1 Nachdem sie aber durch Amphipolis und Apollonia gereist waren, kamen sie nach Thessalonich; da war eine Synagoge der Juden. (1Thess 2,2)2 Wie nun Paulus gewohnt war, ging er zu ihnen hinein und redete mit ihnen an drei Sabbaten aus der Schrift,3 tat sie ihnen auf und legte ihnen dar: Der Christus musste leiden und auferstehen von den Toten, und dieser Jesus, den ich euch verkündige, ist der Christus. (Lk 24,26; Lk 24,45; Apg 26,23)4 Einige von ihnen ließen sich überzeugen und schlossen sich Paulus und Silas an, auch eine große Menge von gottesfürchtigen Griechen, dazu nicht wenige von den angesehensten Frauen. (1Thess 1,1; 2Thess 1,1)5 Aber die Juden ereiferten sich und holten vom Marktplatz einige üble Männer, rotteten sich zusammen und richteten einen Aufruhr in der Stadt an und zogen vor das Haus Jasons und suchten sie, um sie vor das Volk zu führen. (Röm 16,21)6 Sie fanden sie aber nicht. Da schleiften sie Jason und einige Brüder vor die Oberen der Stadt und schrien: Diese, die den ganzen Erdkreis erregen, sind auch hierher gekommen; (Apg 16,20; Apg 24,5)7 die beherbergt Jason. Und diese alle handeln gegen des Kaisers Gebote und sagen, ein anderer sei König, nämlich Jesus. (Lk 23,2; Joh 19,12)8 So brachten sie das Volk auf und die Oberen der Stadt, die das hörten.9 Und erst nachdem ihnen von Jason und den andern Bürgschaft geleistet war, ließen sie sie frei.10 Die Brüder aber schickten noch in derselben Nacht Paulus und Silas nach Beröa. Als sie dahin kamen, gingen sie in die Synagoge der Juden.11 Diese aber waren freundlicher als die in Thessalonich; sie nahmen das Wort bereitwillig auf und forschten täglich in der Schrift, ob sich’s so verhielte. (Joh 5,39)12 So glaubten nun viele von ihnen, darunter nicht wenige von den vornehmen griechischen Frauen und Männern.13 Als aber die Juden von Thessalonich erfuhren, dass auch in Beröa das Wort Gottes von Paulus verkündigt wurde, kamen sie auch dorthin und erregten Unruhe und verwirrten das Volk.14 Da schickten die Brüder Paulus sogleich weiter, dass er ginge bis an das Meer; Silas und Timotheus aber blieben da. (Apg 15,40; Apg 16,1)15 Die aber Paulus geleiteten, brachten ihn bis nach Athen. Und nachdem sie den Auftrag empfangen hatten, dass Silas und Timotheus so schnell wie möglich zu ihm kommen sollten, kehrten sie zurück.16 Als aber Paulus in Athen auf sie wartete, ergrimmte sein Geist in ihm, da er die Stadt voller Götzenbilder sah.17 Und er redete zu den Juden und den Gottesfürchtigen in der Synagoge und täglich auf dem Markt zu denen, die sich einfanden.18 Einige Philosophen aber, Epikureer und Stoiker[1], stritten mit ihm. Und einige von ihnen sprachen: Was will dieser Schwätzer sagen? Andere aber: Es sieht aus, als wolle er fremde Götter verkündigen. Denn er verkündigte das Evangelium von Jesus und von der Auferstehung.19 Sie nahmen ihn aber mit und führten ihn auf den Areopag[2] und sprachen: Können wir erfahren, was das für eine neue Lehre ist, die du lehrst?20 Denn du bringst etwas Neues vor unsere Ohren; nun wollen wir gerne wissen, was das ist.21 Alle Athener nämlich, auch die Fremden, die bei ihnen wohnten, hatten nichts anderes im Sinn, als etwas Neues zu sagen oder zu hören.22 Paulus aber stand mitten auf dem Areopag und sprach: Ihr Männer von Athen, ich sehe, dass ihr die Götter in allen Stücken sehr verehrt.23 Denn ich bin umhergegangen und habe eure Heiligtümer angesehen und fand einen Altar, auf dem stand geschrieben: Dem unbekannten Gott. Nun verkündige ich euch, was ihr unwissend verehrt.24 Gott, der die Welt gemacht hat und alles, was darinnen ist, er, der Herr des Himmels und der Erde, wohnt nicht in Tempeln, die mit Händen gemacht sind. (1Kön 8,27; Apg 7,48)25 Auch lässt er sich nicht von Menschenhänden dienen wie einer, der etwas nötig hätte, da er doch selber jedermann Leben und Odem und alles gibt. (Ps 50,9)26 Und er hat aus einem Menschen das ganze Menschengeschlecht gemacht, damit sie auf dem ganzen Erdboden wohnen, und er hat festgesetzt, wie lange sie bestehen und in welchen Grenzen sie wohnen sollen, (5Mo 32,8; Hi 12,23)27 dass sie Gott suchen sollen, ob sie ihn wohl fühlen und finden könnten; und fürwahr, er ist nicht ferne von einem jeden unter uns. (Jes 55,6; Jer 29,12)28 Denn in ihm leben, weben und sind wir; wie auch einige Dichter bei euch gesagt haben: Wir sind seines Geschlechts.29 Da wir nun göttlichen Geschlechts sind, sollen wir nicht meinen, die Gottheit sei gleich den goldenen, silbernen und steinernen Bildern, durch menschliche Kunst und Gedanken gemacht. (1Mo 1,27; Jes 40,18; Apg 19,26)30 Zwar hat Gott über die Zeit der Unwissenheit hinweggesehen; nun aber gebietet er den Menschen, dass alle an allen Enden Buße tun. (Lk 24,47; Apg 14,16)31 Denn er hat einen Tag festgesetzt, an dem er richten will den Erdkreis mit Gerechtigkeit durch einen Mann, den er dazu bestimmt hat und den er vor allen Menschen bestätigt hat, indem er ihn von den Toten auferweckt hat. (Ps 96,13; Ps 98,9; Mt 25,31; Apg 10,42)32 Als sie von der Auferstehung der Toten hörten, begannen die einen zu spotten; die andern aber sprachen: Wir wollen dich darüber ein andermal weiterhören. (1Kor 15,12)33 So ging Paulus weg aus ihrer Mitte.34 Einige Männer aber schlossen sich ihm an und wurden gläubig; unter ihnen war auch Dionysius, einer aus dem Rat[3], und eine Frau mit Namen Damaris und andere mit ihnen.

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.33 So Paul departed from among them.34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

(Apg 20,4; Phil 4,16; 1Thess 1,1)2 And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, (Apg 8,35; Apg 13,5)3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.” (Lk 24,26; Lk 24,32; Joh 20,9; Apg 3,18)4 And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. (Joh 7,35; Apg 14,4; Apg 17,12; 1Thess 2,1)5 But the Jews[1] were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd.
