La Natividad

1 En aquellos días aconteció que se promulgó un edicto de parte de César Augusto, para que toda la tierra habitada fuera empadronada. 2 Primer censo que ocurrió siendo Cirenio gobernador de Siria. 3 E iban todos a registrarse, cada uno a su ciudad. 4 José subió pues de Galilea, de la ciudad de Nazaret, a Judea, a la ciudad de David, llamada Bet-léhem (por cuanto era de la casa y familia de David), 5 para ser inscrito junto con Miriam, su esposa, la cual estaba encinta. 6 Y aconteció que mientras ellos estaban allí, se le cumplieron los días de dar a luz, 7 y dio a luz a su hijo primogénito, y lo envolvió en pañales, y lo recostó en un pesebre, porque no había sitio para ellos en la posada.

Visto de los ángeles

8 Y había pastores en aquella región posando a campo abierto, guardando por turnos la vigilia de la noche sobre sus rebaños. 9 Y un ángel del Señor se presentó ante ellos, y la gloria del Señor los rodeó de resplandor, y tuvieron gran temor. 10 Pero el ángel les dijo: ¡No temáis! pues he aquí os doy buenas nuevas de gran gozo, que será para todo el pueblo: 11 ¡Hoy os nació en la ciudad de David un Salvador, que es el Mesías, el Señor! 12 Y esto os será la señal: Hallaréis a un niño envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre. 13 Y repentinamente, junto con aquel ángel, apareció una multitud del ejército celestial alabando a Dios, y diciendo: 14 ¡Gloria a Dios en las alturas, Y en la tierra paz entre los hombres de su elección! 15 Y aconteció que cuando los ángeles se apartaron de ellos al cielo, los pastores decían unos a otros: Vayamos ahora a Bet-léhem, y veamos esto que ha sucedido, que el Señor nos manifestó. 16 Y apresurándose, fueron y hallaron juntos a Miriam y a José, y al niño acostado en el pesebre. 17 Y después de verlo, manifestaron lo que les fue dicho acerca del niño. 18 Y todos los que lo oyeron, se maravillaron de las cosas dichas por los pastores. 19 Y Miriam guardaba todas estas palabras, meditándolas en su corazón. 20 Y los pastores regresaron glorificando y alabando a Dios por todo lo que habían oído y visto, tal como les había sido dicho. 21 Y cuando se cumplieron ocho días para circuncidarlo, entonces fue llamado su nombre Jesús; el cual le puso el ángel antes de que ella quedara encinta.

La presentación

22 Cuando se cumplieron los días de la purificación de ellos, según la ley de Moisés, lo subieron a Jerusalem para presentarlo al Señor 23 (como está escrito en la ley del Señor: Todo varón que abre matriz será llamado santo al Señor), 24 y para llevar un sacrificio conforme a lo dicho en la ley del Señor: Un par de tórtolas, o dos palominos.

Simeón

25 Y he aquí había en Jerusalem un hombre cuyo nombre era Simeón. Y este hombre justo y devoto esperaba la liberación de Israel; y el Espíritu Santo estaba sobre él. 26 Y le había sido revelado por el Espíritu Santo que no vería la muerte antes que viera al Ungido del Señor. 27 Y por el Espíritu entró en el templo; y cuando los padres trajeron adentro al niño Jesús, para hacer con Él conforme al rito de la ley, 28 también él lo tomó en sus brazos, y bendijo a Dios, y dijo: 29 Ahora, Soberano, despides a tu siervo en paz, Conforme a tu palabra; 30 Porque mis ojos vieron tu salvación, 31 La cual preparaste en presencia de todos los pueblos; 32 Luz para revelación de los gentiles Y gloria de tu pueblo Israel. 33 Y su padre y su madre estaban maravillados de las cosas que se decían acerca de Él. 34 Y Simeón los bendijo, y dijo a su madre Miriam: He aquí, Éste está puesto para caída y levantamiento de muchos en Israel, y para señal que es contradicha 35 (a tu misma alma también traspasará una espada), para que sean revelados los pensamientos de muchos corazones.

Ana

36 Estaba también allí cierta profetisa llamada Ana, hija de Fanuel, de la tribu de Aser. Ésta, de edad muy avanzada, había vivido con su marido siete años desde su virginidad. 37 Y era viuda de hacía ochenta y cuatro años, y no se alejaba del templo, sirviendo de noche y de día con ayunos y oraciones. 38 También ésta, presentándose en la misma hora, daba gracias a Dios, y hablaba acerca de Él a todos los que esperaban la liberación de Jerusalem.

Regreso a Nazaret

39 Y cuando hubieron cumplido todas las cosas conforme a la ley del Señor, regresaron a Galilea, a su propia ciudad de Nazaret. 40 Y el niño crecía y se fortalecía, llenándose de sabiduría, y la gracia de Dios estaba sobre Él. 41 E iban sus padres cada año a Jerusalem, a la fiesta de la pascua. 42 Y cuando Él llegó a ser de doce años, subieron conforme a la costumbre de la fiesta. 43 Y habiéndose cumplido los días, mientras ellos regresaban, el joven Jesús se quedó en Jerusalem sin que sus padres lo supieran. 44 Suponiendo pues que estaba en la caravana, anduvieron camino de un día, y lo buscaban entre los parientes y conocidos. 45 Pero al no hallarlo, se volvieron a Jerusalem buscándolo. 46 Y aconteció que después de tres días, lo hallaron en el templo, sentado en medio de los maestros, no sólo oyéndolos, sino también haciéndoles preguntas. 47 Y cuantos lo oían quedaban asombrados de su inteligencia y de sus respuestas. 48 Y al verlo, se sorprendieron, y su madre le dijo: Hijo, ¿por qué nos hiciste esto? ¡He aquí tu padre y yo te hemos buscado angustiados! 49 Les dijo: ¿Por qué me buscabais? ¿No sabíais que es necesario que esté en las cosas de mi Padre? 50 Pero ellos no entendieron la palabra que les habló. 51 Y descendió con ellos y fue a Nazaret, y estaba sujeto a ellos. Y su madre guardaba todas las cosas en su corazón. 52 Y Jesús crecía en sabiduría y en estatura, y en favor para con Dios y los hombres.

1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. 21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) 24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. 33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. 34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; 35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. 36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. 39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
