El siervo y Rebeca

1 Era Abraham anciano, entrado en días, y YHVH había bendecido a Abraham en todo. 2 Y dijo Abraham a su siervo, el más antiguo de su casa, el cual gobernaba todo lo que tenía: Pon ahora tu mano bajo mi muslo, 3 y te haré jurar por YHVH, Dios de los cielos y Dios de la tierra, que no tomarás para mi hijo mujer de las hijas de los cananeos, en medio de los cuales yo habito, 4 sino que irás a mi tierra y a mi parentela y tomarás mujer para mi hijo Isaac. 5 Y el siervo le dijo: Quizá esa mujer no consienta en venir tras de mí a esta tierra. ¿He de hacer volver a tu hijo a la tierra de donde saliste? 6 Entonces Abraham le dijo: Guárdate de no hacer volver a mi hijo allá. 7 YHVH, Dios de los cielos, que me tomó de la casa de mi padre y de la tierra de mi parentela, y me habló y me juró diciendo: A tu descendencia daré esta tierra, Él mismo enviará su ángel delante de ti y de allá tomarás mujer para mi hijo. 8 Y si la mujer no consiente en venir tras de ti, entonces quedarás desligado de éste, mi juramento, pero no hagas volver a mi hijo allá. 9 Entonces el siervo puso su mano bajo el muslo de su señor Abraham y le juró sobre este asunto. 10 Y tomó el siervo diez camellos de entre los camellos de su señor, y partió con todo lo bueno de su señor en su mano. Se levantó, pues, y se fue a Aram Naharayim, a la ciudad de Nacor. 11 Y en las afueras de la ciudad, hizo arrodillar los camellos junto a un pozo de agua, al tiempo del atardecer, al momento en que salen las aguadoras, 12 y dijo: ¡YHVH, Dios de mi señor Abraham, haz que hoy me suceda, te ruego, haz misericordia a mi señor Abraham! 13 He aquí, yo estoy junto a una fuente de agua, y las hijas de los habitantes de la ciudad salen a sacar agua. 14 Sea, pues, que la joven a quien yo diga: Inclina tu cántaro, te ruego, y beberé, y ella responda: Bebe, y también abrevaré tus camellos, ésa sea la que designaste para tu siervo Isaac, y por ella sabré que has hecho misericordia con mi señor. 15 Y aconteció que antes que él acabara de hablar, he aquí Rebeca, la cual le había nacido a Betuel, hijo de Milca, mujer de Nacor, hermano de Abraham, iba llegando con su cántaro al hombro. 16 Y la muchacha era de apariencia muy hermosa, virgen, a la que ningún varón había conocido. Y descendiendo a la fuente, llenó su cántaro y subió. 17 Entonces el siervo corrió a su encuentro, y le dijo: Te ruego que me des a beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro. 18 Ella dijo: Bebe, señor mío. Y se apresuró a bajar el cántaro sobre su mano y le dio de beber. 19 Cuando acabó de darle de beber, dijo entonces: También sacaré para tus camellos hasta que acaben de beber. 20 Y se apresuró y vació su cántaro en el abrevadero, y corrió otra vez al pozo para sacar agua y sacó para todos sus camellos. 21 El hombre, fijando la vista en ella, callaba, para saber si YHVH había prosperado o no su camino. 22 Y aconteció que cuando los camellos acabaron de beber, tomó el hombre un arete de oro que pesaba medio siclo, y dos brazaletes de oro que pesaban diez, 23 y le preguntó: ¿De quién eres hija? Dime te ruego: ¿Hay lugar en casa de tu padre para que nosotros pasemos la noche? 24 Y ella le dijo: Yo soy hija de Betuel, el hijo de Milca que dio a luz a Nacor. 25 Y añadió: También hay en nuestra casa paja, también mucho forraje, también lugar para pasar la noche. 26 Entonces el hombre hizo reverencia y se postró ante YHVH, 27 y dijo: Bendito sea YHVH, Dios de mi señor Abraham, que no apartó su misericordia y su fidelidad hacia mi señor, y puesto yo en camino, me condujo YHVH a casa de los hermanos de mi señor. 28 Entonces la muchacha echó a correr y refirió estas cosas en casa de su madre. 29 Tenía Rebeca un hermano llamado Labán, el cual corrió hacia el que estaba fuera, junto a la fuente; 30 y cuando Labán vio el arete y los brazaletes en las muñecas de su hermana, y oyó las palabras de su hermana Rebeca diciendo: Así me habló este hombre; corrió a éste, quien, por cierto, permanecía con los camellos junto a la fuente, 31 y le dijo: Entra, bendito de YHVH, ¿por qué te quedas afuera?, pues yo he preparado la casa y lugar para los camellos. 32 Entonces el hombre entró en la casa, y él le desató los camellos, y les dio paja y forraje a los camellos. También le dio agua para lavar sus pies, y los pies de los hombres que estaban con él. 33 Y fue preparado ante él para comer, pero dijo: No comeré hasta que haya expresado mis palabras. Y dijo: ¡Habla! 34 Dijo, pues: Yo soy siervo de Abraham, 35 y YHVH ha bendecido mucho a mi señor, y se ha engrandecido, pues le ha dado ovejas y vacadas, plata y oro, siervos y siervas, y camellos y asnos. 36 Y Sara, mujer de mi señor, dio a luz en su vejez un hijo a mi señor, quien le ha dado todo lo que posee. 37 Ahora bien, mi señor me ha juramentado, diciendo: No tomarás para mi hijo mujer de las hijas del cananeo, en cuya tierra yo habito, 38 sino que irás a casa de mi padre y a mi familia, y tomarás mujer para mi hijo. 39 Y yo dije a mi señor: Quizá la mujer no quiera seguirme. 40 Y me contestó: YHVH, en cuya presencia he andado, enviará a su ángel contigo y prosperará tu camino, y podrás tomar mujer para mi hijo de entre mi familia y de la casa de mi padre. 41 Entonces, cuando hayas llegado a mi familia, quedarás desligado de mi imprecación. Así que, si no quieren dártela, habrás quedado libre de mi imprecación. 42 Así, pues, llegué hoy a la fuente y dije: YHVH, Dios de mi señor Abraham, si está en ti, te ruego que hagas prosperar mi camino por el cual yo ando. 43 Heme aquí de pie junto a la fuente del agua. Sea, pues, que la doncella que salga a sacar agua, a quien yo le diga: Te ruego que me des a beber un poco de agua de tu cántaro, 44 y me conteste: Bebe tú mismo, y también sacaré para tus camellos, sea ésta la mujer que YHVH ha destinado para el hijo de mi señor. 45 Y antes que yo acabara de hablar en mi corazón, he aquí Rebeca salía con su cántaro al hombro descendiendo a la fuente. Cuando sacó agua, entonces le dije: Te ruego que me des de beber. 46 Y se apresuró y bajó su cántaro sobre sí, y respondió: Bebe, y también abrevaré tus camellos. Y bebí, y ella abrevó los camellos. 47 Y le pregunté diciendo: ¿De quién eres hija? Y respondió: Soy hija de Betuel, el hijo de Nacor que le dio a luz Milca. Entonces le puse el arete en la nariz y los brazaletes en sus manos. 48 E hice reverencia y me postré ante YHVH, y bendije a YHVH, Dios de mi señor Abraham, que me había conducido por camino recto a fin de tomar a la hija del hermano de mi señor para su hijo. 49 Ahora, pues, si está en vosotros que hagáis misericordia y verdad con mi señor, declarádmelo, y si no, declarádmelo, y me encaminaré a derecha o a izquierda. 50 Y respondiendo Labán y Betuel, dijeron: De parte de YHVH ha salido el asunto. No podemos decirte ni mal ni bien. 51 Ahí está Rebeca delante de ti, tómala y vete, y sea la mujer del hijo de tu señor, como lo tiene ordenado YHVH. 52 Cuando el siervo de Abraham oyó sus palabras, se postró en tierra ante YHVH. 53 Después sacó el siervo alhajas de plata y objetos de oro, y vestidos, y se los dio a Rebeca. También dio valiosos regalos a su hermano y a su madre. 54 Después comieron y bebieron, él y los que lo acompañaban, y pasaron la noche. Levantándose de mañana, dijo: Enviadme a mi señor. 55 A lo cual dijo el hermano de ella y su madre: Permanezca la doncella con nosotros algunos días, a lo menos diez, y después se irá. 56 Pero él les dijo: No me retraséis, pues YHVH ha hecho prosperar mi camino. Enviadme y podré ir a mi señor. 57 Y dijeron ellos: Llamemos a la doncella y preguntémosle de su propia boca. 58 Llamaron a Rebeca y le dijeron: ¿Irás tú con este hombre? Ella respondió: Iré. 59 Entonces despidieron a su hermana Rebeca, a su nodriza, y al siervo de Abraham y a sus hombres. 60 Y bendijeron a Rebeca y le dijeron: ¡Hermana nuestra, sé madre de miles de millares, y que tus descendientes posean la puerta de sus enemigos! 61 Y se levantó Rebeca con sus doncellas, montaron sobre los camellos y siguieron al hombre. Y el siervo tomó a Rebeca y se fue. 62 Mientras tanto, Isaac regresaba de una ida al pozo de Lajai-Roi, pues él habitaba en la región del Neguev. 63 E Isaac había salido a meditar al campo, al atardecer. Y alzando sus ojos, miró y he aquí unos camellos que venían. 64 Rebeca alzó sus ojos, vio a Isaac, y dejándose caer de lo alto del camello, 65 dijo al siervo: ¿Quién es ese varón que viene por el campo a nuestro encuentro? El siervo dijo: Es mi señor. Entonces ella tomó el velo y se cubrió. 66 Y el siervo le contó a Isaac todas las cosas que había hecho. 67 E Isaac la introdujo en la tienda de su madre Sara y tomó a Rebeca por mujer, y la amó. E Isaac fue consolado después de lo de su madre.

1 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: 3 And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 4 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. 5 And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? 6 And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. 7 The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father' house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. 8 And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again. 9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter. 10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. 11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water . 12 And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: 14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master. 15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham' brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. 16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. 18 And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. 19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. 20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water , and drew for all his camels. 21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. 22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; 23 And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father' house for us to lodge in? 24 And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. 25 She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. 26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD. 27 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master' brethren. 28 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother' house these things. 29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. 30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister' hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. 31 And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. 32 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men' feet that were with him. 33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on. 34 And he said, I am Abraham' servant. 35 And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses. 36 And Sarah my master' wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. 37 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell: 38 But thou shalt go unto my father' house, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son. 39 And I said unto my master, Peradventure the woman will not follow me. 40 And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father' house: 41 Then shalt thou be clear from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; and if they give not thee one , thou shalt be clear from my oath. 42 And I came this day unto the well, and said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, if now thou do prosper my way which I go: 43 Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water , and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink; 44 And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master' son. 45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water : and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee. 46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder , and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also. 47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor' son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. 48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master' brother' daughter unto his son. 49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her , and go, and let her be thy master' son' wife, as the LORD hath spoken. 52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham' servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth. 53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. 54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. 55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go. 56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. 57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth. 58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. 59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham' servant, and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. 61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. 62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah' tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother' death .
