1Aber die Kinder Israels taten wieder, was böse war in den Augen des HERRN; da gab sie der HERR in die Hand der Philister, 40 Jahre lang.2Es war aber ein Mann von Zorea, vom Geschlecht der Daniter, namens Manoach; und seine Frau war unfruchtbar und konnte keine Kinder bekommen.3Und der Engel des HERRN erschien der Frau und sprach zu ihr: Siehe doch! Du bist unfruchtbar und kannst keine Kinder bekommen; aber du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären!4Und nun hüte dich doch, dass du keinen Wein noch starkes Getränk trinkst und nichts Unreines isst!5Denn siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären; dem soll kein Schermesser auf das Haupt kommen; denn der Knabe soll ein Nasiräer Gottes sein von Mutterleib an, und er wird anfangen, Israel aus der Hand der Philister zu erretten!6Da kam die Frau und sagte es ihrem Mann und sprach: Ein Mann Gottes ist zu mir gekommen, und seine Gestalt war wie die Gestalt eines Engels Gottes, sehr schrecklich, sodass ich ihn nicht fragte, woher er komme, und er hat mir seinen Namen nicht genannt.7Und er sprach zu mir: Siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären; so trinke nun weder Wein noch starkes Getränk und iss nichts Unreines; denn der Knabe soll ein Nasiräer Gottes sein von Mutterleib an bis zum Tag seines Todes!8Da betete Manoach zu dem HERRN und sprach: Ach, mein Herr! Lass doch den Mann Gottes, den du gesandt hast, wieder zu uns kommen, damit er uns lehrt, was wir mit dem Knaben tun müssen, der geboren werden soll!9Und Gott erhörte die Stimme Manoachs, und der Engel Gottes kam wieder zu der Frau; sie saß aber auf dem Feld, und ihr Mann Manoach war nicht bei ihr.10Da lief die Frau rasch und berichtete es ihrem Mann und sprach zu ihm: Siehe, der Mann ist mir erschienen, der an jenem Tag zu mir kam!11Und Manoach machte sich auf und ging seiner Frau nach; und er kam zu dem Mann und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der Mann, der mit [meiner] Frau geredet hat? Er sprach: Ja, ich bin’s!12Und Manoach sprach: Wenn nun dein Wort eintrifft, was für eine Ordnung soll für den Knaben gelten, und was soll er tun?13Und der Engel des HERRN sprach zu Manoach: Von allem, was ich deiner Frau gesagt habe, soll sie sich enthalten;14sie soll nichts essen, was vom Weinstock kommt, und soll weder Wein noch starkes Getränk trinken und nichts Unreines essen; und alles, was ich ihr geboten habe, soll sie halten!15Und Manoach sprach zu dem Engel des HERRN: Lass dich doch von uns aufhalten, so wollen wir dir ein Ziegenböcklein zubereiten!16Aber der Engel des HERRN antwortete Manoach: Wenn du mich auch hier behieltest, so würde ich doch nicht von deiner Speise essen. Willst du aber ein Brandopfer darbringen, so sollst du es dem HERRN opfern! Manoach wusste nämlich nicht, dass es der Engel des HERRN war.17Und Manoach sprach zum Engel des HERRN: Was ist dein Name? Denn wenn dein Wort eintrifft, so wollen wir dich ehren!18Aber der Engel des HERRN sprach zu ihm: Warum fragst du nach meinem Namen? Er ist ja wunderbar!19Da nahm Manoach das Ziegenböcklein und das Speisopfer und opferte es dem HERRN auf dem Felsen, und Er tat ein Wunder; Manoach aber und seine Frau sahen zu.20Denn als die Flamme vom Altar zum Himmel stieg, da fuhr der Engel des HERRN in der Flamme des Altars hinauf. Als Manoach und seine Frau dies sahen, fielen sie auf ihr Angesicht zur Erde.21Der Engel des HERRN erschien aber Manoach und seiner Frau nicht mehr. Da erkannte Manoach, dass es der Engel des HERRN war.22Und Manoach sprach zu seiner Frau: Wir müssen sicherlich sterben, weil wir Gott gesehen haben!23Aber seine Frau antwortete ihm: Wenn es dem HERRN gefallen hätte, uns zu töten, so hätte er das Brandopfer und das Speisopfer nicht von unseren Händen angenommen; er hätte uns auch weder dies alles gezeigt noch uns jetzt so etwas hören lassen!24Und die Frau gebar einen Sohn und nannte ihn Simson. Und der Knabe wuchs heran, und der HERR segnete ihn.25Und der Geist des HERRN fing an ihn zu treiben im »Lager Dans«, zwischen Zorea und Estaol.

Samson is born
1Once again the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD handed them over to the Philistines for 40 years.2A certain man from Zorah was named Manoah. He was from the tribe of Dan. Manoah had a wife who wasn’t able to have children.3The angel of the LORD appeared to Manoah’s wife. He said, ‘You are not able to have children. But you are going to become pregnant. You will have a baby boy.4Make sure you do not drink any kind of wine. Also make sure you do not eat anything that is “unclean”.5You will become pregnant. You will have a son. The hair on his head must never be cut. That is because the boy will be a Nazirite. He will be set apart to God from the day he is born. He will take the lead in saving Israel from the power of the Philistines.’6Then the woman went to her husband. She told him, ‘A man of God came to me. He looked like an angel of God. His appearance was so amazing that it filled me with great wonder. I didn’t ask him where he came from. And he didn’t tell me his name.7But he said to me, “You will become pregnant. You will have a son. So do not drink any kind of wine. Do not eat anything that is ‘unclean’. That is because the boy will be a Nazirite. He will belong to God in a special way from the day he is born until the day he dies.” ’8Then Manoah prayed to the LORD. He said, ‘Pardon your servant, Lord. I beg you to let the man of God you sent to us come again. He told us we would have a son. We want the man of God to teach us how to bring up the boy.’9God heard Manoah. And the angel of God came again to the woman. He came while she was out in the field. But her husband Manoah wasn’t with her.10The woman hurried to her husband. She told him, ‘He’s here! The man who appeared to me the other day is here!’11Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he spoke to him. He said, ‘Are you the man who talked to my wife?’ ‘I am’, he replied.12So Manoah asked him, ‘What will happen when your words come true? What rules should we follow for the boy’s life and work?’13The angel of the LORD answered him. He said, ‘Your wife must do everything I have told her to do.14She must not eat anything that comes from grapevines. She must not drink any kind of wine. She must not eat anything that is “unclean”. She must do everything I have commanded her to do.’15Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, ‘We would like you to stay and eat. We want to prepare a young goat for you.’16The angel of the LORD replied, ‘Even if I stay, I will not eat any of your food. But if you still want to prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to the LORD.’ Manoah didn’t realise it was the angel of the LORD.17Then Manoah asked the angel of the LORD a question. ‘What is your name?’ he said. ‘We want to honour you when your word comes true.’18The angel replied, ‘Why are you asking me what my name is? You would not be able to understand it.’19Manoah got a young goat. He brought it along with the grain offering. He sacrificed it on a rock to the LORD. Then the LORD did an amazing thing. It happened while Manoah and his wife were watching.20A flame blazed up from the altar towards heaven. The angel of the LORD rose up in the flame. When Manoah and his wife saw it, they fell with their faces to the ground.21The angel of the LORD didn’t show himself again to Manoah and his wife. Then Manoah realised it was the angel of the LORD.22‘We’re going to die!’ he said to his wife. ‘We’ve seen God!’23But his wife answered, ‘The LORD doesn’t want to kill us. If he did, he wouldn’t have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from us. He wouldn’t have shown us all these things. He wouldn’t have told us we’re going to have a son.’24Later, the woman had a baby boy. She named him Samson. As he grew up, the LORD blessed him.25The Spirit of the LORD began to work in his life. It happened while he was in Mahaneh Dan. That place is between Zorah and Eshtaol.
