1To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A Song. God shall arise, his enemies shall be scattered; and those who hate him shall flee before him! (Nu 10:35; Ps 89:10; Ps 92:9; Isa 33:3)2As smoke is driven away, so you shall drive them away; as wax melts before fire, so the wicked shall perish before God! (Ps 22:14; Ps 37:20; Ps 97:5; Mic 1:4)3But the righteous shall be glad; they shall exult before God; they shall be jubilant with joy! (Ps 32:11)4Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him! (Ps 18:10; Ps 66:4; Ps 68:33; Ps 89:8; Isa 40:3; Isa 62:10)5Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. (De 10:18; Ps 10:14)6God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. (1Sa 2:5; Ps 68:18; Ps 69:33; Ps 107:10; Ps 107:14; Ps 107:33; Ps 107:40; Ps 113:9; Ps 146:7; Ac 12:7; Ac 16:26)7O God, when you went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness, (Ex 13:21; Jud 4:14; Jud 5:4; Ps 78:40; Hab 3:13; Zec 14:3)8the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God,[1] the God of Israel. (Ex 19:18; Jud 5:4)9Rain in abundance, O God, you shed abroad; you restored your inheritance as it languished; (Ps 65:9)10your flock[2] found a dwelling in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy. (Ps 65:9; Ps 78:20)11The Lord gives the word; the women who announce the news are a great host: (Ex 15:20; 1Sa 18:6; Ps 33:9)12“The kings of the armies—they flee, they flee!” The women at home divide the spoil— (Nu 31:8; Jos 10:16; Jos 12:7; Jud 5:19; Jud 5:30; Ps 110:5)13though you men lie among the sheepfolds— the wings of a dove covered with silver, its pinions with shimmering gold. (Ge 49:14; Jud 5:16)14When the Almighty scatters kings there, let snow fall on Zalmon. (Jud 9:48)15O mountain of God, mountain of Bashan; O many-peaked[3] mountain, mountain of Bashan!16Why do you look with hatred, O many-peaked mountain, at the mount that God desired for his abode, yes, where the Lord will dwell forever? (De 12:5; Ps 78:54; Ps 87:1; Ps 132:13)17The chariots of God are twice ten thousand, thousands upon thousands; the Lord is among them; Sinai is now in the sanctuary. (2Ki 6:17; Hab 3:8)18You ascended on high, leading a host of captives in your train and receiving gifts among men, even among the rebellious, that the Lord God may dwell there. (Ex 29:45; Jud 5:12; Ps 7:7; Ps 47:5; Ps 78:60; Joh 14:23; Ac 1:9; Ac 2:4; Ac 2:33; Ro 5:8; Eph 4:8; 1Ti 1:13; Re 21:3)19Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation. (Isa 46:4)20Our God is a God of salvation, and to God, the Lord, belong deliverances from death. (De 32:39; Ec 7:18; Re 1:18)21But God will strike the heads of his enemies, the hairy crown of him who walks in his guilty ways. (Ps 110:6; Hab 3:13)22The Lord said, “I will bring them back from Bashan, I will bring them back from the depths of the sea, (Nu 21:33; Am 9:2)23that you may strike your feet in their blood, that the tongues of your dogs may have their portion from the foe.” (1Ki 21:19; 1Ki 22:38; Ps 58:10)24Your procession is[4] seen, O God, the procession of my God, my King, into the sanctuary—25the singers in front, the musicians last, between them virgins playing tambourines: (Ex 15:20; Jud 11:34; 1Ch 13:8; 1Ch 15:16; Ps 33:3; Ps 47:5)26“Bless God in the great congregation, the Lord, O you[5] who are of Israel’s fountain!” (De 33:28; Ps 22:25; Ps 26:12; Isa 48:1; Isa 51:1)27There is Benjamin, the least of them, in the lead, the princes of Judah in their throng, the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali. (Jud 5:18; 1Sa 9:21)28Summon your power, O God,[6] the power, O God, by which you have worked for us. (Ps 42:8)29Because of your temple at Jerusalem kings shall bear gifts to you. (1Ki 10:10; 1Ki 10:25; 2Ch 32:23; Ps 45:12; Ps 76:11; Isa 18:7)30Rebuke the beasts that dwell among the reeds, the herd of bulls with the calves of the peoples. Trample underfoot those who lust after tribute; scatter the peoples who delight in war.[7] (2Sa 8:2; 2Sa 8:6; Job 40:21; Ps 22:12; Isa 19:6; Eze 29:3; Eze 32:2)31Nobles shall come from Egypt; Cush shall hasten to stretch out her hands to God. (Ps 44:20; Ps 87:4; Isa 19:19; Isa 19:21; Isa 45:14; Zep 3:10)32O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord, (Ps 102:22)33to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. (De 10:14; De 33:26; 1Ki 8:27; Ps 18:10; Ps 29:4; Ps 46:6; Ps 104:3)34Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies. Psalm 68
New International Version
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. A song.
1May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him.2May you blow them away like smoke – as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God.3But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.4Sing to God, sing in praise of his name, extol him who rides on the clouds[1]; rejoice before him – his name is the Lord.5A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.6God sets the lonely in families,[2] he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.7When you, God, went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness,[3]8the earth shook, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel.9You gave abundant showers, O God; you refreshed your weary inheritance.10Your people settled in it, and from your bounty, God, you provided for the poor.11The Lord announces the word, and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng:12‘Kings and armies flee in haste; the women at home divide the plunder.13Even while you sleep among the sheepfolds,[4] the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver, its feathers with shining gold.’14When the Almighty[5] scattered the kings in the land, it was like snow fallen on Mount Zalmon.15Mount Bashan, majestic mountain, Mount Bashan, rugged mountain,16why gaze in envy, you rugged mountain, at the mountain where God chooses to reign, where the Lord himself will dwell for ever?17The chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands; the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.[6]18When you ascended on high, you took many captives; you received gifts from people, even from[7] the rebellious – that you,[8] Lord God, might dwell there.19Praise be to the Lord, to God our Saviour, who daily bears our burdens.20Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign Lord comes escape from death.21Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies, the hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.22The Lord says, ‘I will bring them from Bashan; I will bring them from the depths of the sea,23that your feet may wade in the blood of your foes, while the tongues of your dogs have their share.’24Your procession, God, has come into view, the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.25In front are the singers, after them the musicians; with them are the young women playing the tambourines.26Praise God in the great congregation; praise the Lord in the assembly of Israel.27There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading them, there the great throng of Judah’s princes, and there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.28Summon your power, God[9]; show us your strength, our God, as you have done before.29Because of your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring you gifts.30Rebuke the beast among the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations. Humbled, may the beast bring bars of silver. Scatter the nations who delight in war.31Envoys will come from Egypt; Cush[10] will submit herself to God.32Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth, sing praise to the Lord,33to him who rides across the highest heavens, the ancient heavens, who thunders with mighty voice.34Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the heavens.35You, God, are awesome in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!
Psalm 68
King James Version
1To the chief Musician, A Psalm or Song of David. Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.2As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God.3But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.4Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.5A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.6God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land .7O God, when thou wentest forth before thy people, when thou didst march through the wilderness; Selah:8The earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God: even Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.9Thou, O God, didst send a plentiful rain, whereby thou didst confirm thine inheritance, when it was weary.10Thy congregation hath dwelt therein: thou, O God, hast prepared of thy goodness for the poor.11The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it .12Kings of armies did flee apace: and she that tarried at home divided the spoil.13Though ye have lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold.14When the Almighty scattered kings in it, it was white as snow in Salmon.15The hill of God is as the hill of Bashan; an high hill as the hill of Bashan.16Why leap ye, ye high hills? this is the hill which God desireth to dwell in; yea, the LORD will dwell in it for ever.17The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place .18Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them .19Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah.20He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord belong the issues from death.21But God shall wound the head of his enemies, and the hairy scalp of such an one as goeth on still in his trespasses.22The Lord said, I will bring again from Bashan, I will bring my people again from the depths of the sea:23That thy foot may be dipped in the blood of thine enemies, and the tongue of thy dogs in the same.24They have seen thy goings, O God; even the goings of my God, my King, in the sanctuary.25The singers went before, the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with timbrels.26Bless ye God in the congregations, even the Lord, from the fountain of Israel.27There is little Benjamin with their ruler, the princes of Judah and their council, the princes of Zebulun, and the princes of Naphtali.28Thy God hath commanded thy strength: strengthen, O God, that which thou hast wrought for us.29Because of thy temple at Jerusalem shall kings bring presents unto thee.30Rebuke the company of spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the calves of the people, till every one submit himself with pieces of silver: scatter thou the people that delight in war.31Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.32Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the Lord; Selah:33To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, which were of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, and that a mighty voice.34Ascribe ye strength unto God: his excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the clouds.35O God, thou art terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. Blessed be God.
Psalm 68
New International Reader’s Version
For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.
1May God rise up and scatter his enemies. May they turn and run away from him.2May you, God, blow them away like smoke. As fire melts wax, so may God destroy sinful people.3But may those who do what is right be glad and filled with joy when they are with him. May they be happy and joyful.4Sing to God, sing praise to his name. Lift up a song to the God who rides on the clouds. Be glad when you are with him. His name is the LORD.5God is in his holy temple. He is a father to children whose fathers have died. He takes care of women whose husbands have died.6God gives lonely people a family. He sets prisoners free, and they go out singing. But those who refuse to obey him live in a land that is baked by the sun.7God, you led your people out. You marched through the desert.8The ground shook when you, the God of Sinai, appeared. The heavens poured down rain when you, the God of Israel, appeared.9God, you gave us plenty of rain. You renewed your worn-out land.10God, your people made their homes in it. From all your riches, you provided for those who were poor.11The Lord gives the message. The women who make it known are a huge group.12They said, ‘Kings and armies are running away. The women at home are dividing up the things the army took from their enemies.13Even while the soldiers sleep near the sheepfolds, God wins the battle for them. He gives the enemy’s silver and gold to Israel, his dove.’14The Mighty One has scattered the kings around the land. It was like snow falling on Mount Zalmon.15Mount Bashan is a majestic mountain. Mount Bashan is a very rocky mountain.16Why are you jealous of Mount Zion, you rocky mountain? That’s where God chooses to rule. That’s where the LORD himself will live for ever.17God has come with tens of thousands of his chariots. He has come with thousands and thousands of them. The Lord has come from Mount Sinai. He has entered his holy place.18When he went up to his place on high, he took many prisoners. He received gifts from people, even from those who refused to obey him. The LORD God went up to live on Mount Zion.19Give praise to the Lord. Give praise to God our Saviour. He carries our heavy loads day after day.20Our God is a God who saves. He is the King and the LORD. He saves us from death.21God will certainly smash the heads of his enemies. He will break the hairy heads of those who keep on sinning.22The Lord says, ‘I will bring your enemies from Bashan. I will bring them up from the bottom of the sea.23Then your feet can wade in their blood. The tongues of your dogs can lick up all the blood they want.’24God, those who worship you come marching into view. My God and King, those who follow you have entered the sacred tent.25The singers are walking in front. Next come the musicians. Young women playing tambourines are with them.26The leaders sing, ‘Praise God among all those who worship him. Praise the LORD in the community of Israel.’27The little tribe of Benjamin leads the worshippers. Next comes the great crowd of Judah’s princes. Then come the princes of Zebulun and the princes of Naphtali.28God, show us your power. Show us your strength. God, do as you have done before.29Do it from your temple at Jerusalem, where kings will bring you gifts.30Give a strong warning to Egypt, that beast among the tall grass. It is like a herd of bulls among the calves. May that beast bow down before you with gifts of silver. Scatter the nations who like to make war.31Messengers will come from Egypt. The people of Cush will be quick to bring gifts to you.32Sing to God, you kingdoms of the earth. Sing praise to the Lord.33He rides across the highest places in heaven. He rides across the ancient skies above. He thunders with his mighty voice.34Tell how powerful God is. He rules as king over Israel. The skies show how powerful he is.35How wonderful is God in his holy place! The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Give praise to God!
