Johannes der Täufer – Jesu Wegbereiter

1 In jener Zeit trat Johannes der Täufer in der Wüste von Judäa auf und verkündete: (Mk 1,2; Lk 3,1; Joh 1,19) 2 »Kehrt um! Denn das Himmelreich ist nahe.« 3 Johannes war der, von dem der Prophet Jesaja sagt^[1]: »Hört, eine Stimme ruft in der Wüste: ›Bereitet dem Herrn den Weg! Ebnet seine Pfade!‹«^[2] 4 Johannes trug ein Gewand aus Kamelhaar und um seine Hüften einen Ledergürtel; Heuschrecken und wilder Honig waren seine Nahrung. 5 Die Einwohner Jerusalems sowie die Bevölkerung von ganz Judäa und von der gesamten Jordangegend gingen zu ihm in die Wüste; 6 sie bekannten ihre Sünden und ließen sich^[3] im Jordan von ihm taufen. 7 Es kamen auch viele Pharisäer und Sadduzäer zu Johannes, um sich taufen zu lassen^[4]. Zu ihnen sagte er: »Ihr Schlangenbrut! Wer hat euch auf den Gedanken gebracht, ihr könntet dem kommenden Gericht^[5] entgehen? 8 Bringt Frucht, die zeigt, dass es euch mit der Umkehr ernst ist^[6], 9 und meint nicht, ihr könntet euch darauf berufen, dass ihr Abraham zum Vater habt. Ich sage euch: Gott kann Abraham aus diesen Steinen hier Kinder erwecken. 10 Die Axt ist schon an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt, und jeder Baum, der keine guten Früchte bringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen. 11 Ich taufe euch mit Wasser als Bestätigung für eure Umkehr. Der aber, der nach mir kommt, ist stärker als ich; ich bin es nicht einmal wert, ihm die Sandalen auszuziehen^[7]. Er wird euch mit^[8] dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen. 12 Er hat die Worfschaufel in der Hand und wird damit die Spreu vom Weizen trennen^[9]. Den Weizen wird er in die Scheune bringen, die Spreu aber wird er in nie erlöschendem Feuer verbrennen.«

13 Auch Jesus kam aus Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen. (Mk 1,9; Lk 3,21; Joh 1,29) 14 Johannes wehrte sich entschieden dagegen: »Ich hätte es nötig, mich von dir taufen zu lassen, und du kommst zu mir?« 15 Aber Jesus gab ihm zur Antwort: »Lass es für diesmal geschehen! Es ist richtig so, denn wir sollen alles erfüllen, was Gottes Gerechtigkeit fordert^[10].« Da willigte Johannes ein. 16 In dem Augenblick, als Jesus nach seiner Taufe aus dem Wasser stieg,^[11] öffnete sich über ihm^[12] der Himmel, und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube auf sich herabkommen. 17 Und aus dem Himmel sprach eine Stimme: »Dies ist mein geliebter Sohn, an ihm habe ich Freude.«

John the Baptist prepares the way

1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.” ’ (Jes 40,3) 4 John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt round his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the River Jordan. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising, he said to them: ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 ‘I baptise you with^[1] water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptise you with^[2] the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, ‘I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?’ 15 Jesus replied, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then John consented. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’
