1At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of his illness and recovery.2Hezekiah received the envoys gladly and showed them what was in his storehouses – the silver, the gold, the spices, the fine olive oil – his entire armoury and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.3Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, ‘What did those men say, and where did they come from?’ ‘From a distant land,’ Hezekiah replied. ‘They came to me from Babylon.’4The prophet asked, ‘What did they see in your palace?’ ‘They saw everything in my palace,’ Hezekiah said. ‘There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.’5Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, ‘Hear the word of the Lord Almighty:6the time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord.7And some of your descendants, your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.’8‘The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,’ Hezekiah replied. For he thought, ‘There will be peace and security in my lifetime.’

1Vers cette même époque, Merodak-Baladân, fils de Baladân, roi de Babylone, fit parvenir des lettres et des présents à Ezéchias, car il avait appris sa maladie et son rétablissement[1]. (2Ki 20:12)2Enchanté de la venue de ses envoyés, Ezéchias leur fit visiter le bâtiment où l’on conservait les objets précieux, l’argent et l’or, les aromates et les huiles parfumées. Il leur montra aussi tout son arsenal militaire et tout ce que contenaient ses trésors; il n’y eut rien dans son palais ni dans tout son domaine qu’Ezéchias ne leur fasse voir.3Alors le prophète Esaïe se rendit auprès du roi Ezéchias et lui demanda: Qu’ont dit ces gens et d’où sont-ils venus te rendre visite? Ezéchias lui répondit: Ils sont venus de très loin, de Babylone, pour me voir.4Esaïe reprit: Qu’ont-ils vu dans ton palais? Ezéchias répondit: Ils ont vu tout ce qui se trouve dans mon palais. Je ne leur ai rien caché de mes trésors.5Alors Esaïe dit à Ezéchias: Ecoute ce que dit le Seigneur des armées célestes:6Un jour viendra où tout ce qui est dans ton palais et tout ce que tes ancêtres ont amassé jusqu’à ce jour sera emporté à Babylone; il n’en restera rien ici, déclare l’Eternel.7Plusieurs de tes propres descendants, issus de toi, seront emmenés et deviendront serviteurs dans le palais du roi de Babylone[2]. (2Ki 24:10; 2Ch 36:10; Da 1:1)8Ezéchias répondit à Esaïe: La parole de l’Eternel que tu viens de me transmettre est bonne. Car, ajouta-t-il, nous aurons au moins la paix et la sécurité tant que je vivrai.
