1Entretanto, los filisteos combatían contra Israel, y los israelitas huyeron de delante de los filisteos, y cayeron muertos en el monte Gilboa.2Y los filisteos siguieron de cerca tras Saúl y sus hijos; y mataron los filisteos a Jonatán, a Abinadab y a Malquisúa, hijos de Saúl.3Y arreció la batalla contra Saúl, y lo alcanzaron los hombres que tiran con el arco, y fue herido gravemente por los arqueros.4Entonces Saúl dijo a su escudero: ¡Saca tu espada y traspásame con ella!, no sea que vengan estos incircuncisos y me traspasen, y hagan escarnio de mí. Pero su escudero no quiso, pues tenía gran temor. Entonces Saúl tomó la espada y se echó sobre ella.5Viendo que Saúl moría, su escudero también se echó sobre su propia espada para morir con él.6Aquel día, pues, murió Saúl con tres de sus hijos, su escudero, y todos sus hombres juntamente con él.7Y cuando los hombres de Israel que estaban a lo largo del valle, al otro lado del Jordán, vieron que los de Israel habían huido y que Saúl y sus hijos habían muerto, abandonaron las ciudades y huyeron. Entonces fueron los filisteos y habitaron en ellas.8Al día siguiente aconteció que los filisteos fueron a despojar a los muertos, y hallaron a Saúl y a sus tres hijos tendidos en el monte Gilboa.9Y le cortaron su cabeza y lo despojaron de sus armas, y enviaron a proclamar la noticia por toda la tierra de los filisteos, en el templo de sus ídolos y entre el pueblo.10Y colgaron sus armas en el templo de Astarot, y enclavaron su cadáver en el muro de Bet-sán.11Cuando los habitantes de Jabes Galaad oyeron lo que los filisteos habían hecho a Saúl,12se levantaron todos los hombres de valor y anduvieron toda aquella noche, y bajaron el cadáver de Saúl y los cadáveres de sus hijos del muro de Bet-sán, y fueron a Jabes y los quemaron allí.13Luego tomaron sus huesos y los sepultaron debajo del tamarisco en Jabes, y ayunaron siete días.

1Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.2And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul' sons.3And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.4Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.5And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.6So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.7And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.8And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.9And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.10And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.11And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul;12All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.13And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
