Ezekiel 48

New International Reader’s Version



1 ‘Here are the tribes. They are listed by their names. ‘Dan will receive one share of land. It will be at the northern border of Israel. The border will follow the Hethlon road to Lebo Hamath. Hazar Enan will be part of the border. So will the northern border of Damascus next to Hamath. Dan’s northern border will run from east to west. 2 Asher will receive one share. It will border the territory of Dan from east to west. 3 Naphtali will receive one share. It will border the territory of Asher from east to west. 4 Manasseh will receive one share. It will border the territory of Naphtali from east to west. 5 Ephraim will receive one share. It will border the territory of Manasseh from east to west. 6 Reuben will receive one share. It will border the territory of Ephraim from east to west. 7 Judah will receive one share. It will border the territory of Reuben from east to west. 8 ‘You must give one share as a special gift to me. It will border the territory of Judah from east to west. It will be 10 miles wide. It will be as long as the border of each of the territories of the tribes. Its border will run from east to west. The temple will be in the centre of that strip of land. 9 ‘Give that special share of land to me. It will be 10 miles long and 4 miles wide. 10 It will be the sacred share of land for the priests. It will be 10 miles long on the north side. It will be 4 miles wide on the west side. It will be 4 miles wide on the east side. And it will be 10 miles long on the south side. My temple will be in the centre of it. 11 This share of land will be for the priests who are set apart to me. They will come from the family line of Zadok. The members of that family served me faithfully. They did not go astray as the Levites and other Israelites did. 12 Their share of land will be a special gift to them. It will be part of the sacred share of the land. It will be very holy. Its border will run along the territory of the Levites. 13 ‘The Levites will receive a share. It will be next to the territory of the priests. The Levites’ share will be 10 miles long and 4 miles wide. 14 They must not sell or trade any of it. It is the best part of the land. It must not be handed over to anyone else. It is set apart to me. 15 ‘The area that remains is 2 miles wide. It is 10 miles long. It will not be holy. The people in Jerusalem can build houses there. They can use some of it as grasslands. The city will be in the centre of it. 16 Each of the four sides of the city will be 1.75 miles long. 17 Each of the four sides of the city’s grasslands will be 150 metres long. 18 What remains of the area will be 4 miles long on the east and west sides. Its border will run along the border of the sacred share. Its crops will supply food for the city workers. 19 They will farm the area. They will come from all the tribes of Israel. 20 The entire area will be a square. Each of its four sides will be 10 miles long. Set the sacred share apart as a special gift to me. Do the same thing with the property of the city. 21 ‘The area that remains on both sides will belong to the prince. So his land does not include the sacred share and the property of the city. The eastern part of his land will reach from the sacred share all the way to the eastern border. The western part will reach from the sacred share to the western border. The sacred share itself is 10 miles long on its east and west sides. Both of those areas will be right next to the borders of the two tribes on the north and south sides. They will belong to the prince. The sacred share will be in the centre of them. It will have the temple in it. 22 The property of the Levites will lie in the centre of the prince’s share. So will the property of the city. The prince’s land will lie between the borders of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. 23 ‘Here is the land for the rest of the tribes. ‘Benjamin will receive one share. It will reach from the eastern border to the western border. 24 Simeon will receive one share. It will border the territory of Benjamin from east to west. 25 Issachar will receive one share. It will border the territory of Simeon from east to west. 26 Zebulun will receive one share. It will border the territory of Issachar from east to west. 27 Gad will receive one share. It will border the territory of Zebulun from east to west. 28 The southern border of Gad will run south from Tamar to the waters of Meribah Kadesh. It will continue along the Wadi of Egypt. It will end at the Mediterranean Sea. 29 ‘This is the land you must divide among the tribes of Israel. And these will be the shares they will receive,’ announces the LORD and King. 



30 ‘Here is a list of the gates of the city. ‘Start with its north side. It will be 1.75 miles long. 31 The city gates will be named after the tribes of Israel. The north side will have three gates. They will be the gates of Reuben, Judah and Levi. 32 The east side will be 1.75 miles long. It will have three gates. They will be the gates of Joseph, Benjamin and Dan. 33 The south side will be 1.75 miles long. It will have three gates. They will be the gates of Simeon, Issachar and Zebulun. 34 The west side will be 1.75 miles long. It will have three gates. They will be the gates of Gad, Asher and Naphtali. 35 ‘The city will be 6.5 miles round. ‘From that time on, its name will be “The LORD Is There.” ’

1 “These are the names of the tribes: Beginning at the northern extreme, beside the way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, as far as Hazar-enan (which is on the northern border of Damascus over against Hamath), and extending[1] from the east side to the west,[2] Dan, one portion. (Nu 2:25; 1Ki 8:65; Eze 47:15; Eze 47:16; Eze 47:17; Eze 47:18; Eze 47:20) 2 Adjoining the territory of Dan, from the east side to the west, Asher, one portion. (Eze 48:1) 3 Adjoining the territory of Asher, from the east side to the west, Naphtali, one portion. (Eze 48:1) 4 Adjoining the territory of Naphtali, from the east side to the west, Manasseh, one portion. 5 Adjoining the territory of Manasseh, from the east side to the west, Ephraim, one portion. 6 Adjoining the territory of Ephraim, from the east side to the west, Reuben, one portion. 7 Adjoining the territory of Reuben, from the east side to the west, Judah, one portion. 8 “Adjoining the territory of Judah, from the east side to the west, shall be the portion which you shall set apart, 25,000 cubits[3] in breadth, and in length equal to one of the tribal portions, from the east side to the west, with the sanctuary in the midst of it. (Eze 45:1; Eze 48:21) 9 The portion that you shall set apart for the Lord shall be 25,000 cubits in length, and 20,000[4] in breadth. 10 These shall be the allotments of the holy portion: the priests shall have an allotment measuring 25,000 cubits on the northern side, 10,000 cubits in breadth on the western side, 10,000 in breadth on the eastern side, and 25,000 in length on the southern side, with the sanctuary of the Lord in the midst of it. (Eze 45:4) 11 This shall be for the consecrated priests, the sons of Zadok, who kept my charge, who did not go astray when the people of Israel went astray, as the Levites did. (Eze 40:46; Eze 44:10; Eze 44:15) 12 And it shall belong to them as a special portion from the holy portion of the land, a most holy place, adjoining the territory of the Levites. 13 And alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites shall have an allotment 25,000 cubits in length and 10,000 in breadth. The whole length shall be 25,000 cubits and the breadth 20,000.[5] (Eze 45:5) 14 They shall not sell or exchange any of it. They shall not alienate this choice portion of the land, for it is holy to the Lord. (Le 27:10; Le 27:28; Le 27:33; Eze 44:30) 15 “The remainder, 5,000 cubits in breadth and 25,000 in length, shall be for common use for the city, for dwellings and for open country. In the midst of it shall be the city, (Eze 27:28; Eze 42:20; Eze 45:2; Eze 45:6) 16 and these shall be its measurements: the north side 4,500 cubits, the south side 4,500, the east side 4,500, and the west side 4,500. (Eze 48:20; Re 21:16) 17 And the city shall have open land: on the north 250 cubits, on the south 250, on the east 250, and on the west 250. 18 The remainder of the length alongside the holy portion shall be 10,000 cubits to the east, and 10,000 to the west, and it shall be alongside the holy portion. Its produce shall be food for the workers of the city. (Eze 45:6) 19 And the workers of the city, from all the tribes of Israel, shall till it. 20 The whole portion that you shall set apart shall be 25,000 cubits square, that is, the holy portion together with the property of the city. (Eze 40:47) 21 “What remains on both sides of the holy portion and of the property of the city shall belong to the prince. Extending from the 25,000 cubits of the holy portion to the east border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the west border, parallel to the tribal portions, it shall belong to the prince. The holy portion with the sanctuary of the temple shall be in its midst. (Eze 45:7; Eze 48:8; Eze 48:10) 22 It shall be separate from the property of the Levites and the property of the city, which are in the midst of that which belongs to the prince. The portion of the prince shall lie between the territory of Judah and the territory of Benjamin. 23 “As for the rest of the tribes: from the east side to the west, Benjamin, one portion. 24 Adjoining the territory of Benjamin, from the east side to the west, Simeon, one portion. 25 Adjoining the territory of Simeon, from the east side to the west, Issachar, one portion. 26 Adjoining the territory of Issachar, from the east side to the west, Zebulun, one portion. 27 Adjoining the territory of Zebulun, from the east side to the west, Gad, one portion. 28 And adjoining the territory of Gad to the south, the boundary shall run from Tamar to the waters of Meribah-kadesh, from there along the Brook of Egypt[6] to the Great Sea.[7] (Jos 15:12; Eze 47:10; Eze 47:19) 29 This is the land that you shall allot as an inheritance among the tribes of Israel, and these are their portions, declares the Lord God. (Eze 47:22) 



30 “These shall be the exits of the city: On the north side, which is to be 4,500 cubits by measure, (Nu 34:4; Nu 34:8; Nu 34:12; Jos 15:4; Jos 15:7; Jos 15:11; Eze 48:16) 31 three gates, the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah, and the gate of Levi, the gates of the city being named after the tribes of Israel. (De 33:6; Re 21:12) 32 On the east side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates, the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan. 33 On the south side, which is to be 4,500 cubits by measure, three gates, the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar, and the gate of Zebulun. 34 On the west side, which is to be 4,500 cubits, three gates,[8] the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher, and the gate of Naphtali. 35 The circumference of the city shall be 18,000 cubits. And the name of the city from that time on shall be, The Lord Is There.” (Isa 60:14; Jer 3:17; Jer 23:6; Jer 33:16; Eze 35:10; Joe 3:21; Zec 2:10; Re 21:3)
