: "Auch ihn hat Jahwe nicht erwählt." 9 Nun ließ Isai Schamma kommen, aber Samuel sagte: "Auch ihn hat Jahwe nicht erwählt." 10 So ließ Isai sieben seiner Söhne an Samuel vorbeigehen. Aber Samuel sagte zu ihm: "Von diesen hat Jahwe keinen erwählt." 11 Deshalb fragte er: "Sind das alle deine Söhne?" Isai sagte: "Der Jüngste ist noch übrig. Aber er hütet gerade die Schafe." Da sagte Samuel: "Schick jemand hin und lass ihn holen! Wir werden uns nicht zum Mahl hinsetzen, bevor er gekommen ist." 12 So schickte Isai einen Boten und ließ David kommen. Der Junge war rotblond, hatte schöne Augen und sah gut aus. Da sagte Jahwe: "Auf, salbe ihn! Er ist es." 13 Samuel nahm das Ölhorn und salbte David im Kreis seiner Brüder. Von diesem Tag an kam der Geist Gottes über David und verließ ihn nicht mehr. Samuel kehrte dann nach Rama zurück. 



14 Von Saul jedoch wich der Geist Jahwes. Und ein böser Geist, den Jahwe geschickt hatte, begann ihn zu ängstigen. 15 Sauls Diener sagten zu ihm: "Offenbar hat Gott dir einen bösen Geist geschickt, der dir Angst macht. 16 Unser Herr möge seinen Dienern hier befehlen, dass sie einen Mann suchen, der Zither spielen kann. Wenn dann der böse Geist von Gott über dich kommt, kann er dir vorspielen, und es wird dir besser gehen." 17 Da sagte Saul zu seinen Dienern: "Sucht mir einen guten Zitherspieler und bringt ihn her." 18 Einer der jungen Männer sagte: "Ich kenne da einen Sohn Isais aus Bethlehem, der gut spielen kann und außerdem ein tüchtiger Kämpfer ist. Er versteht es, immer das richtige Wort zu sagen, und sieht auch noch gut aus. Jahwe ist mit ihm." 19 Da schickte Saul Boten zu Isai und ließ ihm sagen: "Schick mir deinen Sohn David, der die Schafe hütet." 20 Isai holte einen Esel und belud ihn mit Broten. Dazu gab er einen Schlauch Wein und ein Ziegenböckchen und schickte alles mit David zu Saul. 21 So kam David zu Saul und trat in seinen Dienst. Saul gewann ihn sehr lieb und machte ihn zu seinem Waffenträger. 22 Isai ließ er sagen: "Lass David doch ganz in meinem Dienst bleiben, denn ich bin sehr zufrieden mit ihm." 23 Immer wenn dieser Geist von Gott über Saul kam, nahm David die Zither und spielte darauf. So fand Saul Erleichterung. Es ging ihm besser, und der böse Geist verließ ihn.
