1Après la mort d’Ehoud, les Israélites recommencèrent à faire ce que l’Eternel considère comme mal.2Alors l’Eternel les livra au pouvoir de Yabîn[1], un roi cananéen qui régnait sur la ville de Hatsor[2]. Le chef de son armée s’appelait Sisera et demeurait à Harosheth-Goyim. (Jos 11:1; Jos 11:13; Jos 12:19; Jos 19:36)3Yabîn possédait neuf cents chars bardés de fer et il opprima durement les Israélites pendant vingt ans. Alors ceux-ci implorèrent l’Eternel.4A cette époque, Débora, une prophétesse, femme de Lappidoth, administrait la justice en Israël.5Elle siégeait sous le palmier qui, depuis lors, porte son nom, entre Rama et Béthel, dans la région montagneuse d’Ephraïm. Les Israélites se rendaient auprès d’elle pour régler leurs litiges.6Un jour, elle envoya chercher Baraq[3], fils d’Abinoam, de Qédesh[4] en Nephtali, et lui dit: Voici ce que t’ordonne l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël: « Va recruter dix mille hommes dans les tribus de Nephtali et de Zabulon et conduis-les sur le mont Thabor. (Jos 12:22; Jos 19:37; Jos 21:32; He 11:32)7Je mènerai au torrent de Qishôn Sisera, le chef de l’armée de Yabîn, avec ses chars et ses troupes, et je te donnerai la victoire sur lui. »8Baraq répondit à Débora: Si tu m’accompagnes, j’irai; mais si tu ne viens pas avec moi, je n’irai pas.9– Soit, lui répondit-elle, j’irai avec toi; mais sache que ce n’est pas à toi que reviendra l’honneur de l’expédition que tu vas entreprendre, car c’est entre les mains d’une femme que l’Eternel livrera Sisera. Débora se mit donc en route pour se rendre avec Baraq à Qédesh.10Celui-ci y convoqua les tribus de Zabulon et de Nephtali. Dix mille hommes le suivirent et Débora partit avec lui.11A la même époque, Héber le Qénien s’était séparé des autres Qéniens, descendants de Hobab[5], le beau-frère de Moïse, et était venu dresser sa tente près de Qédesh, à côté du chêne de Tsaannaïm[6]. (Ex 3:1; Nb 10:29; Jg 1:16)12Sisera fut informé que Baraq, fils d’Abinoam, était monté sur le mont Thabor.13Il mobilisa toutes ses troupes et rassembla les neuf cents chars bardés de fer. Il achemina toute l’armée de Harosheth-Goyim vers le torrent du Qishôn.14Alors Débora dit à Baraq: En avant! C’est aujourd’hui que l’Eternel te donnera la victoire sur Sisera. Il marche lui-même devant toi. Baraq descendit du mont Thabor à la tête de ses dix mille hommes.15Alors l’Eternel mit en déroute Sisera, ses chars et toutes ses troupes, par l’épée devant Baraq. Sisera lui-même abandonna son char et s’enfuit à pied.16Mais Baraq poursuivit les chars et l’armée jusqu’à Harosheth-Goyim, et toutes les troupes de Sisera furent massacrées. Pas un homme n’échappa.17Sisera s’enfuit à pied jusqu’à la tente de Yaël, la femme de Héber, le Qénien, car la paix avait été conclue entre Yabîn roi de Hatsor et la famille de Héber.18Yaël sortit à la rencontre de Sisera et lui dit: Entre, mon seigneur, retire-toi chez moi. Tu n’as rien à craindre ici. Il la suivit donc dans sa tente, et elle le recouvrit d’une couverture.19– Donne-moi, s’il te plaît, un peu d’eau à boire, lui dit-il, car j’ai soif. Elle ouvrit l’outre de lait, le fit boire et le recouvrit.20Il ajouta: Va te poster à l’entrée de la tente, et si l’on vient te demander s’il y a quelqu’un ici, tu répondras: « Personne! »21Puis il s’endormit profondément car il était épuisé. Alors Yaël saisit un piquet de la tente, prit le marteau, se glissa doucement près de lui, et lui enfonça le piquet dans la tempe, et le piquet lui transperça la tête et se planta dans le sol, si bien qu’il mourut.22Sur ces entrefaites survint Baraq poursuivant Sisera. Yaël sortit au-devant de lui et lui dit: Viens, je te montrerai l’homme que tu cherches. Il la suivit et vit Sisera mort, étendu sur le sol, la tempe transpercée du piquet.23C’est ainsi que ce jour-là Dieu humilia Yabîn, le roi cananéen, devant les Israélites.24Leur pression contre lui devint de plus en plus forte et ils finirent par l’éliminer.

1And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord after Ehud died. (Jg 2:19)2And the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in Harosheth-hagoyim. (Jos 11:1; Jos 11:10; Jg 2:14; Jg 4:13; Jg 4:16; 1S 12:9; Ps 83:9)3Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, for he had 900 chariots of iron and he oppressed the people of Israel cruelly for twenty years. (Jg 1:19; Jg 3:9; Jg 4:13)4Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time.5She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the people of Israel came up to her for judgment. (Jg 4:3)14And Deborah said to Barak, “Up! For this is the day in which the Lord has given Sisera into your hand. Does not the Lord go out before you?” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with 10,000 men following him. And Sisera got down from his chariot and fled away on foot. (Jos 10:10; Jg 4:23; Ps 83:9)16And Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Harosheth-hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not a man was left.17But Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.18And Jael came out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord; turn aside to me; do not be afraid.” So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug.19And he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him. (Jg 5:25)20And he said to her, “Stand at the opening of the tent, and if any man comes and asks you, ‘Is anyone here?’ say, ‘No.’”21But Jael the wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand. Then she went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple until it went down into the ground while he was lying fast asleep from weariness. So he died.22And behold, as Barak was pursuing Sisera, Jael went out to meet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” So he went in to her tent, and there lay Sisera dead, with the tent peg in his temple.23So on that day God subdued Jabin the king of Canaan before the people of Israel. (Jg 4:15)24And the hand of the people of Israel pressed harder and harder against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.
