1Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying, “I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider[1] he has thrown into the sea. (Ex 15:21; Jud 5:1; 2Sa 22:1; Ps 106:12)2The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. (Ex 3:6; Ex 3:15; De 10:21; 2Sa 22:47; Ps 18:1; Ps 18:46; Ps 34:3; Ps 59:17; Ps 99:5; Ps 99:9; Ps 109:1; Ps 118:14; Ps 118:28; Ps 140:7; Ps 145:1; Isa 12:2; Isa 25:1; Hab 3:18)3The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is his name. (Ex 3:15; Ex 6:3; Ps 24:8; Ps 83:18; Isa 42:8; Mal 3:6; Re 19:11)4“Pharaoh’s chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea. (Ex 14:7; Ex 14:28)5The floods covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone. (Ex 14:28; Ex 15:10; Ne 9:11)6Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. (Ex 15:12; Ps 2:9; Ps 118:15; Isa 51:9; Re 2:27)7In the greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries; you send out your fury; it consumes them like stubble. (De 33:26; Isa 5:24; Isa 47:14; Mal 4:1)8At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up; the floods stood up in a heap; the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea. (Ex 14:21; Jos 3:16; 2Sa 22:16; Job 4:9; Ps 18:15; Ps 78:13; Hab 3:10; 2Th 2:8)9The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them. I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’ (Ge 49:27; Ex 14:9; Jud 5:30; Isa 53:12; Lu 11:22)10You blew with your wind; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters. (Ex 14:21; Ex 14:28; Ex 15:5; Isa 11:15; Isa 40:24)11“Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? (De 3:24; 1Sa 2:2; 2Sa 7:22; 1Ki 8:23; 2Ch 6:14; Ps 77:14; Isa 6:3; Jer 10:6; Re 4:8)12You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them. (Ex 15:6)13“You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. (Ps 77:15; Ps 77:20; Ps 78:54)14The peoples have heard; they tremble; pangs have seized the inhabitants of Philistia. (Nu 14:14; De 2:25; Jos 2:9; Jos 9:24)15Now are the chiefs of Edom dismayed; trembling seizes the leaders of Moab; all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away. (Nu 22:3; De 2:4; Jos 2:9; Jos 2:11; Jos 2:24; Jos 5:1)16Terror and dread fall upon them; because of the greatness of your arm, they are still as a stone, till your people, O Lord, pass by, till the people pass by whom you have purchased. (De 2:25; De 11:25; 1Sa 25:37; Ps 74:2; 1Pe 2:9)17You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain, the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode, the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established. (Ps 44:2; Ps 78:54; Ps 80:8; Ps 132:13; Jer 32:41)18The Lord will reign forever and ever.” (Ps 10:16; Ps 29:10; Ps 45:6; Ps 146:10; Re 11:15)19For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. (Ex 14:23; Ex 14:28)20Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. (Ex 2:4; Nu 26:59; Jud 4:4; Jud 11:34; 1Sa 18:6; 2Ki 22:14; Ne 6:14; Ps 68:25; Ps 149:3; Ps 150:4; Mic 6:4; Lu 2:36)21And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.” (Ex 15:1)
Bitter Water Made Sweet
22Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. (Ge 16:7; Ge 25:18; 1Sa 15:7)23When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah.[2] (Ru 1:20)24And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” (Ex 16:2; Ex 17:3)25And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log,[3] and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord[4] made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them, (Ex 14:10; Ex 16:4; Ex 17:4; De 8:2; De 8:16; Jud 2:22; Jud 3:1; Jud 3:4; 2Ki 2:21; 2Ki 4:41; Ps 66:10)26saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.” (Ex 23:25; Le 26:3; De 7:12; De 28:27; De 28:60; Ps 103:3; Ps 147:3; Ho 6:1)27Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there by the water. (Nu 33:9)
Exodus 15
New International Version
The song of Moses and Miriam
1Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord: ‘I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.2‘The Lord is my strength and my defence[1]; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.3The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name.4Pharaoh’s chariots and his army he has hurled into the sea. The best of Pharaoh’s officers are drowned in the Red Sea.[2]5The deep waters have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone.6Your right hand, Lord, was majestic in power. Your right hand, Lord, shattered the enemy.7‘In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble.8By the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up. The surging waters stood up like a wall; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.9The enemy boasted, “I will pursue, I will overtake them. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword and my hand will destroy them.”10But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters.11Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you – majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?12‘You stretch out your right hand, and the earth swallows your enemies.13In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling.14The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will grip the people of Philistia.15The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, the people[3] of Canaan will melt away;16terror and dread will fall on them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone – until your people pass by, Lord, until the people you bought[4] pass by.17You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance – the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling, the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.18‘The Lord reigns for ever and ever.’19When Pharaoh’s horses, chariots and horsemen[5] went into the sea, the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground.20Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing.21Miriam sang to them: ‘Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.’
The waters of Marah and Elim
22Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they travelled in the desert without finding water.23When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.[6])24So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, ‘What are we to drink?’25Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test.26He said, ‘If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.’27Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there near the water.
