Conquests in Northern Canaan

1 When Jabin, king of Hazor, heard of this, he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, (Jos 10:3) 2 and to the kings who were in the northern hill country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in Naphoth-dor on the west, (Nu 34:11; De 1:1; Jos 3:16; Jos 12:3; Jos 12:23; Jos 13:27; Jos 17:11; Jos 19:35; Jud 1:27)

5 And all these kings joined their forces and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel. 6 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give over all of them, slain, to Israel. 7 So Joshua and all his warriors came suddenly against them by the waters of Merom and fell upon them. (Jos 10:9) 8 And the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them and chased them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh. And they struck them until he left none remaining. (De 20:16) 13 But none of the cities that stood on mounds did Israel burn, except Hazor alone; that Joshua burned. 14 And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the people of Israel took for their plunder. But every person they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they did not leave any who breathed. 15 Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses. 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. (Jos 14:7; Jos 14:10) 19 There was not a city that made peace with the people of Israel except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took them all in battle. (Jos 9:3; Jos 9:7) 20 For it was the Lord’s doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the Lord commanded Moses. (Ex 4:21; De 20:16) 21 And Joshua came at that time and cut off the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction with their cities. (Nu 13:22; De 1:28; Jos 15:13) 22 There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain. (1Sa 17:4) 23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses. Sie schlugen ihre Feinde in die Flucht und verfolgten sie bis zur großen Stadt Sidon, bis nach Misrefot-Majim und nach Osten bis in die Talebene von Mizpe. Sie töteten alle und ließen keinen entkommen. 9 Josua lähmte die erbeuteten Pferde und verbrannte die Streitwagen, wie der HERR es ihm befohlen hatte. 10 Nach diesem Sieg kehrte Josua um und eroberte die Stadt Hazor, die damals die bedeutendste Stadt im Gebiet der verbündeten Königreiche war. Er tötete ihren König mit dem Schwert, 11 und die Israeliten vollstreckten den Bann an allen Einwohnern. Niemand kam mit dem Leben davon. Anschließend steckte Josua die Stadt in Brand. 12 Auch die anderen Städte, die sich gegen Israel verbündet hatten, eroberte Josua und tötete ihre Könige. Josua hielt sich genau an alle Weisungen, die Mose vom HERRN bekommen hatte.

16 So nahm Josua ganz Kanaan ein: das Bergland, die gesamte Wüste Negev und die ganze Landschaft Goschen, das Hügelland, die Jordanebene sowie das nördliche Bergland^[1] und sein Hügelland. 17 Das eroberte Gebiet erstreckte sich vom kahlen Gebirge bei Seïr im Süden bis nach Baal-Gad in der Ebene des Libanon am Fuß des Hermon im Norden. Alle Könige, die dort regierten, nahm er gefangen und tötete sie. 18 Er musste jedoch lange gegen sie kämpfen. 19 Außer der Hiwiterstadt Gibeon ergab sich keine Stadt den Israeliten freiwillig. Sie mussten alle erobert werden. 20 Denn der HERR hatte sie starrsinig gemacht^[2] und dazu gebracht, gegen Israel zu kämpfen. Er wollte, dass die Israeliten an ihnen den Bann vollstreckten und sie ohne Erbarmen vernichteten. So hatte er es Mose befohlen. 21 Damals rottete Josua auch die Anakiter aus, die in Hebron, Debir und Anab und in anderen Städten im Bergland von Juda und Israel lebten. Er vollstreckte den Bann an ihnen 22 und ließ keinen einzigen übrig. Nur in Gaza, Gat und Aschdod hielt sich ein Rest. 23 Josua nahm das ganze Land Kanaan ein, wie der HERR es Mose versprochen hatte. Er gab es den Israeliten als Erbbesitz und teilte den Stämmen und Sippen ihre Gebiete zu. Das Land hatte endlich Ruhe vom Krieg.
