1Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night:2And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only:3And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.4And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.5Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.6And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou.7And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time.8For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.9Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.10And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men.11Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.12So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.13Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.14And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.15Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.16Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.17Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by Enrogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.18Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man' house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court; whither they went down.19And the woman took and spread a covering over the well' mouth, and spread ground corn thereon; and the thing was not known.20And when Absalom' servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them , they returned to Jerusalem.21And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.22Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan.23And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.24Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.25And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man' son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab' mother.26So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead.27And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim,28Brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn , and beans, and lentiles, and parched pulse ,29And honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.

Hushai Saves David
1Moreover, Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Let me choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue David tonight.2I will come upon him while he is weary and discouraged and throw him into a panic, and all the people who are with him will flee. I will strike down only the king, (De 25:18; 2Sa 16:14; 1Ki 22:31)3and I will bring all the people back to you as a bride comes home to her husband. You seek the life of only one man,[1] and all the people will be at peace.”4And the advice seemed right in the eyes of Absalom and all the elders of Israel.5Then Absalom said, “Call Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear what he has to say.” (2Sa 16:16)6And when Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him, “Thus has Ahithophel spoken; shall we do as he says? If not, you speak.”7Then Hushai said to Absalom, “This time the counsel that Ahithophel has given is not good.”8Hushai said, “You know that your father and his men are mighty men, and that they are enraged,[2] like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people. (Pr 17:12; Ho 13:8)9Behold, even now he has hidden himself in one of the pits or in some other place. And as soon as some of the people fall[3] at the first attack, whoever hears it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’10Then even the valiant man, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will utterly melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and that those who are with him are valiant men. (Jos 2:11)11But my counsel is that all Israel be gathered to you, from Dan to Beersheba, as the sand by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person. (Ge 22:17; 2Sa 3:10)12So we shall come upon him in some place where he is to be found, and we shall light upon him as the dew falls on the ground, and of him and all the men with him not one will be left.13If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we shall drag it into the valley, until not even a pebble is to be found there.”14And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had ordained[4] to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring harm upon Absalom. (2Sa 15:31; 2Sa 15:34)15Then Hushai said to Zadok and Abiathar the priests, “Thus and so did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel, and thus and so have I counseled. (2Sa 15:35)16Now therefore send quickly and tell David, ‘Do not stay tonight at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over, lest the king and all the people who are with him be swallowed up.’” (2Sa 15:28; 2Sa 20:19)17Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were waiting at En-rogel. A female servant was to go and tell them, and they were to go and tell King David, for they were not to be seen entering the city. (Jos 15:7; Jos 18:16; 2Sa 15:27; 2Sa 15:36)18But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So both of them went away quickly and came to the house of a man at Bahurim, who had a well in his courtyard. And they went down into it. (2Sa 3:16)19And the woman took and spread a covering over the well’s mouth and scattered grain on it, and nothing was known of it. (Jos 2:6)20When Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they said, “Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman said to them, “They have gone over the brook[5] of water.” And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.21After they had gone, the men came up out of the well, and went and told King David. They said to David, “Arise, and go quickly over the water, for thus and so has Ahithophel counseled against you.” (2Sa 17:15)22Then David arose, and all the people who were with him, and they crossed the Jordan. By daybreak not one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.23When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to his own city. He set his house in order and hanged himself, and he died and was buried in the tomb of his father. (2Sa 15:12; 2Ki 20:1; Mt 27:5)24Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel. (Jos 13:26)25Now Absalom had set Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra the Ishmaelite,[6] who had married Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother. (2Sa 19:13; 2Sa 20:9; 2Sa 20:12; 1Ki 2:5; 1Ki 2:32; 1Ch 2:13; 1Ch 2:16)26And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead.27When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, and Machir the son of Ammiel from Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim, (2Sa 9:4; 2Sa 10:1; 2Sa 12:26; 2Sa 12:29; 2Sa 19:31; 1Ki 2:7; Ezr 2:61)28brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels, wheat, barley, flour, parched grain, beans and lentils,[7]29honey and curds and sheep and cheese from the herd, for David and the people with him to eat, for they said, “The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness.” (2Sa 15:23; 2Sa 16:2)
