1The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt.2In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron.3The Israelites said to them, ‘If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat round pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.’4Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.5On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.’6So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, ‘In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt,7and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?’8Moses also said, ‘You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.’9Then Moses told Aaron, ‘Say to the entire Israelite community, “Come before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.” ’10While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked towards the desert, and there was the glory of the Lord appearing in the cloud.11The Lord said to Moses,12‘I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, “At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.” ’13That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.14When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor.15When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, ‘What is it?’ For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, ‘It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.16This is what the Lord has commanded: “Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer[1] for each person you have in your tent.” ’17The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little.18And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.19Then Moses said to them, ‘No-one is to keep any of it until morning.’20However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.21Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away.22On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much – two omers[2] for each person – and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses.23He said to them, ‘This is what the Lord commanded: “Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.” ’24So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it.25‘Eat it today,’ Moses said, ‘because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today.26Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.’27Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none.28Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘How long will you[3] refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?29Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no-one is to go out.’30So the people rested on the seventh day.31The people of Israel called the bread manna.[4] It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.32Moses said, ‘This is what the Lord has commanded: “Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.” ’33So Moses said to Aaron, ‘Take a jar and put an omer of manna in it. Then place it before the Lord to be kept for the generations to come.’34As the Lord commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law, that it might be preserved.35The Israelites ate manna for forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.36(An omer is one-tenth of an ephah.)

Bread from Heaven
1They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. (Nu 33:10)2And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, (Ex 15:24; Ex 17:3; 1Co 10:10)3and the people of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” (Nu 11:4; Nu 20:3)4Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. (Ex 15:25; Ne 9:15; Ps 78:24; Ps 105:40; Joh 6:31; 1Co 10:3)5On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” (Ex 16:22)6So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, (Ex 6:7; Ex 16:12; Nu 16:28)7and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against the Lord. For what are we, that you grumble against us?” (Ex 13:21; Ex 14:24; Ex 40:34; Nu 16:11; Nu 16:19; 1Ki 8:10)8And Moses said, “When the Lord gives you in the evening meat to eat and in the morning bread to the full, because the Lord has heard your grumbling that you grumble against him—what are we? Your grumbling is not against us but against the Lord.” (Ex 16:7; Nu 14:27; 1Sa 8:7; Lu 10:16; Ro 13:2)9Then Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, ‘Come near before the Lord, for he has heard your grumbling.’” (Ex 4:14; Nu 16:16)10And as soon as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the people of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. (Ex 16:7)11And the Lord said to Moses,12“I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’” (Ex 16:6; Ex 16:7; Ex 16:8)13In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp. (Nu 11:9; Nu 11:31; Ps 78:27; Ps 105:40)14And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground.15When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?”[1] For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat. (Ex 16:4; Ex 16:31; De 8:3)16This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can eat. You shall each take an omer,[2] according to the number of the persons that each of you has in his tent.’” (Ex 16:36)17And the people of Israel did so. They gathered, some more, some less.18But when they measured it with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat. (2Co 8:15)19And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.”20But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. (Ex 16:24)21Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.22On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each. And when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, (Ex 16:5)23he said to them, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay aside to be kept till the morning.’” (Ge 2:3; Ex 20:8; Ex 31:14; Ex 35:2; Le 23:3)24So they laid it aside till the morning, as Moses commanded them, and it did not stink, and there were no worms in it. (Ex 16:20)25Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. (Ex 16:23)26Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none.”27On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they found none.28And the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? (Ps 78:10; Eze 20:13)29See! The Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.”30So the people rested on the seventh day. (Lu 23:56)31Now the house of Israel called its name manna. It was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. (Ex 16:15; Nu 11:7)32Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’”33And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord to be kept throughout your generations.” (Heb 9:4)34As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the testimony to be kept. (Ex 25:16; Ex 25:21; Ex 26:33; Ex 27:21; Ex 30:6; Ex 30:26; Ex 30:36; Ex 40:21)35The people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till they came to the border of the land of Canaan. (De 8:2; Jos 5:12; Ne 9:20)36(An omer is the tenth part of an ephah.)[3] (Le 5:11; Le 6:20)
