Die Frage des Täufers

1 Und es begab sich, als Jesus diese Gebote an seine zwölf Jünger beendet hatte, ging er von dort weiter, zu lehren und zu predigen in ihren Städten. (Lk 7,18) 2 Da aber Johannes im Gefängnis von den Werken Christi hörte, sandte er seine Jünger (Mt 14,3) 3 und ließ ihn fragen: Bist du, der da kommen soll, oder sollen wir auf einen andern warten? (Mt 3,11) 4 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Geht hin und sagt Johannes wieder, was ihr hört und seht: 5 Blinde sehen und Lahme gehen, Aussätzige werden rein und Taube hören, Tote stehen auf und Armen wird das Evangelium gepredigt; (Jes 26,19; Jes 35,5; Jes 61,1) 6 und selig ist, wer sich nicht an mir ärgert. Jesu Zeugnis über den Täufer

7 Als sie fortgingen, fing Jesus an, zu dem Volk über Johannes zu reden: Was wolltet ihr sehen, als ihr in die Wüste hinausgegangen seid? Ein Schilfrohr, das vom Wind bewegt wird? (Mt 3,1; Mt 3,5; Lk 7,24) 8 Oder was wolltet ihr sehen, als ihr hinausgegangen seid? Einen Menschen in weichen Kleidern? Siehe, die weiche Kleider tragen, sind in den Häusern der Könige. 9 Oder was wolltet ihr sehen, als ihr hinausgegangen seid? Einen Propheten? Ja, ich sage euch: Er ist mehr als ein Prophet. (Mt 21,26; Lk 1,76) 10 Dieser ist’s, von dem geschrieben steht: »Siehe, ich sende meinen Boten vor dir her, der deinen Weg vor dir bereiten soll.« (2Mo 23,20; Mal 3,1; Mk 1,2) 11 Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Unter allen, die von einer Frau geboren sind, ist keiner aufgetreten, der größer ist als Johannes der Täufer; der aber der Kleinste ist im Himmelreich, ist größer als er. 12 Aber von den Tagen Johannes des Täufers bis heute leidet das Himmelreich Gewalt, und die Gewalt tun, reißen es an sich. (Lk 16,16) 13 Denn alle Propheten und das Gesetz haben geweissagt bis hin zu Johannes; (1Petr 1,10) 14 und wenn ihr’s annehmen wollt: Er ist Elia, der da kommen soll. (Mal 3,23; Mt 17,10) 15 Wer Ohren hat, der höre! (Mt 13,9; Mt 13,43; Offb 2,7) 16 Mit wem soll ich aber dieses Geschlecht vergleichen? Es ist den Kindern gleich, die auf dem Markt sitzen und rufen den andern zu: 17 Wir haben euch aufgespielt und ihr habt nicht getanzt; wir haben Klagelieder gesungen und ihr habt nicht geweint. (Joh 5,35) 18 Denn Johannes ist gekommen, aß nicht und trank nicht, und sie sagen: Er ist von einem Dämon besessen. (Mt 3,4; Lk 1,15) 19 Der Menschensohn ist gekommen, isst und trinkt, und sie sagen: Siehe, dieser Mensch ist ein Fresser und Weinsäufer, ein Freund der Zöllner und Sünder! Weherufe über galiläische Städte

20 Da fing er an, die Städte zu schelten, in denen die meisten seiner Taten geschehen waren; denn sie hatten nicht Buße getan: (Lk 10,13) 21 Wehe dir, Chorazin! Weh dir, Betsaida! Wären in Tyrus und Sidon die Taten geschehen, die bei euch geschehen sind, sie hätten längst in Sack und Asche Buße getan. (Joe 4,4; Jon 3,6) 22 Doch ich sage euch: Es wird Tyrus und Sidon erträglicher ergehen am Tage des Gerichts als euch. 23 Und du, Kapernaum, wirst du bis zum Himmel erhoben werden? Du wirst bis zur Hölle hinabfahren. Denn wenn in Sodom die Taten geschehen wären, die in dir geschehen sind, es stünde noch heutigen Tages. (Jes 14,13; Mt 4,13; Mt 8,5; Mt 9,1)

Jesu Lobpreis. Der Heilandsruf

25 Zu der Zeit fing Jesus an und sprach: Ich preise dich, Vater, Herr des Himmels und der Erde, dass du dies Weisen und Klugen verborgen hast und hast es Unmündigen offenbart. (Jes 29,14; Lk 10,21; Joh 17,25; 1Kor 1,18)

Jesus and John the Baptist

1 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.^[1] 2 When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’ 4 Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy^[2] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’ 7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written: ‘ “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.” (Mal 3,1) 11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,^[3] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear. 16 ‘To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the market-places and calling out to others: 17 ‘ “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.” 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon.” 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.’

Woe on unrepentant towns

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 ‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.^[4] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.’

The Father revealed in the Son

25 At that time Jesus said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 27 ‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’
