L’origine des divers peuples

1 Voici la généalogie des fils de Noé: Sem, Cham et Japhet. Ils eurent des enfants après le déluge. 2 Fils de Japhet: Gomer^[1], Magog, Madaï, Yavân, Toubal, Méshek et Tiras. (Ez 38:2) 3 Fils de Gomer: Ashkenaz^[2], Riphat et Togarma. 4 Fils de Yavân: Elisha, Tarsis, Kittim et Dodanim^[3]. (1Ch 1:7) 5 Ce sont leurs descendants qui ont peuplé les îles et les régions côtières. Ils se sont répartis par pays selon la langue et par familles dans chaque peuple. 6 Les fils de Cham furent: Koush^[4], Mitsraïm, Pouth et Canaan. 7 Les fils de Koush: Seba, Havila, Sabta, Raema et Sabteka. Les fils de Raema: Sheba et Dedân^[5]. 8 Koush fut le père^[6] de Nimrod qui se mit à exercer un grand pouvoir sur la terre. 9 C’était un valeureux chasseur devant l’Eternel. De là vient l’expression: « valeureux chasseur devant l’Eternel comme Nimrod ». 10 Les capitales de son royaume furent Babel, Erek, Akkad et Kalné^[7] au pays de Shinéar^[8]. 11 De ce pays-là, il passa en Assyrie et bâtit Ninive, Rehoboth-Ir, Kalah, 12 et Résen, la plus grande cité entre Ninive et Kalah. 13 Mitsraïm fut l’ancêtre des Loudim, des Anamim, des Lehabim, des Naphtouim^[9], 14 des Patrousim, des Kaslouhim – dont sont issus les Philistins^[10] – et des Crétois. (Jr 47:4; Am 9:7) 15 Canaan^[11] eut pour fils Sidon, son aîné, et Heth. (Gn 23:3) 16 De lui descendent les Yebousiens, les Amoréens, les Guirgasiens, 17 les Héviens, les Arqiens et les Siniens, 18 les Arvadiens, les Tsemariens et les Hamathiens. Ensuite les différentes tribus des Cananéens se dispersèrent. 19 Le territoire des Cananéens s’étendait de Sidon, en direction de Guérar, jusqu’à Gaza et en direction de Sodome, de Gomorrhe, d’Adma et de Tseboïm jusqu’à Lésha. 20 Tels sont les descendants de Cham selon leurs familles et leurs langues, dans leurs divers pays et leurs peuples. 21 Sem aussi, le frère aîné de Japhet, eut une descendance. Il fut l’ancêtre d’Héber et de ses descendants. 22 Les descendants de Sem furent: Elam, Assour, Arpakshad, Loud et Aram^[12]. (Gn 11:10) 23 Les descendants d’Aram furent: Outs, Houl, Guéter et Mash^[13]. (1Ch 1:17) 24 Arpakshad eut pour fils Shélah, et Shélah^[14] eut pour fils Héber. (Gn 11:12) 25 Héber eut deux fils: l’un s’appelait Péleg (Partage), parce que de son temps la terre fut partagée, et son frère s’appelait Yoqtân. 26 Yoqtân eut pour fils Almodad, Shéleph, Hatsarmaveth, Yérah, 27 Hadoram, Ouzal, Diqla, 28 Obal, Abimaël, Saba, 29 Ophir, Havila et Yobab. Tous ceux-là étaient des descendants de Yoqtân. 30 Ils habitaient la contrée s’étendant de Mésha jusque du côté de Sephar, la montagne d’orient. 31 Tels sont les descendants de Sem selon leurs familles et leurs langues, dans leurs divers pays, selon leurs peuples. 32 Telles sont les familles issues des fils de Noé selon leurs lignées et d’après leur appartenance nationale. C’est d’eux que sont issus tous les peuples qui se sont répandus sur la terre après le déluge.

1 These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. (1Ch 1:5; Ez 38:1) 3 The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. (Nb 24:24; Ps 72:10; Is 23:1; Is 23:12; Ez 38:13; Da 11:30)

5 From these the coastland peoples spread in their lands, each with his own language, by their clans, in their nations. (Is 11:11; Jr 2:10; Jr 25:22; Ez 27:6; So 2:11)

6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. (1Ch 1:8) 7 The sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. 8 Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man.^[1] 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord. Therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. (Gn 11:2; Gn 11:9) 11 From that land he went into Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, and 12 Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. 13 Egypt fathered Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, (1Ch 1:11) 14 Pathrusim, Casluhim (from whom^[2] the Philistines came), and Caphtorim. (Dt 2:23; Jr 47:4; Am 9:7) 15 Canaan fathered Sidon his firstborn and Heth, (Gn 15:18) 16 and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, 17 the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, 18 the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the clans of the Canaanites dispersed. 19 And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon in the direction of Gerar as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations. 21 To Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. (1Ch 1:17) 23 The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arpachshad fathered Shelah; and Shelah fathered Eber. (Gn 11:12; Lc 3:35) 25 To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg,^[3] for in his days the earth was divided, and his brother’s name was Joktan. (1Ch 1:19) 26 Joktan fathered Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. (1R 9:28; 1R 10:11) 30 The territory in which they lived extended from Mesha in the direction of Sephar to the hill country of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, by their clans, their languages, their lands, and their nations. 32 These are the clans of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, in their nations, and from these the nations spread abroad on the earth after the flood.
