1Zu der Zeit kam Johannes der Täufer und predigte in der Wüste von Judäa (Mk 1,2; Lk 3,1; Joh 1,6; Joh 1,23)2und sprach: Tut Buße, denn das Himmelreich ist nahe herbeigekommen! (Mt 4,17; Mt 10,7; Apg 13,24; Apg 19,4; Röm 12,2)3Denn dieser ist’s, von dem der Prophet Jesaja gesprochen und gesagt hat: »Es ist eine Stimme eines Predigers[1] in der Wüste: Bereitet dem Herrn den Weg und macht eben seine Steige!« (Joh 1,23)4Er aber, Johannes, hatte ein Gewand aus Kamelhaaren an und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Lenden; seine Speise aber waren Heuschrecken und wilder Honig. (2Kön 1,8)5Da ging zu ihm hinaus Jerusalem und ganz Judäa und das ganze Land am Jordan6und ließen sich taufen von ihm im Jordan und bekannten ihre Sünden.7Als er nun viele Pharisäer und Sadduzäer sah zu seiner Taufe kommen, sprach er zu ihnen: Ihr Otterngezücht, wer hat euch gewiss gemacht, dass ihr dem künftigen Zorn entrinnen werdet? (Mt 23,33)8Seht zu, bringt rechtschaffene Frucht der Buße!9Denkt nur nicht, dass ihr bei euch sagen könntet: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater. Denn ich sage euch: Gott vermag dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder zu erwecken. (Joh 8,33; Joh 8,39; Röm 2,28; Röm 4,12)10Es ist schon die Axt den Bäumen an die Wurzel gelegt. Darum: Jeder Baum, der nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen. (Mt 7,19; Lk 13,6)11Ich taufe euch mit Wasser zur Buße; der aber nach mir kommt, ist stärker als ich, und ich bin nicht wert, ihm die Schuhe zu tragen; der wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen. Jesu Taufe
13Zu der Zeit kam Jesus aus Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, dass er sich von ihm taufen ließe. (Mk 1,9; Lk 3,21; Joh 1,32)14Aber Johannes wehrte ihm und sprach: Ich bedarf dessen, dass ich von dir getauft werde, und du kommst zu mir? (Joh 13,6)15Jesus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Lass es jetzt zu! Denn so gebührt es uns, alle Gerechtigkeit zu erfüllen. Da ließ er’s ihm zu.16Und als Jesus getauft war, stieg er alsbald herauf aus dem Wasser. Und siehe, da tat sich ihm der Himmel auf, und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube herabfahren und über sich kommen. (Jes 11,2)17Und siehe, eine Stimme aus dem Himmel sprach: Dies ist mein lieber Sohn, an dem ich Wohlgefallen habe. (Ps 2,7; Jes 42,1; Mt 16,16; Mt 17,5)

John the Baptist prepares the way
1In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea2and saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’3This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.” ’ (Jes 40,3)4John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt round his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.5People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.6Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the River Jordan.7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising, he said to them: ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?8Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.9And do not think you can say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.10The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.11‘I baptise you with[1] water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptise you with[2] the Holy Spirit and fire.12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’
The baptism of Jesus
13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John.14But John tried to deter him, saying, ‘I need to be baptised by you, and do you come to me?’15Jesus replied, ‘Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then John consented.16As soon as Jesus was baptised, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.17And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’
