The Words of King Lemuel

1 The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him: 2 What are you doing, my son?^[1] What are you doing, son of my womb? What are you doing, son of my vows? 4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink, (1Ki 16:9; 1Ki 20:16; Pr 20:1; Ec 10:17; Ho 4:11)

5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed and pervert the rights of all the afflicted. (Isa 5:22) 6 Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress;^[2] (Job 3:20; Job 29:13) 7 let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. The Woman Who Fears the Lord

10 ^[4] An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. (Ru 3:11; Job 28:18; Pr 12:4; Pr 18:22; Pr 19:14)

11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. (Pr 31:21; Pr 31:24) 14 She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. 15 She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. (Ps 111:5; Pr 20:13; Lu 12:42) 16 She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. 17 She dresses herself^[5] with strength and makes her arms strong. (Pr 31:25) 18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. 19 She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. 20 She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. 23 Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. (Ru 4:1) 24 She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. (Jud 14:12; Isa 3:23) 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. (Pr 31:17) 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” (Pr 31:10; So 6:9) 30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. (Pr 11:16) 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.

1 Worte an Lemuël, den König, prophetisches Wort. / Mit ihnen hat seine Mutter ihn erzogen: 2 Was soll ich dir sagen, mein Sohn, was, / du Sohn meines Schoßes, / was, du Sohn meiner Gelübde? 3 Gib deine Kraft nicht den Frauen hin, / dein Tun und Treiben nicht denen, die Könige verderben! 4 Könige sollen sich nicht, Lemuël, / Könige sollen sich nicht mit Wein betrinken, / Fürsten nicht berauschenden Trank begehren. 5 Er könnte beim Trinken seine Pflicht vergessen / und das Recht aller Notleidenden verdrehen. 6 Gebt berauschenden Trank dem, der zusammenbricht, / und Wein denen, die im Herzen verbittert sind! 7 Ein solcher möge trinken und seine Armut vergessen / und nicht mehr an seine Mühsal denken. 8 Öffne deinen Mund für den Stummen, / für das Recht aller Schwachen! 9 Öffne deinen Mund, richte gerecht, / verschaff dem Bedürftigen und Armen Recht! 10 Eine tüchtige Frau, wer findet sie? / Sie übertrifft alle Perlen an Wert. (Pr 3:15; Pr 8:11) 11 Das Herz ihres Mannes vertraut auf sie / und es fehlt ihm nicht an Gewinn. 12 Sie tut ihm Gutes und nichts Böses / alle Tage ihres Lebens. 13 Sie sorgt für Wolle und Flachs / und arbeitet voll Lust mit ihren Händen. 14 Sie gleicht den Schiffen des Kaufmanns: / Aus der Ferne holt sie ihre Nahrung. 15 Noch bei Nacht steht sie auf, / um ihrem Haus Speise zu geben / und den Mägden, was ihnen zusteht. 16 Sie überlegt es und kauft einen Acker, / vom Ertrag ihrer Hände pflanzt sie einen Weinberg. 17 Sie gürtet ihre Hüften mit Kraft / und macht ihre Arme stark. 18 Sie spürt den Erfolg ihrer Arbeit, / auch des Nachts erlischt ihre Lampe nicht. 19 Nach dem Spinnrocken greift ihre Hand, / ihre Finger fassen die Spindel. 20 Sie öffnet ihre Hand für den Bedürftigen / und reicht ihre Hände dem Armen. 21 Ihr bangt nicht für ihr Haus vor dem Schnee; / denn ihr ganzes Haus ist in prächtigem Rot gekleidet. 22 Sie hat sich Decken gefertigt, / Leinen und Purpur sind ihr Gewand. 23 Ihr Mann ist in den Torhallen geachtet, / wenn er zu Rat sitzt mit den Ältesten des Landes. 24 Sie webt Tücher und verkauft sie, / Gürtel liefert sie dem Händler. 25 Kraft und Würde sind ihr Gewand, / sie spottet der drohenden Zukunft. 26 Sie öffnet ihren Mund in Weisheit / und Unterweisung in Güte ist auf ihrer Zunge. 27 Sie achtet auf das, was in ihrem Haus vorgeht, / Brot der Faulheit isst sie nicht. 28 Ihre Kinder stehen auf und preisen sie glücklich, / auch ihr Mann erhebt sich und rühmt sie: 29 Viele Frauen erwiesen sich tüchtig, / doch du übertriffst sie alle. 30 Trügerisch ist Anmut, vergänglich die Schönheit, / eine Frau, die den HERRN fürchtet, sie allein soll man rühmen.
