1Le roi Salomon commença la construction du Temple en l’honneur de l’Eternel quatre cent quatre-vingts ans[1] après la sortie des Israélites d’Egypte, soit la quatrième année de son règne sur Israël[2], au deuxième mois, le mois de Ziv[3]. (2Ch 3:1)2L’édifice que le roi Salomon bâtit à l’Eternel avait trente mètres de long, dix mètres de large et quinze mètres de haut.3Sur la façade avant du Temple, devant la grande salle, il y avait un portique de dix mètres de largeur, comme le Temple, et de cinq mètres de profondeur.4Dans les murs du Temple, on pratiqua des fenêtres à claire-voie grillagées.5Tout autour du Temple, on adossa aux murs de la grande salle et de la salle du fond un bâtiment comprenant des salles annexes.6L’étage inférieur de cette annexe avait deux mètres cinquante de large, l’étage intermédiaire, trois mètres, et l’étage supérieur, trois mètres cinquante. En effet, le mur extérieur du Temple devenait moins épais vers le haut, de sorte que la charpente ne venait pas entamer les murs mêmes du Temple.7Lorsqu’on édifia le Temple, on n’employa que des pierres déjà entièrement taillées, de sorte que, pendant la construction, on n’entendit aucun bruit de marteau, de pic ou d’autre instrument de fer dans le Temple.8On accédait aux chambres annexes de l’étage inférieur[4] par une porte située sur le côté sud du Temple; de là on montait aux étages supérieurs par des escaliers en colimaçon.9Après avoir achevé de bâtir le Temple, Salomon le fit couvrir d’un plafond soutenu par une armature de poutres de cèdre.10Il construisit les étages adossés à tout le bâtiment en donnant à chacun d’eux deux mètres cinquante de hauteur. Ils étaient reliés au Temple par des poutres de cèdre.11L’Eternel s’adressa à Salomon et lui dit: Tu es en train de bâtir ce temple.12Si tu te conduis selon mes ordonnances, si tu obéis à mes lois, si tu suis fidèlement tous mes commandements pour vivre en conformité avec eux, je réaliserai pour toi la promesse que j’ai faite à ton père David[5]. (2S 7:13)13Je viendrai habiter au milieu des Israélites et je n’abandonnerai pas mon peuple Israël.
L’aménagement intérieur du Temple
14Après avoir achevé le gros œuvre du Temple, Salomon15fit lambrisser l’intérieur des murs, de bas en haut, avec des boiseries de cèdre et revêtir le sol du Temple d’un plancher de cyprès.16Il fit aussi recouvrir de boiseries de cèdre depuis le sol jusqu’au plafond les murs intérieurs de l’arrière-corps de l’édifice, bâti sur dix mètres de long. Puis il fit aménager l’intérieur de cette partie pour en faire le lieu très saint[6]. (Ex 26:33)17Le reste du Temple, la grande salle qui était devant, avait vingt mètres de long.18Les boiseries de cèdre qui revêtaient l’intérieur du sanctuaire étaient ornées de sculptures en formes de coloquintes et de fleurs entrouvertes. Tout était recouvert de boiseries de cèdre, on ne voyait aucune pierre.19Salomon fit arranger dans l’arrière-corps la pièce la plus importante du Temple pour y déposer le coffre de l’alliance de l’Eternel.20Cette pièce avait la forme d’un cube de dix mètres de côté[7]. Ses murs étaient plaqués d’or fin[8]. On lambrissa également un autel en cèdre. (Ex 26:1; Ap 21:10; Ap 21:18; Ap 21:21)21Salomon plaqua tout l’intérieur de l’édifice d’or fin. Devant l’entrée de la salle du fond, il fit tendre des chaînettes d’or.22Tout l’intérieur du Temple était donc plaqué d’or, de même que l’autel[9] placé devant l’entrée du lieu très saint[10]. (Ex 30:1; Ex 30:6; Ex 37:25; 1R 7:48; He 9:3)23On sculpta en bois d’olivier sauvage deux chérubins de cinq mètres de haut pour les placer dans le lieu très saint[11]. (Ex 25:18)24Chacune de leurs ailes avait deux mètres cinquante de long, il y avait donc cinq mètres de l’extrémité d’une aile à celle de l’autre.25-26Les deux chérubins avaient la même dimension et la même forme.27Salomon fit placer les chérubins au milieu de la pièce la plus intérieure du Temple. De leurs ailes extérieures déployées, ils touchaient les deux parois opposées alors que leurs deux autres ailes se touchaient au milieu de la pièce.28Salomon fit aussi plaquer d’or ces chérubins.29Il fit sculpter en relief sur tous les murs intérieurs du Temple, dans les deux pièces, des chérubins, des palmes et des fleurs entrouvertes.30Il fit recouvrir d’or le plancher des deux pièces.31Pour fermer le lieu très saint, il fit faire une porte à deux battants en bois d’olivier sauvage. Le linteau et les montants prenaient un cinquième du mur.32Les deux battants étaient de bois d’olivier sauvage, ils étaient ornés de sculptures plaquées d’or représentant des chérubins, des palmes et des fleurs entrouvertes. On étendit l’or en pellicules sur les chérubins et sur les palmes.33-34Pour fermer l’entrée de la grande salle du Temple, le roi fit également faire une porte à deux battants en bois de cyprès avec un encadrement de bois d’olivier sauvage prenant le quart de la dimension du mur. Chacun des deux battants était muni de deux gonds[12].35Ils étaient décorés de sculptures plaquées d’or représentant des chérubins, des palmes et des fleurs entrouvertes, le placage d’or suivait exactement les contours des sculptures.36Puis Salomon fit entourer la cour intérieure d’un mur de trois rangées de pierres de taille superposées et d’une rangée de poutres de cèdre.37Les fondations du temple de l’Eternel furent posées la quatrième année, au mois de Ziv.38La onzième année, au mois de Boul[13] – le huitième mois – le Temple fut achevé dans tous ses détails conformément à tout ce qui était prévu. Salomon avait donc mis sept ans pour le construire.

Solomon Builds the Temple
1In the four hundred and eightieth year after the people of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, he began to build the house of the Lord. (2Ch 3:1; Ac 7:47)2The house that King Solomon built for the Lord was sixty cubits[1] long, twenty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high. (2Ch 3:3)3The vestibule in front of the nave of the house was twenty cubits long, equal to the width of the house, and ten cubits deep in front of the house.4And he made for the house windows with recessed frames.[2] (Ez 40:16; Ez 41:16; Ez 41:26)5He also built a structure[3] against the wall of the house, running around the walls of the house, both the nave and the inner sanctuary. And he made side chambers all around. He also overlaid[7] an altar of cedar.21And Solomon overlaid the inside of the house with pure gold, and he drew chains of gold across, in front of the inner sanctuary, and overlaid it with gold.22And he overlaid the whole house with gold, until all the house was finished. (Ex 37:7; 2Ch 3:10)24Five cubits was the length of one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the length of the other wing of the cherub; it was ten cubits from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other.25The other cherub also measured ten cubits; both cherubim had the same measure and the same form.26The height of one cherub was ten cubits, and so was that of the other cherub.27He put the cherubim in the innermost part of the house. And the wings of the cherubim were spread out so that a wing of one touched the one wall, and a wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; their other wings touched each other in the middle of the house. (Ex 25:20; Ex 37:9; 1R 8:7; 2Ch 5:8)28And he overlaid the cherubim with gold.29Around all the walls of the house he carved engraved figures of cherubim and palm trees and open flowers, in the inner and outer rooms.30The floor of the house he overlaid with gold in the inner and outer rooms.31For the entrance to the inner sanctuary he made doors of olivewood; the lintel and the doorposts were five-sided.[8]32He covered the two doors of olivewood with carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers. He overlaid them with gold and spread gold on the cherubim and on the palm trees.33So also he made for the entrance to the nave doorposts of olivewood, in the form of a square,34and two doors of cypress wood. The two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the other door were folding. (Ez 41:24)35On them he carved cherubim and palm trees and open flowers, and he overlaid them with gold evenly applied on the carved work.36He built the inner court with three courses of cut stone and one course of cedar beams. (1R 7:12)37In the fourth year the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid, in the month of Ziv. (1R 6:1)38And in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul, which is the eighth month, the house was finished in all its parts, and according to all its specifications. He was seven years in building it.
