1In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the people of Dan was seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell in, for until then no inheritance among the tribes of Israel had fallen to them. (Jos 19:47; Jud 1:34; Jud 17:6; Jud 21:25)2So the people of Dan sent five able men from the whole number of their tribe, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land and to explore it. And they said to them, “Go and explore the land.” And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there. (Nu 13:17; Jos 2:1; Jos 24:33; Jud 13:25; Jud 17:1; Jud 17:8; Jud 18:8; Jud 18:11)3When they were by the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite. And they turned aside and said to him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is your business here?”4And he said to them, “This is how Micah dealt with me: he has hired me, and I have become his priest.” (Jud 17:10)5And they said to him, “Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether the journey on which we are setting out will succeed.” (Nu 27:21)6And the priest said to them, “Go in peace. The journey on which you go is under the eye of the Lord.” (1Sa 1:17; 1Ki 22:6)7Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were there, how they lived in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, lacking[1] nothing that is in the earth and possessing wealth, and how they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone. (Jos 19:47; Jud 18:10; Jud 18:27; Jud 18:28)8And when they came to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers said to them, “What do you report?” (Jud 18:2; Jud 18:11)9They said, “Arise, and let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. And will you do nothing? Do not be slow to go, to enter in and possess the land. (Nu 13:20; Jos 2:23; Jos 18:3; 1Ki 22:3)10As soon as you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people. The land is spacious, for God has given it into your hands, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth.” (De 8:9; Jud 18:7; Jud 18:27; Jud 19:19)11So 600 men of the tribe of Dan, armed with weapons of war, set out from Zorah and Eshtaol, (Jud 18:16)12and went up and encamped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. On this account that place is called Mahaneh-dan[2] to this day; behold, it is west of Kiriath-jearim. (Jos 15:60; Jud 13:25)13And they passed on from there to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah. (Jud 18:2)14Then the five men who had gone to scout out the country of Laish said to their brothers, “Do you know that in these houses there are an ephod, household gods, a carved image, and a metal image? Now therefore consider what you will do.” (Jud 17:4)15And they turned aside there and came to the house of the young Levite, at the home of Micah, and asked him about his welfare. (Ge 43:27)16Now the 600 men of the Danites, armed with their weapons of war, stood by the entrance of the gate. (Jud 18:11)17And the five men who had gone to scout out the land went up and entered and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the metal image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the 600 men armed with weapons of war. (Jud 17:4; Jud 18:2; Jud 18:14)18And when these went into Micah’s house and took the carved image, the ephod, the household gods, and the metal image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?” (Jud 18:17)19And they said to him, “Keep quiet; put your hand on your mouth and come with us and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and clan in Israel?” (Jud 17:10; Job 21:5; Job 29:9; Job 40:4; Pr 30:32; Mic 7:16)20And the priest’s heart was glad. He took the ephod and the household gods and the carved image and went along with the people.21So they turned and departed, putting the little ones and the livestock and the goods in front of them. (1Sa 17:22; Isa 10:28)22When they had gone a distance from the home of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah’s house were called out, and they overtook the people of Dan.23And they shouted to the people of Dan, who turned around and said to Micah, “What is the matter with you, that you come with such a company?”24And he said, “You take my gods that I made and the priest, and go away, and what have I left? How then do you ask me, ‘What is the matter with you?’” (Ge 31:30)25And the people of Dan said to him, “Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and you lose your life with the lives of your household.”26Then the people of Dan went their way. And when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his home.27But the people of Dan took what Micah had made, and the priest who belonged to him, and they came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and struck them with the edge of the sword and burned the city with fire. (Jos 19:47; Jud 18:7; Jud 18:10)28And there was no deliverer because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with anyone. It was in the valley that belongs to Beth-rehob. Then they rebuilt the city and lived in it. (Nu 13:21; Jos 19:28; Jud 18:7; 2Sa 10:6)29And they named the city Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor, who was born to Israel; but the name of the city was Laish at the first. (Ge 14:14; Jud 18:7; Jud 20:1; 1Ki 12:29; 1Ki 15:20)30And the people of Dan set up the carved image for themselves, and Jonathan the son of Gershom, son of Moses,[3] and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land. (Ex 2:22; Ex 18:3; Jud 13:1; Jud 17:12; 1Sa 4:2; 1Sa 4:10; Ps 78:60)31So they set up Micah’s carved image that he made, as long as the house of God was at Shiloh. (Jos 18:1; 1Sa 1:3)
Judges 18
King James Version
1In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.2And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.3When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place ? and what hast thou here?4And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.5And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.6And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.7Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.8And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye?9And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.10When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.11And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.12And they went up, and pitched in Kirjathjearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahanehdan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjathjearim.13And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.14Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.15And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.16And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.17And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.18And these went into Micah' house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?19And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?20And the priest' heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.21So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.22And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah' house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.23And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?24And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?25And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.26And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.27And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.28And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Bethrehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.29And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.30And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.31And they set them up Micah' graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
