1So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him.2Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold.3From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier4and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the Lord.5Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.6But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.7And quarrelling arose between Abram’s herdsmen and Lot’s. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.8So Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not have any quarrelling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are close relatives.9Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.’10Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan towards Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)11So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out towards the east. The two men parted company:12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.13Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.14The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, ‘Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.15All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[1] for ever.16I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.17Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.’18So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.

Abram se fixe au pays de Canaan
1Abram quitta donc l’Egypte avec sa femme et tout ce qu’il possédait en direction du Néguev. Loth était avec lui.2Abram était très riche en troupeaux, en argent et en or.3D’étape en étape, il retourna du Néguev jusqu’à Béthel, au lieu où il avait auparavant établi son campement, entre Béthel et Aï,4c’est-à-dire à l’endroit où était l’autel qu’il avait précédemment érigé, et il y pria l’Eternel.5Loth, qui accompagnait Abram, avait aussi des moutons, des chèvres, des bovins et des tentes,6et le pays ne suffisait pas pour qu’ils puissent demeurer ensemble, car leurs troupeaux étaient trop nombreux, ils ne pouvaient pas rester ensemble.7Il y eut une dispute entre les bergers d’Abram et ceux de Loth; or les Cananéens et les Phéréziens[1] habitaient alors le pays.8Abram dit à Loth: Nous sommes de la même famille. Qu’il n’y ait donc pas de dispute entre nous, entre mes bergers et les tiens.9Séparons-nous plutôt. Tout le pays est à ta disposition. Si tu vas à gauche, j’irai à droite, et si tu vas à droite, j’irai à gauche.10Loth regarda et vit toute la plaine du Jourdain qui s’étendait jusqu’à Tsoar: avant que l’Eternel eût détruit Sodome et Gomorrhe[2], elle était comme le jardin de l’Eternel, comme la terre d’Egypte. (Ge 18:1; Ge 19:1)11Loth choisit donc pour lui toute la plaine du Jourdain et il se dirigea vers l’est. Ainsi, ils se séparèrent l’un de l’autre.12Abram se fixa dans le pays de Canaan, et Loth s’établit au milieu des villes de la plaine, dressant ses tentes jusqu’à Sodome.13Or, les gens de Sodome étaient mauvais, ils commettaient beaucoup de péchés contre l’Eternel.

14L’Eternel dit à Abram après que Loth se fut séparé de lui: Lève les yeux et regarde depuis l’endroit où tu es, vers le nord, le sud, l’est et l’ouest:15tout le pays que tu vois, je te le donnerai, à toi et à ta descendance pour toujours.16Je rendrai ta descendance aussi nombreuse que les grains de poussière de la terre; si l’on peut compter les grains de poussière de la terre, alors on pourra aussi compter ta descendance.17Lève-toi, parcours le pays en long et en large car je te le donnerai.18Alors Abram déplaça son campement et vint se fixer près des chênes de Mamré aux environs d’Hébron[3], et il bâtit là un autel à l’Eternel.
