1Fiel es la palabra: Si alguno anhela obispado, buena obra desea.2Es necesario, pues, que el obispo sea irreprochable, marido de una sola mujer, sobrio, prudente, decoroso, hospitalario, apto para enseñar,3no adicto al vino, ni pendenciero, sino amable, apacible, no avaro,4que cuide bien su propia casa, que tenga a sus hijos en obediencia con toda dignidad5(pues si alguno no tiene cuidado de su propia casa, ¿cómo acogerá a la iglesia de Dios?);6no un neófito, no sea que, lleno de orgullo, caiga en acusación del diablo;7debiendo tener también buen testimonio de los de afuera, para que no caiga en descrédito o en trampa del diablo.
Para los diáconos
8Asimismo los diáconos: serios, sin doblez de lengua, no adictos a mucho vino, ni ambiciosos de bienes materiales;9que mantengan el misterio de la fe con limpia conciencia.10Éstos también sean probados primero, y entonces sirvan como diáconos, siendo irreprochables.11De igual manera las mujeres sean serias, no calumniadoras, sobrias, fieles en todo.12Los diáconos sean maridos de una sola mujer, que cuiden bien a los hijos y sus propias casas.13Porque los que sirvieron bien como diáconos se ganan una buena posición y mucha confianza en la fe que es en Jesús el Mesías.14Esto te escribo, aunque espero ir en breve,15pero, si me retraso, para que sepas cómo hay que comportarse en la casa de Dios, que es la iglesia del Dios vivo, columna y baluarte de la verdad.
El gran misterio
16E indiscutiblemente, grande es el misterio de la piedad: Él fue manifestado en carne, Justificado en el Espíritu, Visto por ángeles, Proclamado entre gentiles, Creído en el mundo, Recibido arriba en gloria.
