1The Sabbath day was now over. It was dawn on the first day of the week. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.2There was a powerful earthquake. An angel of the Lord came down from heaven. The angel went to the tomb. He rolled back the stone and sat on it.3His body shone like lightning. His clothes were as white as snow.4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.5The angel said to the women, ‘Don’t be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.6He is not here! He has risen, just as he said he would! Come and see the place where he was lying.7Go quickly! Tell his disciples, “He has risen from the dead. He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.” Now I have told you.’8So the women hurried away from the tomb. They were afraid, but they were filled with joy. They ran to tell the disciples.9Suddenly Jesus met them. ‘Greetings!’ he said. They came to him, took hold of his feet and worshipped him.10Then Jesus said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee. There they will see me.’
The guards report to the chief priests
11While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city. They reported to the chief priests all that had happened.12When the chief priests met with the elders, they came up with a plan. They gave the soldiers a large amount of money.13They told the soldiers, ‘We want you to say, “His disciples came during the night. They stole his body while we were sleeping.”14If the governor hears this report, we will pay him off. That will keep you out of trouble.’15So the soldiers took the money and did as they were told. This story has spread all around among the Jews to this day.
Jesus’ final orders to his disciples
16Then the 11 disciples went to Galilee. They went to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.17When they saw him, they worshipped him. But some still had their doubts.18Then Jesus came to them. He said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.19So you must go and make disciples of all nations. Baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.20Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end.’
Matthew 28
English Standard Version
The Resurrection
1Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. (Mt 27:56; Mt 27:61; Mr 16:1; Lu 24:1; Joh 20:1)2And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. (Joh 20:12)3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. (Da 7:9; Da 10:6; Mr 9:3; Joh 20:12; Ac 1:10)4And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. (Re 1:17)5But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.6He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he[1] lay. (Mt 27:63)7Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” (Mt 26:32; Mt 28:10; Mt 28:16)8So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. (Ps 2:11)9And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. (2Ki 4:27; Mt 28:17; Mr 16:9; Lu 24:52; Joh 20:14)10Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” (Ps 22:22; Joh 20:17; Joh 20:18; Ro 8:29; Heb 2:11; Heb 2:17)
The Report of the Guard
11While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. (Mt 27:65)12And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers13and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ (Mt 27:64)14And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” (Mt 27:2; Ac 12:20)15So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day. (Mt 27:8)
