1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who have been called, who are loved in God the Father and kept for[1] Jesus Christ:2Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance.
The sin and doom of ungodly people
3Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people.4For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about[2] long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a licence for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.5Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord[3] at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe.6And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling – these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.7In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.8In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings.9But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not himself dare to condemn him for slander but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’[4]10Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct – as irrational animals do – will destroy them.11Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.12These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm – shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted – twice dead.13They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved for ever.14Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: ‘See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones15to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.’[5]16These people are grumblers and fault-finders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.
A call to persevere
17But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold.18They said to you, ‘In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.’19These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.20But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,21keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.22Be merciful to those who doubt;23save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear – hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.[6]
Doxology
24To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy –25to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and for evermore! Amen.
3Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. (Lu 13:24; 1Co 9:25; Php 1:27; 1Ti 6:12; 2Ti 4:7; Tit 1:4)4For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. (Ac 11:23; Ga 2:4; Tit 1:16; 1Pe 2:8; 2Pe 2:1; 1Jo 2:22)5Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved[3] a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. (Nu 14:29; Nu 14:37; Nu 26:64; Ps 106:26; 1Co 10:4; 1Co 10:9; Heb 3:17; 2Pe 1:12; 2Pe 3:17)6And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— (2Pe 2:4; Re 20:2)7just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire,[4] serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. (Ge 19:24; De 29:23; Ho 11:8; 2Pe 2:10)8Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones. (2Pe 2:10)9But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” (De 34:6; Da 10:13; Da 12:1; Zec 3:2; 1Th 4:16; 2Pe 2:11; Re 12:7)10But these people blaspheme all that they do not understand, and they are destroyed by all that they, like unreasoning animals, understand instinctively. (2Pe 2:12)11Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion. (Ge 4:5; Nu 16:1; Nu 16:31; 2Pe 2:15)12These are hidden reefs[5] at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; (Pr 25:14; Eze 34:2; Eze 34:8; Eze 34:10; Mt 15:13; Heb 13:9; 2Pe 2:13; 2Pe 2:17)13wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever. (Isa 14:12; Isa 57:20; 2Co 4:2; Php 3:19; 2Pe 2:17)14It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, (Ge 5:18; De 33:2; Da 7:10; Mr 8:38; 1Th 3:13; 2Th 1:7)15to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” (1Sa 2:3; Ps 94:4; Joh 6:60; 2Pe 2:5; 2Pe 2:6)16These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage. (Le 19:15; De 10:17; 2Pe 2:10; 2Pe 2:18)
A Call to Persevere
17But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. (2Pe 3:2)18They[6] said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” (2Pe 3:3)19It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. (Ro 8:9; Php 3:3)20But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, (Ro 8:26; Eph 6:18; Col 2:7)21keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. (Ac 13:43; 2Co 13:14; Tit 2:13; 2Pe 3:12)22And have mercy on those who doubt;23save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment[7] stained by the flesh. (Am 4:11; Zec 3:2; Zec 3:4; 1Co 3:15; 2Co 5:11; Re 3:4)
Doxology
24Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, (Joh 17:12; Ro 16:25; Eph 1:4; Eph 3:20; Eph 5:27; Php 2:15; Col 1:22; 1Pe 4:13; Re 14:5)25to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time[8] and now and forever. Amen. (Joh 5:44; Ro 11:36; 1Ti 1:17)
