Jesus dient seinen Jüngern

1 Das Passahfest stand kurz bevor. Jesus wusste, dass nun die Zeit gekommen war, diese Welt zu verlassen und zum Vater zurückzukehren. Er hatte die Menschen geliebt, die zu ihm gehörten, und er hörte nicht auf, sie zu lieben^[1]. 2 An diesem Abend aß Jesus zusammen mit seinen Jüngern. Der Teufel hatte Judas, den Sohn von Simon Iskariot, schon zum Verrat an Jesus angestiftet. 3 Jesus aber wusste, dass der Vater ihm alles in die Hand gegeben hatte, dass er von Gott gekommen war und zu ihm zurückkehren würde. 4 Da stand er vom Tisch auf, legte sein Obergewand ab und band sich ein Tuch aus Leinen um. 5 Er goss Wasser in eine Schüssel und begann, seinen Jüngern die Füße zu waschen und mit dem Tuch abzutrocknen. 6 Als er zu Simon Petrus kam, wehrte dieser ab: »Herr, wie kommst du dazu, mir die Füße zu waschen!« 7 Jesus antwortete ihm: »Was ich hier tue, verstehst du jetzt noch nicht. Aber später wirst du es begreifen.« 8 Doch Petrus blieb dabei: »Niemals sollst du mir die Füße waschen!« Worauf Jesus erwiderte: »Wenn ich dir nicht die Füße wasche, gehörst du nicht zu mir.« 9 Da sagte Simon Petrus: »Herr, dann wasch mir nicht nur die Füße, sondern auch die Hände und das Gesicht!« 10 Jesus antwortete: »Wer gebadet hat, der ist ganz rein. Ihm braucht man nur noch den Straßenstaub von den Füßen zu waschen. Ihr seid rein – aber nicht alle.« 11 Jesus wusste nämlich, wer ihn verraten würde. Deshalb sagte er: »Ihr seid nicht alle rein.« 12 Nachdem Jesus ihnen die Füße gewaschen hatte, zog er sein Obergewand wieder an, kehrte zu seinem Platz am Tisch zurück und fragte seine Jünger: »Versteht ihr, was ich eben getan habe? 13 Ihr nennt mich Lehrer und Herr. Das ist auch richtig so, denn ich bin es. 14 Wenn schon ich, euer Lehrer und Herr, euch die Füße gewaschen habe, dann sollt auch ihr euch gegenseitig die Füße waschen. 15 Ich habe euch damit ein Beispiel gegeben, dem ihr folgen sollt. Handelt ebenso! 16 Ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Ein Diener steht niemals höher als sein Herr, und ein Botschafter untersteht dem, der ihn gesandt hat. 17 Jetzt wisst ihr das und könnt euch glücklich schätzen, wenn ihr auch danach handelt. 18 Ich spreche nicht von euch allen; denn ich weiß, welche ich als meine Jünger ausgewählt habe. Aber was in der Heiligen Schrift vorausgesagt ist, muss sich erfüllen: ›Einer, der mit mir zusammen das Brot isst, tritt mich mit Füßen.‹ (Ps 41,10) 19 Schon jetzt kündige ich es euch an, damit ihr auch dann, wenn es geschieht, daran glaubt: Ich bin der, den Gott gesandt hat^[2]. (Joh 8,24) 20 Ich sage euch die Wahrheit: Wer einen Menschen aufnimmt, den ich gesandt habe, der nimmt mich auf. Und wer mich aufnimmt, der nimmt den Vater auf, der mich gesandt hat.«

»Einer von euch wird mich verraten«

21 Nachdem Jesus dies gesagt hatte, bestätigte er tief erschüttert: »Ja, es ist wahr: Einer von euch wird mich verraten!« (Mt 26,21; Mk 14,18; Lk 22,21) 22 Die Jünger sahen sich fragend an und rätselten, wen er meinte. 23 Ganz nah bei Jesus hatte der Jünger seinen Platz, den Jesus sehr lieb hatte.^[3] 24 Simon Petrus gab ihm ein Zeichen; er sollte Jesus fragen, wen er gemeint hatte. 25 Da beugte der Jünger sich zu Jesus hinüber und fragte: »Herr, wer von uns ist es?« 26 Jesus antwortete ihm: »Es ist der, dem ich das Stück Brot geben werde, das ich jetzt in die Schüssel eintauche.« Darauf tauchte er das Brot ein und gab es Judas, dem Sohn von Simon Iskariot. 27 Sobald Judas das Brot genommen hatte, bekam Satan ihn ganz in seine Gewalt. »Beeil dich und erledige bald, was du tun willst!«, forderte Jesus ihn auf. 28 Keiner von den anderen am Tisch verstand, was Jesus mit diesen Worten meinte. 29 Manche dachten, Jesus hätte Judas hinausgeschickt, um alles Nötige für das Fest einzukaufen oder den Armen etwas zu geben. Denn Judas verwaltete das Geld von Jesus und seinen Jüngern. 30 Nachdem Judas das Brot genommen hatte, eilte er hinaus. Es war Nacht.

Das neue Gebot der Liebe

31 Als Judas fort war, sagte Jesus: »Jetzt zeigt Gott, wer der Menschensohn wirklich ist, und dadurch wird auch die Herrlichkeit Gottes sichtbar. 32 Wenn der Menschensohn erst Gottes Herrlichkeit gezeigt hat, dann wird auch Gott die Herrlichkeit des Menschensohnes sichtbar machen. Und das geschieht bald! 33 Denn bei euch, meine Kinder, werde ich nur noch kurze Zeit sein. Ihr werdet mich suchen. Doch was ich den führenden Juden gesagt habe,^[4] muss ich jetzt auch euch sagen: Wohin ich gehen werde, dahin könnt ihr mir nicht folgen. (Joh 7,34; Joh 8,21) 34 Ich gebe euch jetzt ein neues Gebot: Liebt einander! So wie ich euch geliebt habe, so sollt ihr euch auch untereinander lieben. 35 An eurer Liebe zueinander wird jeder erkennen, dass ihr meine Jünger seid.«

Jesus kündigt seine Verleugnung durch Petrus an

36 Da fragte ihn Simon Petrus: »Herr, wohin gehst du?« Jesus antwortete ihm: »Wo ich hingehe, kannst du jetzt nicht mitkommen. Aber du wirst mir später folgen.« (Mt 26,31; Mk 14,27; Lk 22,31) 37 »Lass mich doch jetzt bei dir bleiben«, bat ihn Petrus und beteuerte: »Ich bin sogar bereit, für dich zu sterben!« 38 Da antwortete Jesus: »Du willst für mich sterben? Ich versichere dir: Ehe der Hahn kräht, wirst du dreimal geleugnet haben, mich zu kennen!«

Jesus washes his disciples’ feet

1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world. It was time for him to go to the Father. Jesus loved his disciples who were in the world. So he now loved them to the very end. 2 They were having their evening meal. The devil had already tempted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. He had urged Judas to hand Jesus over to his enemies. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything under his power. He also knew he had come from God and was returning to God. 4 So he got up from the meal and took off his outer clothes. He wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a large bowl. Then he began to wash his disciples’ feet. He dried them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter. ‘Lord’, Peter said to him, ‘are you going to wash my feet?’ 7 Jesus replied, ‘You don’t realise now what I am doing. But later you will understand.’ 8 ‘No’, said Peter. ‘You will never wash my feet.’ Jesus answered, ‘Unless I wash you, you can’t share life with me.’ 9 ‘Lord’, Simon Peter replied, ‘not just my feet! Wash my hands and my head too!’ 10 Jesus answered, ‘People who have had a bath need to wash only their feet. The rest of their body is clean. And you are clean. But not all of you are.’ 11 Jesus knew who was going to hand him over to his enemies. That was why he said not every one was clean. 12 When Jesus finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes. Then he returned to his place. ‘Do you understand what I have done for you?’ he asked them. 13 ‘You call me “Teacher” and “Lord”. You are right. That is what I am. 14 I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet. So you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have given you an example. You should do as I have done for you. 16 What I’m about to tell you is true. A slave is not more important than his master. And a messenger is not more important than the one who sends him. 17 Now you know these things. So you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus tells what Judas will do

18 ‘I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this will happen so that this passage of Scripture will come true. It says, “The one who shared my bread has turned against me.” (Ps 41,9) 19 ‘I am telling you now, before it happens. When it does happen, you will believe that I am who I am. 20 What I’m about to tell you is true. Anyone who accepts someone I send accepts me. And anyone who accepts me accepts the one who sent me.’ 21 After he had said this, Jesus’ spirit was troubled. He said, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you is going to hand me over to my enemies.’ 22 His disciples stared at one another. They had no idea which one of them he meant. 23 The disciple Jesus loved was next to him at the table. 24 Simon Peter motioned to that disciple. He said, ‘Ask Jesus which one he means.’ 25 The disciple was leaning back against Jesus. He asked him, ‘Lord, who is it?’ 26 Jesus answered, ‘It is the one I will give this piece of bread to. I will give it to him after I have dipped it in the dish.’ He dipped the piece of bread. Then he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, ‘Do quickly what you are going to do.’ 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Judas was in charge of the money. So some of the disciples thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast. Others thought Jesus was talking about giving something to poor people. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

Peter will say he does not know Jesus

31 After Judas was gone, Jesus spoke. He said, ‘Now the Son of Man receives glory. And he brings glory to God. 32 If the Son brings glory to God, God himself will bring glory to the Son. God will do it at once. 33 ‘My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me. Just as I told the Jews, so I am telling you now. You can’t come where I am going. 34 ‘I give you a new command. Love one another. You must love one another, just as I have loved you. 35 If you love one another, everyone will know you are my disciples.’ 36 Simon Peter asked him, ‘Lord, where are you going?’ Jesus replied, ‘Where I am going you can’t follow now. But you will follow me later.’ 37 ‘Lord’, Peter asked, ‘why can’t I follow you now? I will give my life for you.’ 38 Then Jesus answered, ‘Will you really give your life for me? What I’m about to tell you is true. Before the cockerel crows, you will say three times that you don’t know me!
