Das Volk Israel in Ägypten

1 Dies sind die Namen der Israeliten, die mit ihrem Vater Jakob und ihren Familien nach Ägypten gekommen waren: 2 Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Juda, 3 Issachar, Sebulon, Benjamin, 4 Dan, Naftali, Gad und Asser. 5 Insgesamt waren es siebzig Personen, und alle stammten von Jakob ab. Josef, auch ein Sohn Jakobs, hatte bereits vorher in Ägypten gelebt. 6 Nach und nach waren Josef und seine Brüder gestorben, und schließlich lebte von ihrer Generation niemand mehr. 7 Ihre Nachkommen aber vermehrten sich und wuchsen zu einem großen Volk heran. Bald waren es so viele geworden, dass sie das ganze Land bevölkerten. 8 Da trat ein neuer König die Herrschaft an, der von Josef nichts mehr wusste. 9 Er sagte zu den Ägyptern: »Ihr seht, dass die Israeliten schon fast zahlreicher und mächtiger sind als wir. 10 Wir müssen uns etwas einfallen lassen, damit dieses Volk nicht noch weiter wächst! Denn sonst laufen sie womöglich zu unseren Feinden über, wenn ein Krieg ausbrechen sollte. Dann könnten sie gegen uns kämpfen und das Land in ihre Gewalt bringen^[1].« 11 So zwang man die Israeliten zur Sklavenarbeit und setzte Aufseher über sie ein. Sie mussten für den Pharao die Vorratsstädte Pitom und Ramses bauen. 12 Doch je mehr die Israeliten unterdrückt wurden, desto zahlreicher wurden sie. Sie breiteten sich im ganzen Land aus, so dass es den Ägyptern langsam unheimlich wurde. 13 Darum zwangen sie die Israeliten erbarmungslos zu harter Arbeit 14 und machten ihnen das Leben schwer: Sie mussten aus Lehm Ziegel herstellen und auf den Feldern arbeiten. 15 Den israelitischen Hebammen Schifra und Pua befahl der ägyptische König: 16 »Wenn ihr von den hebräischen Frauen zur Geburt gerufen werdet und seht, dass ein Junge zur Welt kommt, dann tötet ihn sofort! Ist es ein Mädchen, könnt ihr es am Leben lassen!« 17 Aber aus Ehrfurcht vor Gott hielten sich die Hebammen nicht an den königlichen Befehl, sondern ließen die Jungen am Leben. 18 Als der König sie deswegen zur Rede stellte, 19 erklärten sie: »Die hebräischen Frauen sind viel kräftiger als die Ägypterinnen. Ehe wir zu ihnen kommen, haben sie ihr Kind schon geboren!« 20-21 Weil die Hebammen Ehrfurcht vor Gott hatten, tat er ihnen Gutes und schenkte ihnen eigene Familien und Kinder. Das Volk Israel wurde immer größer und mächtiger. 22 Schließlich befahl der Pharao den Ägyptern: »Werft alle neugeborenen Jungen der Hebräer in den Nil, nur die Mädchen lasst am Leben!«

Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. (Apg 7,18) 9 And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. 13 So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves (2Mo 5,7) 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. 15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 “When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?” 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” 20 So God dealt well with the midwives.
