1 Als Jesus dies gesagt hatte, ging er mit seinen Jüngern hinaus über den Bach Kidron, wo ein Garten war, in den er hineinging, er und seine Jünger. (2Sam 15,23; Mt 26,30) 2 Aber auch Judas, der ihn überlieferte, wusste den Ort, weil Jesus dort oft mit seinen Jüngern zusammen war. (Mk 3,19; Joh 6,71; Joh 8,1) 3 Als nun Judas die Schar^[1] und von den Hohen Priestern und Pharisäern Diener genommen hatte, kommt er dahin mit Leuchten und Fackeln und Waffen. (Mt 26,46) 4 Jesus nun, der alles wusste, was über ihn kommen würde, ging hinaus und sprach zu ihnen: Wen sucht ihr? (Joh 13,1) 5 Sie antworteten ihm: Jesus, den Nazoräer^[2]. 6 Als er nun zu ihnen sagte: Ich bin ⟨es⟩!, wichen sie zurück und fielen zu Boden. (Ps 27,2) 7 Da fragte er sie wieder: Wen sucht ihr? Verhör durch Hannas – Verleugnung durch Petrus

12 Die Schar nun und der Oberst^[5] und die Diener der Juden nahmen Jesus und banden ihn; 13 und sie führten ihn zuerst hin zu Hannas, denn er war Schwiegervater des Kaiphas, der jenes Jahr Hoher Priester war. (Joh 11,49; Apg 4,6) 14 Kaiphas aber war es, der den Juden geraten hatte, es sei nützlich, dass ein Mensch für das Volk sterbe. (Joh 11,50) 15 Simon Petrus aber folgte Jesus und ein anderer Jünger. Dieser Jünger aber war dem Hohen Priester bekannt und ging mit Jesus hinein in den Hof des Hohen Priesters. (Joh 20,2) 16 Petrus aber stand an der Tür draußen. Da ging der andere Jünger, der dem Hohen Priester bekannt war, hinaus und sprach mit der Türhüterin und führte Petrus hinein. 17 Da spricht die Magd, die Türhüterin, zu Petrus: Bist nicht auch du ⟨einer⟩ von den Jüngern dieses Menschen? Er sagt: Ich bin es nicht. 18 Es standen aber die Knechte^[6] und die Diener da, die ein Kohlenfeuer gemacht hatten, weil es kalt war, und wärmten sich; Petrus aber stand auch bei ihnen und wärmte sich. 19 Der Hohe Priester nun fragte Jesus über seine Jünger und über seine Lehre. 20 Jesus antwortete ihm: Ich habe öffentlich zu der Welt geredet; ich habe allezeit in der Synagoge und in dem Tempel gelehrt, wo alle Juden zusammenkommen, und im Verborgenen habe ich nichts geredet. (Joh 7,14) 21 Was fragst du mich? Frage die, welche gehört haben, was ich zu ihnen geredet habe; siehe, diese wissen, was ich gesagt habe. 22 Als er aber dies sagte, gab einer der Diener, der dabeistand, Jesus einen Schlag ⟨ins Gesicht⟩ und sagte: Antwortest du so dem Hohen Priester? (Joh 19,3; Apg 23,2) 23 Jesus antwortete ihm: Wenn ich schlecht geredet habe, so gib Zeugnis von dem Schlechten! Wenn aber recht, was schlägst du mich? (1Petr 2,23) 24 Hannas nun sandte ihn gebunden zu Kaiphas, dem Hohen Priester. 25 Simon Petrus aber stand da und wärmte sich. Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Bist nicht auch du ⟨einer⟩ von seinen Jüngern? Er leugnete und sprach: Ich bin es nicht. 26 Es spricht einer von den Knechten^[7] des Hohen Priesters, der ein Verwandter dessen war, dem Petrus das Ohr abgehauen hatte: Sah ich dich nicht in dem Garten bei ihm? (Joh 18,10) 27 Da leugnete Petrus wieder; und gleich darauf krähte der Hahn. (Mt 27,2; Mk 15,1; Lk 23,1; Joh 13,38)

Verhör durch Pilatus

28 Sie führen nun Jesus von Kaiphas in das Prätorium^[8]; es war aber frühmorgens. Und sie gingen nicht hinein in das Prätorium, damit sie sich nicht verunreinigten, sondern das Passah⟨mahl⟩ essen ⟨konnten⟩. (2Chr 30,18) 29 Pilatus^[9] ging nun zu ihnen hinaus und sprach: Welche Anklage bringt ihr gegen diesen Menschen vor? 30 Sie antworteten und sprachen zu ihm: Wenn dieser nicht ein Übeltäter wäre, würden wir ihn dir nicht überliefert haben. 31 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihnen: Nehmt ihr ihn und richtet ihn nach eurem Gesetz. Da sprachen die Juden zu ihm: Es ist uns nicht erlaubt, jemanden zu töten; (Joh 19,6; Apg 18,15) 32 damit das Wort Jesu erfüllt wurde, das er sprach, um anzudeuten, welches Todes er sterben sollte. (Joh 12,33) 33 Pilatus ging nun wieder hinein in das Prätorium und rief Jesus und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der König der Juden? (Joh 19,19) 34 Jesus antwortete: Sagst du dies von dir selbst aus, oder haben dir andere von mir gesagt? 35 Pilatus antwortete: Bin ich etwa ein Jude? Deine Nation und die Hohen Priester haben dich mir überliefert. Was hast du getan? (Joh 19,11; Apg 4,26) 36 Jesus antwortete: Mein Reich^[10] ist nicht von dieser Welt; wenn mein Reich^[11] von dieser Welt wäre, so hätten meine Diener gekämpft, damit ich den Juden nicht überliefert würde, jetzt aber ist mein Reich^[12] nicht von hier. (Lk 17,20; Joh 6,15) 37 Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: Also bist du doch ein König? Jesus antwortete: Du sagst es, dass ich ein König bin. Ich bin dazu geboren und dazu in die Welt gekommen, dass ich für die Wahrheit Zeugnis gebe. Jeder, der aus der Wahrheit ist, hört meine Stimme. (Joh 8,47; Joh 12,13; 1Tim 6,13; Offb 1,5)

38 Pilatus spricht zu ihm: Was ist Wahrheit? Und als er dies gesagt hatte, ging er wieder zu den Juden hinaus und spricht zu ihnen: Ich finde keinerlei Schuld an ihm. (Joh 7,18) 39 Es ist aber ein Brauch bei euch, dass ich euch an dem Passah einen losgebe. Wollt ihr nun, dass ich euch den König der Juden losgebe? 40 Da schrien sie wieder^[13] alle und sagten: Nicht diesen, sondern den Barabbas! Barabbas aber war ein Räuber. Jesus is arrested

1 When Jesus had finished praying, he left with his disciples. They crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden. Jesus and his disciples went into it. 2 Judas knew the place. He was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies. Jesus had often met in that place with his disciples. 3 So Judas came to the garden. He was guiding a group of soldiers and some officials. The chief priests and the Pharisees had sent them. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. 4 Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him. So he went out and asked them, ‘Who do you want?’ 5 ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘I am he,’ Jesus said. Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, was standing there with them. 6 When Jesus said, ‘I am he,’ they moved back. Then they fell to the ground. 7 He asked them again, ‘Who do you want?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they said. 8 Jesus answered, ‘I told you I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’ 9 This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken would come true. He had said, ‘I have not lost anyone God has given me.’ (Joh 6,39) 10 Simon Peter had a sword and pulled it out. He struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus. 11 Jesus commanded Peter, ‘Put your sword away! Shouldn’t I drink the cup of suffering the Father has given me?’ 12 Then the group of soldiers, their commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They tied him up 13 and brought him first to Annas. He was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest at that time. 14 Caiaphas had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.

Peter says he is not Jesus’ disciple

15 Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. The high priest knew the other disciple. So that disciple went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard. 16 But Peter had to wait outside by the door. The other disciple came back. He was the one the high priest knew. He spoke to the servant woman who was on duty there. Then he brought Peter in. 17 She asked Peter, ‘You aren’t one of Jesus’ disciples too, are you?’ ‘I am not,’ he replied. 18 It was cold. The slaves and officials stood around a fire. They had made it to keep warm. Peter was also standing with them. He was warming himself.

The high priest questions Jesus

19 Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus. He asked him about his disciples and his teaching. 20 ‘I have spoken openly to the world,’ Jesus replied. ‘I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I didn’t say anything in secret. 21 Why question me? Ask the people who heard me. They certainly know what I said.’ 22 When Jesus said that, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. ‘Is this any way to answer the high priest?’ he asked. 23 ‘Have I said something wrong?’ Jesus replied. ‘If I have, then tell everyone what it was. But if I spoke the truth, why did you hit me?’ 24 Annas sent him, tied up, to Caiaphas, the high priest.

Peter again says he is not Jesus’ disciple

25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself by the fire. So they asked him, ‘You aren’t one of Jesus’ disciples too, are you?’ He said, ‘I am not.’ 26 One of the high priest’s slaves was a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off. He said to Peter, ‘Didn’t I see you with Jesus in the garden?’ 27 Again Peter said no. At that exact moment a cockerel began to crow.

Jesus is brought to Pilate

28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning. The Jewish leaders did not want to be made ‘unclean’. They wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal. So they did not enter the palace. 29 Pilate came out to them. He asked, ‘What charges are you bringing against this man?’ 30 ‘He has committed crimes,’ they replied. ‘If he hadn’t, we would not have handed him over to you.’ 31 Pilate said, ‘Take him yourselves. Judge him by your own law.’ ‘But we don’t have the right to put anyone to death,’ they complained. 32 This happened so that what Jesus said about how he was going to die would come true. 33 Then Pilate went back inside the palace. He ordered Jesus to be brought to him. Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ 34 ‘Is that your own idea?’ Jesus asked. ‘Or did others talk to you about me?’ 35 ‘Am I a Jew?’ Pilate replied. ‘Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?’ 36 Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not from this world. If it were, those who serve me would fight. They would try to keep the Jewish leaders from arresting me. My kingdom is from another place.’ 37 ‘So you are a king, then!’ said Pilate. Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. In fact, that’s the reason I was born. I was born and came into the world to be a witness to the truth. Everyone who is on the side of truth listens to me.’ 38 ‘What is truth?’ Pilate replied. Then Pilate went out again to the Jews gathered there. He said, ‘I find no basis for any charge against him. 39 But you have a practice at Passover time. At that time, you ask me to set one prisoner free for you. Do you want me to set “the king of the Jews” free?’ 40 They shouted back, ‘No! Not him! Give us Barabbas!’ Barabbas had taken part in an armed struggle against the country’s rulers.
