1Moses summoned all Israel and said: Hear, Israel, the decrees and the laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them.2The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.3It was not with our ancestors[1] that the Lord made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today.4The Lord spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain.5(At that time I stood between the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:6‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.7‘You shall have no other gods before[2] me.8You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.9You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,10but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.11You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.12Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you.13Six days you shall labour and do all your work,14but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns, so that your male and female servants may rest, as you do.15Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.16Honour your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.17You shall not murder.18You shall not commit adultery.19You shall not steal.20You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour.21You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbour’s house or land, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.’22These are the commandments the Lord proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.23When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was ablaze with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders came to me.24And you said, ‘The Lord our God has shown us his glory and his majesty, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them.25But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us, and we will die if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer.26For what mortal has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and survived?27Go near and listen to all that the Lord our God says. Then tell us whatever the Lord our God tells you. We will listen and obey.’28The Lord heard you when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard what this people said to you. Everything they said was good.29Oh, that their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so that it might go well with them and their children for ever!30‘Go, tell them to return to their tents.31But you stay here with me so that I may give you all the commands, decrees and laws that you are to teach them to follow in the land I am giving them to possess.’32So be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left.33Walk in obedience to all that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.

The Ten Commandments
1And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.2The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. (Ex 19:5; De 4:23)3Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, who are all of us here alive today. (Heb 8:9)4The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain, out of the midst of the fire, (Ex 33:11; Nu 14:14; De 34:10; Jud 6:22)5while I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord. For you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up into the mountain. He said: (Ex 19:16; Ex 20:18; Ex 20:21; Ex 24:2; Ga 3:19)6“‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. (Ex 20:2)7“You shall have no other gods before[1] me.8“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.9You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,10but showing steadfast love to thousands[2] of those who love me and keep my commandments. (Ex 20:6; Jer 32:18)11“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.12“Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.13Six days you shall labor and do all your work,14but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. (Ex 16:29; Ex 23:12; Heb 4:4)15You shall remember that you were a slave[3] in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. (De 4:34; De 15:15; De 16:12; De 24:18; De 24:22)16“Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. (De 4:40)17“You shall not murder.[4] (Mt 5:21; Mt 5:27; Lu 18:20; Jas 2:11)18“And you shall not commit adultery. (De 5:17)19“And you shall not steal.20“And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.21“And you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’22“These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain out of the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and he added no more. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. (Ex 24:12; De 4:11; De 9:10)23And as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes, and your elders. (De 4:12)24And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live. (Ex 19:19; De 3:24; De 4:33)25Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, we shall die. (De 18:16)26For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of fire as we have, and has still lived? (De 5:24)27Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’ (Ex 20:19)28“And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me, ‘I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. (De 18:17)29Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants[5] forever! (De 4:40; De 32:29; Ps 81:13; Isa 48:18; Mt 23:37; Lu 19:42)30Go and say to them, “Return to your tents.”31But you, stand here by me, and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.’ (Ga 3:19)32You shall be careful therefore to do as the Lord your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. (De 17:20; De 28:14; Jos 1:7; Jos 23:6; 2Ki 22:2; Pr 4:27)33You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess. (De 4:40; De 10:12; De 30:16; Jer 7:23; Lu 1:6)
