For the director of music. To be played on stringed instruments. A maskil of David when the men from Ziph had gone to Saul. They had said, ‘Isn’t David hiding among us?’
1God, save me by your power. Set me free by your might.2God, hear my prayer. Listen to what I’m saying.3Enemies who are proud are attacking me. Mean people are trying to kill me. They don’t care about God.4But I know that God helps me. The Lord is the one who keeps me going.5My enemies tell lies about me. Do to them the evil things they planned against me. God, be faithful and destroy them.6I will sacrifice an offering to you just because I choose to. LORD, I will praise your name because it is good.7You have saved me from all my troubles. With my own eyes I have seen you win the battle over my enemies.
Psalm 54

The Lord Upholds My Life
1To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Maskil[1] of David, when the Ziphites went and told Saul, “Is not David hiding among us?” O God, save me by your name, and vindicate me by your might. (1Sa 23:19; 1Sa 26:1; Ps 4:1; Ps 5:11; Ps 52:9)2O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth. (Ps 55:1)3For strangers[2] have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves. (1Sa 23:15; Ps 18:44; Ps 86:14; Ps 144:7; Isa 25:5)4Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life. (Ps 118:7)5He will return the evil to my enemies; in your faithfulness put an end to them. (Ps 89:49; Ps 143:12)6With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good. (Ps 52:9)7For he has delivered me from every trouble, and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies. (Ps 59:10; Ps 92:11; Ps 112:8; Ps 118:7)
