Tola and Jair

1 After Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, and he lived at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. (Jos 24:33; Jud 2:16; Jud 10:12) 2 And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried at Shamir. 3 After him arose Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years. 4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities, called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. (De 3:14; Jud 5:10; Jud 12:14) 5 And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.

Further Disobedience and Oppression

6 The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the Lord and did not serve him. (De 31:16; Jud 2:11; Jud 2:13; Jud 10:10; Jud 10:13; 1Ki 11:5; 1Ki 11:7; 1Ki 11:33; 2Ki 23:13)

7 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, (Jud 2:14) 8 and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 9 And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed. 10 And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against you, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.” (Jud 3:9; Jud 10:6; Jud 10:13) 11 And the Lord said to the people of Israel, “Did I not save you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? DIE RICHTER TOLA UND JAÏR

1 Nach Abimelech trat Tola auf, der Sohn Puwas, des Sohnes Dodos, um Israel zu retten, ein Mann aus Issachar. Er wohnte in Schamir auf dem Gebirge Efraim. (Ge 46:13; Nu 26:23) 2 Er richtete Israel dreiundzwanzig Jahre lang. Dann starb er und wurde in Schamir begraben. 3 Nach ihm trat Jaïr aus Gilead auf; er richtete Israel zweiundzwanzig Jahre lang. (Nu 32:41; De 3:14; Jos 13:30) 4 Er hatte dreißig Söhne, die auf dreißig Eseln ritten und dreißig Städte besaßen. Man nennt sie bis auf den heutigen Tag die Zeltdörfer Jaïrs; sie liegen im Land Gilead. 5 Jaïr starb und wurde in Kamon begraben.

6 Die Israeliten taten wieder, was in den Augen des HERRN böse ist. Sie dienten den Baalen und Astarten, den Göttern Arams, den Göttern Sidons, den Göttern Moabs, den Göttern der Ammoniter und den Göttern der Philister. Sie verließen den HERRN und dienten ihm nicht. 7 Deshalb entbrannte der Zorn des HERRN gegen Israel und er lieferte sie in die Hand der Philister und der Ammoniter aus. 8 Sie zerschlugen und misshandelten die Israeliten in jener Zeit achtzehn Jahre lang, alle Israeliten jenseits des Jordan im Land der Amoriter, in Gilead. 9 Dann kamen die Ammoniter über den Jordan, um auch gegen Juda, Benjamin und das Haus Efraim Krieg zu führen. Israel geriet in große Bedrängnis, 10 und die Israeliten schrien zum HERRN: Wir haben gegen dich gesündigt; denn wir haben unseren Gott verlassen und den Baalen gedient. 11 Der HERR erwiderte den Israeliten: Nicht wahr, von Ägypten an, auch von den Amoritern, Ammonitern und Philistern her, 12 und als die Sidonier, Amalek und Maon euch unterdrückt haben und ihr zu mir geschrien habt, da habe ich euch aus ihrer Hand gerettet. 13 Ihr aber habt mich verlassen und anderen Göttern gedient. Darum werde ich euch nicht mehr retten. 14 Geht und schreit doch zu den Göttern, die ihr euch erwählt habt; sollen doch die euch retten in der Zeit eurer Not. 15 Die Israeliten sagten zum HERRN: Wir haben gesündigt. Handle du an uns ganz so, wie es gut ist in deinen Augen, nur rette uns heute! 16 Und sie entfernten die fremden Götter aus ihrer Mitte und dienten dem HERRN. Da wurde ihm die Mühsal Israels unerträglich.

17 Die Ammoniter wurden aufgeboten und schlugen ihr Lager in Gilead auf. Auch die Israeliten versammelten sich; sie bezogen ihr Lager in Mizpa. 18 Das Volk, die Obersten Gileads, sagten zueinander: Wer ist der Mann, der den Kampf gegen die Ammoniter aufnimmt? Er soll das Haupt aller Bewohner Gileads werden.
