1In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, (Lu 1:3; Lu 24:19)2until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. (Mt 28:19; Mr 16:15; Mr 16:19; Lu 4:1; Lu 4:18; Lu 24:47; Joh 20:21; Joh 20:22; Ac 10:38; Ac 10:42)3He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. (Mt 28:17; Mr 16:14; Lu 24:34; Lu 24:36; Joh 20:19; Joh 20:21; Ac 10:40; Ac 13:31; 1Co 15:5)4And while staying[1] with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; (Lu 24:49)5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with[2] the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Mt 3:11; Ac 2:1; Ac 11:16)
12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. (Lu 24:50; Lu 24:52)13And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. (Mt 10:2; Mr 3:16; Lu 6:14; Ac 9:37; Ac 9:39; Ac 20:8; Ac 21:20)14All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.[3] (Mt 12:46; Lu 8:2; Ac 2:42; Ac 2:46; Ac 4:24; Ac 5:12; Ac 6:4; Ac 15:25; Ro 12:12; Ro 15:6; Eph 6:18; Col 4:2)15In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, (Joh 21:23)16“Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. (Mt 26:47; Mr 14:43; Lu 22:37; Lu 22:47; Lu 24:44; Joh 18:3)17For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” (Joh 6:71; Joh 13:21; Ac 1:25; Ac 20:24; Ac 21:19; Ro 11:13; 2Co 4:1)18(Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong[4] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. (Mt 26:14; Mt 27:5)19And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) (Ac 21:40)20“For it is written in the Book of Psalms, “‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’; and “‘Let another take his office.’ (Ps 69:25; Ps 109:8)21So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, (Nu 27:17; De 31:2; 1Sa 18:13; Joh 15:27)22beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” (Mr 1:1; Lu 24:48; Ac 1:2; Ac 1:8; Ac 1:9; Ac 4:33; Ac 13:24; 1Pe 1:3)23And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. (Ac 1:26; Ac 15:22; Ac 18:7; Col 4:11)24And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen (1Sa 16:7; Ac 6:6; Ac 13:3; Ro 8:27)25to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” (Ac 1:17; Ro 1:5; 1Co 9:2; Ga 2:8)26And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
