1Der HERR sagte zu Josua:2»Richte den Israeliten folgendes aus: ›Bestimmt nun Zufluchtsstädte, so wie ich es euch damals durch Mose befohlen habe.3Dorthin kann jeder fliehen, der einen Menschen unbeabsichtigt und ohne Vorsatz getötet hat, um Schutz vor dem Bluträcher zu finden.4Wer in einer dieser Städte Zuflucht sucht, soll beim Gerichtsplatz am Stadttor den führenden Männern seinen Fall schildern. Diese sollen ihn in der Stadt aufnehmen und ihm eine Unterkunft zuweisen, in der er bleiben kann.5Wenn ein Verwandter des Getöteten[1] ihn bis dorthin verfolgt, dann darf der Beschuldigte nicht ausgeliefert werden. Das gilt allerdings nur, wenn er seinen Mitmenschen tatsächlich ohne Vorsatz und nicht aus Hass getötet hat.6Er soll in der Stadt bleiben, bis sein Fall vor Gericht entschieden worden ist. Wenn er freigesprochen wird, soll er sich bis zum Tod des amtierenden Hohenpriesters in der Zufluchtsstadt aufhalten. Danach darf er in die Stadt, aus der er geflohen ist, und zu seiner Familie zurückkehren.‹«7Die Israeliten bestimmten[2] folgende Zufluchtsstädte: Westlich des Jordans waren es Kedesch in Galiläa im Bergland von Naftali, Sichem im Bergland von Efraim und Kirjat-Arba – das heutige Hebron – im Bergland von Juda.8Östlich des Jordans[3] bestimmten sie Bezer im Steppenhochland des Stammes Ruben, Ramot in der Landschaft Gilead im Stammesgebiet von Gad sowie Golan in der Landschaft Baschan im Gebiet des Stammes Manasse.9Diese Städte wurden für alle Israeliten und für die Ausländer, die unter ihnen lebten, als Zufluchtsstädte ausgewählt. Jeder, der unbeabsichtigt jemand getötet hatte, durfte dorthin fliehen. Hier war er vor dem Bluträcher sicher, bis das Gericht der Stadt über seinen Fall entschieden hatte[4].

Cities of refuge
1Then the Lord said to Joshua:2‘Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses,3so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.4When they flee to one of these cities, they are to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state their case before the elders of that city. Then the elders are to admit the fugitive into their city and provide a place to live among them.5If the avenger of blood comes in pursuit, the elders must not surrender the fugitive, because the fugitive killed their neighbour unintentionally and without malice aforethought.6They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled.’7So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.8East of the Jordan (on the other side from Jericho) they designated Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh.9Any of the Israelites or any foreigner residing among them who killed someone accidentally could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
