Frauen für die Benjaminiter

1 Als die Israeliten in Mizpa versammelt gewesen waren, hatten sie geschworen: »Keiner von uns wird jemals seine Tochter einem Benjaminiter zur Frau geben!« 2 Nun gingen sie zu Gottes Heiligtum nach Bethel und blieben bis zum Abend dort. Sie weinten laut und beteten: 3 »HERR, du Gott Israels, unser Volk hat einen ganzen Stamm verloren! Warum musste das geschehen?« 4 Am nächsten Morgen standen sie früh auf, errichteten einen Altar und brachten darauf Brand- und Friedensopfer dar. 5 Sie fragten einander: »Gibt es Leute aus unserem Volk, die nicht zu unserer Versammlung nach Mizpa gekommen sind?« Damals hatten sie nämlich geschworen: »Wer nicht erschienen ist, muss sterben!« 6 Es tat den Israeliten leid um die Benjaminiter. »Ein ganzer Stamm ist ausgelöscht«, klagten sie, 7 »wie können wir nur den wenigen Überlebenden zu Frauen verhelfen? Wir haben ja vor dem HERRN geschworen, ihnen keine von unseren Töchtern zu geben. 8 Vielleicht ist ja wirklich irgendeine Sippe nicht zu unserer Versammlung in Mizpa gekommen. Wir wollen es nachprüfen!« Sie stellten fest, dass die Einwohner der Stadt Jabesch im Gebiet von Gilead nicht dabei gewesen waren, 9 denn als sie ihre Truppen musterten, fehlten die Männer aus Jabesch. 10 Da wählten sie 12.000 Soldaten aus und befahlen ihnen: »Geht nach Jabesch in Gilead und tötet alle Einwohner, auch die Frauen und Kinder. 11 Vollstreckt an ihnen Gottes Strafe! Nur die unverheirateten Mädchen lasst leben.« 12 Die Soldaten fanden unter den Einwohnern von Jabesch 400 Mädchen, die noch nicht verheiratet waren, und brachten sie in das israelitische Lager bei Silo im Land Kanaan. 13 Von dort schickten die Israeliten Boten zu den Benjaminitern am Rimmonfelsen und schlossen Frieden mit ihnen. 14 Da kehrten die 600 Männer aus der Wüste zurück und bekamen die Mädchen aus Jabesch, die man am Leben gelassen hatte. Aber es waren nicht genug für sie alle. 15 Die Israeliten waren traurig, dass der HERR einen ihrer Stämme fast ausgelöscht hatte. Sie hatten großes Mitleid mit den Benjaminitern. 16 Wieder fragten die Führer des Volkes: »Woher bekommen wir Frauen für die übrigen Männer von Benjamin? Sie haben ja alle Frauen ihres Stammes verloren! 17 Wir müssen dafür sorgen, dass sie Nachkommen haben, an die sie ihren Besitz weitervererben können. Schließlich soll nicht ein ganzer Stamm aus Israel aussterben! 18 Aber wir dürfen ihnen keine von unseren Töchtern zur Frau geben, denn wir haben geschworen: ›Wer seine Tochter mit einem Mann aus Benjamin verheiratet, den soll Gottes Strafe treffen.‹« 19 Schließlich schlugen sie vor: »Bald findet doch das jährliche Fest für den HERRN hier in Silo statt. Dieser Ort liegt sehr günstig: nördlich von Bethel, südlich von Lebona und östlich der Straße, die von Bethel nach Sichem führt. 20 Ihr Benjaminiter, legt euch in den Weinbergen auf die Lauer! 21 Wenn die Mädchen aus Silo herauskommen, um zu tanzen, springt ihr hervor, und jeder von euch packt eine von ihnen. Dann nehmt sie mit in euer Stammesgebiet. 22 Wenn ihre Väter und Brüder zu uns kommen und uns Vorwürfe machen, werden wir antworten: ›Habt doch Mitleid und lasst ihnen die Mädchen! Sie haben beim Krieg gegen Jabesch nicht genug Frauen bekommen. Ihr macht euch nicht schuldig, denn ihr habt sie ihnen ja nicht freiwillig gegeben.‹« 23 Die Benjaminiter befolgten den Rat und raubten so viele Frauen, wie ihnen fehlten. Sie nahmen sie mit in ihr Stammesgebiet, bauten dort die zerstörten Städte wieder auf und wohnten darin. 24 Auch die anderen Israeliten machten sich auf den Heimweg und kehrten in die Gebiete zurück, aus denen sie stammten. 25 In jener Zeit gab es keinen König in Israel, und jeder tat, was er für richtig hielt.

Wives Provided for the Tribe of Benjamin

1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, “No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin.” (Ri 20,1; Ri 21,18) 2 And the people came to Bethel and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly. (Ri 20,18; Ri 20,26; Ri 20,31) 3 And they said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that today there should be one tribe lacking in Israel?” 4 And the next day the people rose early and built there an altar and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. (2Sam 24,25) 5 And the people of Israel said, “Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the Lord?” For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.” (Ri 5,23) 6 And the people of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brother and said, “One tribe is cut off from Israel this day. (Ri 21,15) 7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?” (Ri 21,16) 8 And they said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah?” And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly. (1Sam 11,1; 1Sam 31,11) 9 For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there. (Ri 21,8) 10 So the congregation sent 12,000 of their bravest men there and commanded them, “Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones. (Ri 21,5) 11 This is what you shall do: every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall devote to destruction.” (4Mo 31,17) 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. (Jos 18,1) 13 Then the whole congregation sent word to the people of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon and proclaimed peace to them. (5Mo 20,10; Ri 20,47) 14 And Benjamin returned at that time. And they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead, but they were not enough for them. 15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel. (Ri 21,6) 16 Then the elders of the congregation said, “What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?” (Ri 21,7) 17 And they said, “There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel. 18 Yet we cannot give them wives from our daughters.” For the people of Israel had sworn, “Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.” (Ri 21,1) 19 So they said, “Behold, there is the yearly feast of the Lord at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.” (Ri 20,31) 20 And they commanded the people of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in ambush in the vineyards 21 and watch. If the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and snatch each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. (2Mo 15,20; Ri 11,34) 22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.’” 23 And the people of Benjamin did so and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off. Then they went and returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and lived in them. (Ri 20,48) 24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance. 25 In those days there was no king in Israel.
