1 Sei nicht vorschnell mit deinem Mund, und dein Herz eile nicht, ein Wort vor Gott hervorzubringen! Denn Gott ist im Himmel, und du bist auf der Erde; darum seien deine Worte wenige. (Hi 22,12; Spr 10,19; Mt 6,7) 2 Denn bei viel Geschäftigkeit kommt der Traum und bei vielen Worten törichte Rede^[1]. – (Pred 10,12) 3 Wenn du Gott ein Gelübde ablegst, zögere nicht, es zu erfüllen! Denn er hat kein Gefallen an den Toren^[2]. Was du gelobst, erfülle! (3Mo 27,2) 4 Besser, dass du nicht gelobst, als dass du gelobst und nicht erfüllst. (Spr 20,25) 5 Gestatte deinem Mund nicht, dass er dein Fleisch in Sünde bringt^[3]! Und sprich nicht vor dem Boten ⟨Gottes⟩: Es war ein Versehen^[4]! Wozu soll Gott über deine Stimme zürnen und das Werk deiner Hände verderben? (3Mo 5,4; Mal 2,7) 6 Denn bei vielen Träumen und Nichtigkeiten sind auch viele Worte^[5]. So fürchte Gott! Nichtigkeit des Reichtums – Rat zu einfacher Lebensführung

7 Wenn du Unterdrückung des Armen und Raub von Recht und Gerechtigkeit im Land siehst, wundere dich nicht über die Sache^[6], denn ein Hoher wacht über dem ⟨anderen⟩ Hohen, und Hohe über ihnen ⟨beiden⟩. (Pred 3,16; Pred 8,9; 1Petr 4,12) 8 Doch ein Gewinn für das Land ist bei alldem ⟨dies⟩: Ein König, ⟨der⟩ für das bebaute Feld ⟨sorgt⟩. (2Chr 26,10) 9 Wer Geld liebt, wird des Geldes nicht satt, und wer den Reichtum liebt, nicht des Ertrages. Auch das ist Nichtigkeit. – (Pred 4,8; Pred 6,7) 10 Wenn das Gut sich mehrt, so mehren sich die, die davon zehren. Und welchen Nutzen hat sein Besitzer, als dass seine Augen es ansehen^[7]? – 11 Süß ist der Schlaf des Arbeiters, ob er wenig oder viel isst; aber der Überfluss^[8] des Reichen lässt ihn nicht schlafen. – 12 Es gibt ein schlimmes^[9] Übel, das ich unter der Sonne gesehen habe: Reichtum, der von seinem Besitzer zu seinem Unglück aufbewahrt wird. 13 Und geht solcher Reichtum durch ein unglückliches Ereignis^[10] verloren und hat er einen Sohn gezeugt, so ist gar nichts in dessen Hand. (Spr 23,4; Spr 27,24) 14 Wie er aus dem Leib seiner Mutter hervorgekommen ist, nackt wird er wieder hingehen, wie er gekommen ist, und für seine Mühe wird er nicht das Geringste davontragen, das er in seiner Hand mitnehmen könnte. (Hi 1,21; Ps 49,18; 1Tim 6,7) 15 Und auch dies ist ein schlimmes^[11] Übel: Ganz wie er gekommen ist, wird er hingehen. Und was für einen Gewinn hat er davon, dass er für den Wind sich müht? (Hos 12,2) 16 Auch isst er all seine Tage in Finsternis^[12] und hat viel Verdruss und Krankheit^[13] und Zorn. 17 Siehe, was ich als gut, was ich als schön erkannt habe: Dass einer isst und trinkt und Gutes sieht bei all seiner Mühe, mit der er sich abmüht unter der Sonne, die Zahl seiner Lebenstage, die Gott ihm gegeben hat; denn das ist sein Teil. (Pred 2,10; Pred 7,14) 18 Auch jeder Mensch, dem Gott Reichtum und Güter^[14] gegeben und den er ermächtigt hat, davon zu genießen^[15] und sein Teil zu nehmen und sich bei seiner Mühe zu freuen – das ist eine Gabe Gottes. (Pred 3,13) 19 Denn er denkt nicht viel an die Tage seines Lebens, weil Gott ihn mit der Freude seines Herzens beschäftigt. (Pred 6,2)

Keep your promise to God

1 Be careful what you say when you go to God’s house. Go there to listen. Don’t be like foolish people when you offer your sacrifice. They do what is wrong and don’t even know it. 2 Don’t be too quick to speak. Don’t be in a hurry to say anything to God. God is in heaven. You are on earth. So use only a few words when you speak. 3 Many worries result in dreams. Many words result in foolish talk. 4 When you make a promise to God, don’t wait too long to carry it out. He isn’t pleased with foolish people. So do what you have promised. 5 It is not good to make a promise and not keep it. It is better to make no promise at all. 6 Don’t let your mouth cause you to sin. Don’t say to the temple messenger, ‘My promise was a mistake.’ Why should God be angry with what you say? Why should he destroy what you have done? 7 Dreaming too much and talking too much are meaningless. So have respect for God.

Riches are meaningless

8 Suppose you see poor people being ill-treated somewhere. And what is being done to them isn’t right or fair. Don’t be surprised by that. One official is watched by a higher one. Officials who are even higher are watching both of them. 9 All of them take what the land produces. And the king himself takes his share from the fields. 10 Anyone who loves money never has enough. Anyone who loves wealth is never satisfied with what they get. That doesn’t have any meaning either. 11 As more and more goods are made, more and more people use them up. So how can those goods benefit their owners? All they can do is look at them with desire. 12 The sleep of a worker is sweet. It doesn’t matter whether they eat a little or a lot. But the wealth of rich people keeps them awake at night. 13 I’ve seen something very evil on earth. It’s when wealth is stored up and then brings harm to its owners. 14 It’s also when wealth is lost because of an unwise business deal. Then there won’t be anything left for the owners’ children. 15 Everyone is born naked. They come into the world with nothing. And they go out of it with nothing. They don’t get anything from their work that they can take with them. 16 Here’s something else that is very evil. Everyone is born, and everyone dies. And what do they get for their work? Nothing. It’s like working for the wind. 17 All their lives they eat in darkness. Their lives are full of trouble, suffering and anger. 18 I have seen what is good. It is good for a person to eat and drink. It’s good for them to be satisfied with their hard work on this earth. That’s what they should do during the short life God has given them. That’s what God made them for. 19 Sometimes God gives a person wealth and possessions. God makes it possible for that person to enjoy them. God helps them accept the life he has given them. God helps them to be happy in their work. All these things are gifts from God. 20 A person like that doesn’t have to think about how their life is going. That’s because God fills their heart with joy.
