JONAS BERUFUNG

1 Das Wort des HERRN erging an Jona, den Sohn Amittais: (1Kön 17,9; 2Kön 14,25; Jon 3,1) 2 Mach dich auf den Weg und geh nach Ninive, der großen Stadt, und rufe über sie aus, dass ihre Schlechtigkeit zu mir heraufgedrungen ist. (1Mo 6,5)

JONAS FLUCHT

3 Jona machte sich auf den Weg; doch er wollte nach Tarschisch fliehen, weit weg vom HERRN. Er ging also nach Jafo hinab und fand dort ein Schiff, das nach Tarschisch fuhr. Er bezahlte das Fahrgeld und ging an Bord, um nach Tarschisch mitzufahren, weit weg vom HERRN. (Ps 139,7; Jes 23,1; Hes 27,25) 4 Der HERR aber warf einen großen Wind auf das Meer und es entstand ein gewaltiger Seesturm und das Schiff drohte auseinanderzubrechen. 5 Da gerieten die Seeleute in Furcht und jeder schrie zu seinem Gott um Hilfe. Sie warfen sogar die Ladung ins Meer, damit das Schiff leichter wurde. Jona war in den untersten Raum des Schiffes hinabgestiegen, hatte sich hingelegt und schlief fest. (Mt 8,24; Apg 27,18) 6 Der Kapitän ging zu ihm und sagte: Wie kannst du schlafen? Steh auf, ruf deinen Gott an; vielleicht denkt dieser Gott an uns, sodass wir nicht untergehen. 7 Dann sagten sie zueinander: Kommt, wir wollen das Los werfen, um zu erfahren, wer an diesem unserem Unheil schuld ist. Sie warfen das Los und es fiel auf Jona. (1Sam 14,40) 8 Da fragten sie ihn: Sag uns doch, weshalb dieses Unheil über uns gekommen ist. Was treibst du für ein Gewerbe und woher kommst du, was ist dein Land und aus welchem Volk bist du? 9 Er antwortete ihnen: Ich bin ein Hebräer und verehre den HERRN, den Gott des Himmels, der das Meer und das Festland gemacht hat. (Esr 5,11; Jes 37,16) 10 Da gerieten die Männer in große Furcht und sagten zu ihm: Was hast du da getan? Denn die Männer erkannten, dass er vor dem HERRN auf der Flucht war, wie er es ihnen mitgeteilt hatte. (1Mo 3,13) 11 Und sie sagten zu ihm: Was sollen wir mit dir machen, damit das Meer sich beruhigt und uns verschont? Denn das Meer wurde immer stürmischer. 12 Jona antwortete ihnen: Nehmt mich und werft mich ins Meer, damit das Meer sich beruhigt und euch verschont! Denn ich weiß, dass dieser gewaltige Sturm durch meine Schuld über euch gekommen ist. 13 Die Männer aber ruderten mit aller Kraft, um wieder an Land zu kommen; doch sie richteten nichts aus, denn das Meer stürmte immer heftiger gegen sie an. 14 Da riefen sie zum HERRN: Ach HERR, lass uns nicht untergehen wegen dieses Mannes und rechne uns, was wir jetzt tun, nicht als Vergehen an unschuldigem Blut an! Fürwahr, wie du wolltest, HERR, so hast du gehandelt. (5Mo 21,8; Jer 26,15) 15 Dann nahmen sie Jona und warfen ihn ins Meer und das Meer hörte auf zu toben. 16 Da gerieten die Männer in große Furcht vor dem HERRN und sie schlachteten für den HERRN ein Opfer und machten ihm Gelübde. Jonah Flees the Presence of the Lord

3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. (1Mo 4,16; Jos 19,46; 1Kön 10,22; Ps 139,9; Jon 4,2)

4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. (1Kön 22,48; Ps 48,7; Ps 107,25) 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. (Ps 107,28; Apg 27,18; Apg 27,38) 6 So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.” (Jon 1,5; Jon 3,9)

Jonah Is Thrown into the Sea

7 And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. (Ri 20,9) 8 Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” 9 And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” (Ps 146,6; Offb 11,13) 10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. (Jon 1,3) 11 Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. 12 He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” (Jos 7,20) 13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard^[2] to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. 14 Therefore they called out to the Lord, “O Lord, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.” (5Mo 21,8; Ps 115,3) 15 So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. (Ps 65,7; Lk 8,24) 16 Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. (1Mo 8,20; 1Mo 31,54; Jon 2,9)

A Great Fish Swallows Jonah

17 ^[3] And the Lord appointed^[4] a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. (Mt 12,40; Mt 16,4; Lk 11,30)
