Psalm 23

New International Reader’s Version



1 The LORD is my shepherd. He gives me everything I need. 2 He lets me lie down in fields of green grass. He leads me beside quiet waters. 3 He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right paths for the honour of his name. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid. You are with me. Your shepherd’s rod and staff comfort me. 5 You prepare a feast for me right in front of my enemies. You pour oil on my head. My cup runs over. 6 I am sure that your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life. And I will live in the house of the LORD for ever.

1 A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. (Ps 34:9; Ps 78:52; Ps 80:1; Isa 40:11; Jer 31:10; Eze 34:11; Eze 34:23; Mt 6:33; Joh 10:11; Heb 13:20; 1Pe 2:25; 1Pe 5:4) 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.[1] (Eze 34:14; Joh 10:9) 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness[2] for his name’s sake. (Ps 5:8; Ps 19:7; Ps 25:11; Ps 31:3; Ps 79:9; Ps 109:21; Ps 139:10; Ps 139:24; Ps 143:10; Pr 4:11; Pr 8:20; Isa 40:11; Isa 49:10; Eze 20:9; Eze 20:14) 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[3] I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
