2 Samuel 20

English Standard Version

1 Now there happened to be there a worthless man, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. And he blew the trumpet and said, “We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to his tents, O Israel!” (De 13:13; 2Sa 19:43; 2Sa 20:22; 1Ki 12:16; 2Ch 10:16)2 So all the men of Israel withdrew from David and followed Sheba the son of Bichri. But the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.3 And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house and put them in a house under guard and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood. (2Sa 15:16; 2Sa 16:21)4 Then the king said to Amasa, “Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself.” (2Sa 17:25; 2Sa 19:13)5 So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he delayed beyond the set time that had been appointed him.6 And David said to Abishai, “Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom. Take your lord’s servants and pursue him, lest he get himself to fortified cities and escape from us.”[1] (2Sa 11:11; 1Ki 1:33)7 And there went out after him Joab’s men and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. They went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri. (2Sa 8:18; 2Sa 20:23)8 When they were at the great stone that is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier’s garment, and over it was a belt with a sword in its sheath fastened on his thigh, and as he went forward it fell out.9 And Joab said to Amasa, “Is it well with you, my brother?” And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. (Mt 26:49; Mr 14:45; Lu 22:47)10 But Amasa did not observe the sword that was in Joab’s hand. So Joab struck him with it in the stomach and spilled his entrails to the ground without striking a second blow, and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri. (2Sa 2:23; 1Ki 2:5)11 And one of Joab’s young men took his stand by Amasa and said, “Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab.”12 And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And anyone who came by, seeing him, stopped. And when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field and threw a garment over him.13 When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.14 And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah,[2] and all the Bichrites[3] assembled and followed him in. (Nu 21:16; 2Ki 15:29)15 And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah. They cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart, and they were battering the wall to throw it down. (2Sa 20:14; 2Ki 19:32; Isa 37:33; Jer 6:6; Eze 4:2; Eze 26:8)16 Then a wise woman called from the city, “Listen! Listen! Tell Joab, ‘Come here, that I may speak to you.’”17 And he came near her, and the woman said, “Are you Joab?” He answered, “I am.” Then she said to him, “Listen to the words of your servant.” And he answered, “I am listening.”18 Then she said, “They used to say in former times, ‘Let them but ask counsel at Abel,’ and so they settled a matter. (2Sa 20:14)19 I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why will you swallow up the heritage of the Lord?” (1Sa 26:19; 2Sa 17:16)20 Joab answered, “Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy! (2Sa 20:19)21 That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David. Give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city.” And the woman said to Joab, “Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall.” (Jos 24:33)22 Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king. (1Sa 4:10; 2Sa 20:16; Ec 9:14)23 Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites; (2Sa 8:16; 1Ki 4:3)24 and Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder; (1Ki 12:18)25 and Sheva was secretary; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests; (2Sa 15:24; 2Sa 19:11)26 and Ira the Jairite was also David’s priest. (2Sa 23:38)

2 Samuel 20

New International Version

1 Now a troublemaker named Sheba son of Bikri, a Benjaminite, happened to be there. He sounded the trumpet and shouted, ‘We have no share in David, no part in Jesse’s son! Every man to his tent, Israel!’2 So all the men of Israel deserted David to follow Sheba son of Bikri. But the men of Judah stayed by their king all the way from the Jordan to Jerusalem.3 When David returned to his palace in Jerusalem, he took the ten concubines he had left to take care of the palace and put them in a house under guard. He provided for them but had no sexual relations with them. They were kept in confinement till the day of their death, living as widows.4 Then the king said to Amasa, ‘Summon the men of Judah to come to me within three days, and be here yourself.’5 But when Amasa went to summon Judah, he took longer than the time the king had set for him.6 David said to Abishai, ‘Now Sheba son of Bikri will do us more harm than Absalom did. Take your master’s men and pursue him, or he will find fortified cities and escape from us.’[1]7 So Joab’s men and the Kerethites and Pelethites and all the mighty warriors went out under the command of Abishai. They marched out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba son of Bikri.8 While they were at the great rock in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Joab was wearing his military tunic, and strapped over it at his waist was a belt with a dagger in its sheath. As he stepped forward, it dropped out of its sheath.9 Joab said to Amasa, ‘How are you, my brother?’ Then Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.10 Amasa was not on his guard against the dagger in Joab’s hand, and Joab plunged it into his belly, and his intestines spilled out on the ground. Without being stabbed again, Amasa died. Then Joab and his brother Abishai pursued Sheba son of Bikri.11 One of Joab’s men stood beside Amasa and said, ‘Whoever favours Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab!’12 Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the middle of the road, and the man saw that all the troops came to a halt there. When he realised that everyone who came up to Amasa stopped, he dragged him from the road into a field and threw a garment over him.13 After Amasa had been removed from the road, everyone went on with Joab to pursue Sheba son of Bikri.14 Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel Beth Maakah and through the entire region of the Bikrites,[2] who gathered together and followed him.15 All the troops with Joab came and besieged Sheba in Abel Beth Maakah. They built a siege ramp up to the city, and it stood against the outer fortifications. While they were battering the wall to bring it down,16 a wise woman called from the city, ‘Listen! Listen! Tell Joab to come here so that I can speak to him.’17 He went towards her, and she asked, ‘Are you Joab?’ ‘I am,’ he answered. She said, ‘Listen to what your servant has to say.’ ‘I’m listening,’ he said.18 She continued, ‘Long ago they used to say, “Get your answer at Abel,” and that settled it.19 We are the peaceful and faithful in Israel. You are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why do you want to swallow up the Lord’s inheritance?’20 ‘Far be it from me!’ Joab replied, ‘Far be it from me to swallow up or destroy!21 That is not the case. A man named Sheba son of Bikri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the king, against David. Hand over this one man, and I’ll withdraw from the city.’ The woman said to Joab, ‘His head will be thrown to you from the wall.’22 Then the woman went to all the people with her wise advice, and they cut off the head of Sheba son of Bikri and threw it to Joab. So he sounded the trumpet, and his men dispersed from the city, each returning to his home. And Joab went back to the king in Jerusalem.23 Joab was over Israel’s entire army; Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites;24 Adoniram[3] was in charge of forced labour; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder; (1Ki 4:6)25 Sheva was secretary; Zadok and Abiathar were priests;26 and Ira the Jairite[4] was David’s priest.
