1Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. (Mt 4:25; Mt 17:24; Mr 10:1; Lu 9:51; Lu 17:11; Joh 10:40)2And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. (Mt 12:15)3And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one’s wife for any cause?” (Mt 5:31; Joh 8:6)4He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, (Ge 1:27; Ge 2:18; Ge 2:21; Ge 5:2; Mt 21:16)5and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? (Ge 2:24; Mal 2:15; 1Co 6:16; Eph 5:31)6So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” (1Co 7:10)7They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” (De 24:1)8He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. (Mr 3:5; Mr 6:52; Mr 16:14; Heb 3:8)9And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”[1] (Mt 5:32)10The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”11But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. (Mt 13:11; Mt 20:23; 1Co 7:2; 1Co 7:7; 1Co 7:17)12For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.” (1Co 7:32)
Let the Children Come to Me
13Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, (Mr 10:13; Mr 10:48; Lu 18:15)14but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt 18:3; Mr 9:39)15And he laid his hands on them and went away.
The Rich Young Man
16And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” (Mt 18:8; Mt 19:29; Mt 25:46; Mr 10:17; Lu 10:25; Lu 18:18)17And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” (Le 18:5; Ne 9:29; Eze 20:11; Eze 20:13; Eze 20:21; Ro 10:5; Ga 3:12)18He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, (Ex 20:12; De 5:16; Mt 5:21; Mt 5:27; Ro 13:9)19Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Le 19:18; Mt 5:43; Mt 22:39; Mr 12:31; Lu 10:27; Ga 5:14; Jas 2:8)20The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” (Php 3:6)21Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” (Mt 5:48; Mt 6:19; Lu 12:33; Lu 16:9; Lu 19:8; Ac 2:45; Ac 4:34; 1Ti 6:18)22When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. (Eze 33:31)23And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. (Mt 13:22; 1Co 1:26)24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” (Mt 12:28; Mr 10:24)25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”26But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Ge 18:14; Job 42:2; Jer 32:17; Jer 32:27; Zec 8:6; Mr 10:21; Mr 14:36; Lu 1:37; Lu 22:61)27Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” (Mt 4:20; Mt 4:22; Mr 1:18; Mr 1:20)28Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world,[2] when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Mt 16:27; Lu 22:30; 1Co 6:2; Re 3:21)29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold[3] and will inherit eternal life. (Mt 19:16; Mt 25:34; Lu 14:26)30But many who are first will be last, and the last first. (Mt 20:16; Mt 21:31; Mr 10:31; Lu 13:30)
Matthew 19
New International Version
Divorce
1When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan.2Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.3Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?’4‘Haven’t you read,’ he replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator “made them male and female,” (Ge 1:27)5and said, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh”? (Ge 2:24)6So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no-one separate.’7‘Why then,’ they asked, ‘did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?’8Jesus replied, ‘Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.9I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.’10The disciples said to him, ‘If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.’11Jesus replied, ‘Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.12For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others – and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.’
The little children and Jesus
13Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.14Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’15When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
The rich and the kingdom of God
16Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, ‘Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?’17‘Why do you ask me about what is good?’ Jesus replied. ‘There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.’18‘Which ones?’ he enquired. Jesus replied, ‘ “You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony,19honour your father and mother,”[1] and “love your neighbour as yourself.” ’ (Ex 20:12; Le 19:18; De 5:16)20‘All these I have kept,’ the young man said. ‘What do I still lack?’21Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’22When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.23Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, ‘Who then can be saved?’26Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’27Peter answered him, ‘We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?’28Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[2] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.30But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
