Psalm 4

New International Reader’s Version

1 My faithful God, answer me when I call out to you. Give me rest from my trouble. Have mercy on me. Hear my prayer.2 How long will you people turn my glory into shame? How long will you love what will certainly fail you? How long will you pray to statues of gods?3 Remember that the LORD has set apart his faithful servant for himself. The LORD hears me when I call out to him.4 Tremble and do not sin. When you are in bed, look deep down inside yourself and be silent.5 Offer to the LORD the sacrifices that godly people offer. Trust in him.6 LORD, many are asking, ‘Who will make us successful?’ LORD, may you do good things for us.7 Fill my heart with joy when the people have lots of corn and fresh wine.8 In peace I will lie down and sleep. LORD, you alone keep me safe.

Psalm 4

English Standard Version

1 To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! (Job 36:16; Ps 61:1; Isa 54:17; Jer 23:6; Hab 3:19)2 O men,[1] how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? (Ps 5:6)3 But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him. (Ex 11:7; Ps 50:5)4 Be angry,[2] and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. (Ps 42:8; Ps 77:6; Eph 4:26)5 Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord. (De 33:19; Ps 37:3; Ps 51:19; Ps 62:8)6 There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!” (Nu 6:26; Ps 31:16; Ps 67:1; Ps 80:3; Ps 80:7; Ps 80:19; Ps 89:15; Ps 119:135)7 You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. (Isa 9:3; Isa 16:10; Jer 48:38)8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. (Le 25:18; Le 26:5; De 33:28; Ps 3:5; Ps 16:9)
