1Es geschah aber, als Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem*, hörte, dass Josua Ai erobert und an ihm den Bann vollstreckt hatte, und dass er es mit Ai samt seinem König ebenso gemacht hatte wie mit Jericho und seinem König, und dass die Einwohner von Gibeon mit Israel Frieden gemacht hatten und in ihrer Mitte wohnten,2da fürchteten sie sich sehr; denn Gibeon war eine große Stadt, wie eine der Königsstädte*, und es war größer als Ai, und alle seine Männer waren tapfere Krieger.3Da sandte Adoni-Zedek, der König von Jerusalem, [Boten] zu Hoham, dem König von Hebron, und zu Piream, dem König von Jarmut, und zu Japhia, dem König von Lachis, und zu Debir, dem König von Eglon, und ließ ihnen sagen:4Kommt herauf zu mir und helft mir, dass wir Gibeon schlagen; denn es hat mit Josua und den Kindern Israels Frieden gemacht!5Da vereinigten sich die fünf Könige der Amoriter und zogen hinauf: der König von Jerusalem, der König von Hebron, der König von Jarmut, der König von Lachis und der König von Eglon mit allen ihren Heeren; und sie belagerten Gibeon und bekämpften es.6Aber die Männer von Gibeon sandten Boten zu Josua ins Lager nach Gilgal und ließen ihm sagen: Zieh deine Hand nicht ab von deinen Knechten; komm rasch zu uns herauf und errette uns und hilf uns; denn alle Könige der Amoriter, die im Bergland wohnen, haben sich gegen uns versammelt!7Und Josua zog hinauf von Gilgal, er und das ganze Kriegsvolk mit ihm und alle tapferen Krieger.8Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht vor ihnen, denn ich habe sie in deine Hand gegeben; niemand von ihnen wird vor dir bestehen können!9So kam Josua plötzlich über sie; denn er zog die ganze Nacht hindurch von Gilgal herauf.10Und der HERR erschreckte sie vor Israel und schlug sie in einer großen Schlacht bei Gibeon; und sie jagten ihnen nach auf dem Weg nach der Anhöhe von Beth-Horon, und sie schlugen sie bis Aseka und bis Makkeda.11Und es geschah, als sie vor Israel flohen und am Abhang von Beth-Horon waren, da ließ der HERR große Steine vom Himmel auf sie fallen bis Aseka, sodass sie starben; und die Zahl derer, die durch die Hagelsteine starben, war größer als die Zahl derer, welche die Söhne Israels mit dem Schwert umbrachten.12Da redete Josua zu dem HERRN an dem Tag, als der HERR die Amoriter vor den Söhnen Israels dahingab, und sprach in Gegenwart Israels: Sonne, stehe still in Gibeon, und du, Mond, im Tal Ajalon!13Da stand die Sonne still, und der Mond blieb stehen, bis sich das Volk an seinen Feinden gerächt hatte. Ist dies nicht geschrieben im Buch des Aufrichtigen? So blieb die Sonne mitten am Himmel stehen und eilte nicht unterzugehen, beinahe einen ganzen Tag.14Und kein Tag war diesem gleich, weder zuvor noch danach, dass der HERR [so] auf die Stimme eines Mannes hörte; denn der HERR kämpfte für Israel.15Und Josua zog wieder ins Lager nach Gilgal, und ganz Israel mit ihm.16Aber jene fünf Könige waren geflohen und hatten sich in der Höhle von Makkeda versteckt.17Da wurde dem Josua gemeldet: Die fünf Könige sind gefunden worden, verborgen in der Höhle von Makkeda!18Und Josua sprach: So wälzt große Steine vor den Eingang der Höhle und stellt Männer davor, um sie zu bewachen!19Ihr aber steht nicht still, jagt euren Feinden nach und schlagt ihre Nachhut; lasst sie nicht in ihre Städte kommen; denn der HERR, euer Gott, hat sie in eure Hand gegeben!20Als nun Josua und die Söhne Israels sie vollständig geschlagen hatten in einer sehr großen Schlacht, bis sie aufgerieben waren, und das, was von ihnen übrig blieb, in die festen Städte entkommen war,21da zog das ganze Volk mit Frieden wieder zu Josua zurück, in das Lager nach Makkeda; niemand regte seine Zunge gegen die Söhne Israels.22Josua aber sprach: Öffnet den Eingang der Höhle und bringt jene fünf Könige aus der Höhle heraus zu mir!23Und sie machten es so und brachten jene fünf Könige aus der Höhle heraus zu ihm: den König von Jerusalem, den König von Hebron, den König von Jarmut, den König von Lachis und den König von Eglon.24Als sie aber diese Könige zu Josua herausgeführt hatten, rief Josua alle Männer Israels zu sich und sprach zu den Obersten des Kriegsvolkes, die mit ihm gezogen waren: Kommt herzu und setzt euren Fuß auf den Nacken dieser Könige! Und sie kamen herzu und setzten ihnen den Fuß auf den Nacken.25Da sprach Josua zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht und verzagt nicht; seid stark und mutig; denn so wird der HERR an allen euren Feinden handeln, gegen die ihr kämpft!26Und danach schlug sie Josua und tötete sie und hängte sie an fünf Holzstämme. Und sie hingen an den Holzstämmen bis zum Abend.27Als aber die Sonne unterging, gebot Josua, dass man sie von den Holzstämmen abnehme und sie in die Höhle werfe, in der sie sich verborgen hatten; und sie legten große Steine vor den Eingang der Höhle; die sind noch dort bis zu diesem Tag.28An diesem Tag nahm Josua auch Makkeda ein und schlug es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes samt seinem König und vollstreckte an ihnen und an allen Seelen, die darin waren, den Bann; und er ließ keinen übrig bleiben, der entkommen wäre; und er machte es mit dem König von Makkeda ebenso, wie er es mit dem König von Jericho gemacht hatte.
Die Eroberung der südlichen Landeshälfte
29Da zog Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm von Makkeda nach Libna und kämpfte gegen Libna.30Und der HERR gab es auch in die Hand Israels samt seinem König; und er schlug es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, und alle Seelen, die darin waren, und ließ keinen darin übrig bleiben, der entkommen wäre; und er machte es mit seinem König ebenso, wie er es mit dem König von Jericho gemacht hatte.31Danach zog Josua und ganz Israel mit ihm von Libna nach Lachis und belagerte und bekämpfte es.32Und der HERR gab Lachis in die Hand Israels, sodass sie es am zweiten Tag einnahmen und mit der Schärfe des Schwertes schlugen, samt allen Seelen, die darin waren — genau so, wie er es mit Libna gemacht hatte.33Zu derselben Zeit zog Horam, der König von Geser, hinauf, um Lachis zu helfen. Aber Josua schlug ihn samt all seinem Volk, bis ihm nicht einer übrig blieb, der entkommen wäre.34Und Josua zog mit ganz Israel von Lachis nach Eglon und belagerte und bekämpfte es;35und sie nahmen es an jenem Tag ein und schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, und er vollstreckte an jenem Tag den Bann an allen Seelen, die darin waren, genau so, wie er es mit Lachis gemacht hatte.36Danach zog Josua mit ganz Israel von Eglon nach Hebron hinauf und bekämpfte es,37und sie nahmen es ein und schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, samt seinem König und allen seinen Städten und allen Seelen, die darin waren; und er ließ nicht einen übrig bleiben, der entkommen wäre — genau so, wie er es mit Eglon gemacht hatte; und er vollstreckte den Bann an [Hebron] und an allen Seelen, die darin waren.38Dann wandte sich Josua mit ganz Israel nach Debir und bekämpfte es;39und er nahm es ein samt seinem König und allen seinen Städten und schlug sie mit der Schärfe des Schwertes und vollstreckte den Bann an allen Seelen, die darin waren, er ließ nicht einen übrig bleiben, der entkommen wäre; wie er es mit Hebron und Libna samt ihrem König gemacht hatte, genau so machte er es mit Debir und seinem König.40So schlug Josua das ganze Land, das Bergland und den Negev und die Schephela und die Abhänge*, samt allen ihren Königen; und er ließ nicht einen übrig bleiben, der entkommen wäre; und er vollstreckte den Bann an allem, was Odem hatte, wie es der HERR, der Gott Israels, geboten hatte.41Und Josua schlug sie von Kadesch-Barnea an bis Gaza und das ganze Land Gosen* bis Gibeon.42Und Josua eroberte alle diese Könige samt ihrem Land auf einmal; denn der HERR, der Gott Israels, kämpfte für Israel.43Und Josua kehrte mit ganz Israel wieder in das Lager zurück nach Gilgal.

The sun stands still
1Adoni-Zedek was the king of Jerusalem. He heard that Joshua had captured Ai. He found out that the city had been set apart to the LORD in a special way to be destroyed. He heard that Joshua had done to Ai and its king the same thing he had done to Jericho and its king. Adoni-Zedek heard that the people of Gibeon had made a peace treaty with Israel. He also found out that they were living among the Israelites.2The things he heard alarmed him and his people very much. That’s because Gibeon was an important city. It was like one of the royal cities. It was larger than Ai. All its men were good soldiers.3So Adoni-Zedek, the king of Jerusalem, made an appeal to Hoham, the king of Hebron. He appealed to Piram, the king of Jarmuth. He appealed to Japhia, the king of Lachish. He also made an appeal to Debir, the king of Eglon.4‘Come up and help me attack Gibeon,’ he said. ‘Its people have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.’5Then the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon gathered their armies together. Those five Amorite kings moved all their troops into position to fight against Gibeon. Then they attacked it.6Joshua was in the camp at Gilgal. The people of Gibeon sent a message to him there. They said, ‘Don’t desert us. We serve you. Come up to us quickly! Save us! Help us! All the Amorite kings from the central hill country have gathered their armies together to fight against us.’7So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his whole army. The army included all his best fighting men.8The LORD said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them. I have handed them over to you. Not one of them will be able to fight against you and win.’9Joshua marched all night from Gilgal. He took the Amorite armies by surprise.10The LORD threw them into a panic as Israel marched towards them. Then Joshua and the Israelites won a complete victory over them at Gibeon. The Israelites chased them along the road that goes up to Beth Horon. They struck them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah.11The Amorites tried to escape as Israel marched towards them. They ran down the road from Beth Horon to Azekah. Then the LORD threw large hailstones down on them. The hailstones killed more of them than the swords of the Israelites did.12So the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel. On that day Joshua spoke to the LORD while the Israelites were listening. He said, ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon. And you, moon, stand still over the Valley of Aijalon.’13So the sun stood still. The moon stopped. They didn’t move again until the nation won the battle over its enemies. You can read about it in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky. It didn’t go down for about a full day.14There has never been a day like it before or since. It was a day when the LORD listened to a mere human being. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!15Joshua and his whole army returned to the camp at Gilgal.
Joshua kills the five Amorite kings
16The five Amorite kings had run away. They had hidden in the cave at Makkedah.17Joshua was told that the five kings had been found. He was also told that they were hiding in the cave at Makkedah.18He said, ‘Roll some large rocks up to the opening of the cave. Put some men there to guard it.19But keep on going! Chase your enemies! Attack them from behind. Don’t let them get back to their cities. The LORD your God has handed them over to you.’20So Joshua and the men of Israel had complete victory over them. They killed almost every one of them. But a few escaped. They went back to their cities that had high walls around them.21Then Israel’s whole army returned safely to Joshua. He was in the camp at Makkedah. No one in the land dared to say anything against the Israelites.22Joshua said, ‘Open up the cave. Bring those five kings out to me.’23So Joshua’s men brought the kings out of the cave. They were the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon.24The men brought them to Joshua. Then he sent for all the men of Israel. He spoke to the army commanders who had come with him. He said, ‘Come here. Put your feet on the necks of these kings.’ So they came forward and placed their feet on the necks of the kings.25Joshua said to them, ‘Don’t be afraid. Don’t lose hope. Be strong and brave. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.’26Joshua put the five kings to death. He stuck a pole through each of their bodies. Then he set the poles up where people could see the bodies. He left them there until evening.27At sunset Joshua ordered his men to take down the bodies. So they took them down from the poles and threw them into the cave where the kings had been hiding. They placed large rocks at the opening of the cave. And the rocks are still there to this day.
The campaign against the cities in the south
28That day Joshua captured Makkedah. He cut down its people and their king. He totally destroyed everyone in it. He didn’t leave anyone alive. He did to the king of Makkedah the same thing he had done to the king of Jericho.29Joshua moved on from Makkedah to Libnah. Israel’s whole army went with him. They attacked Libnah.30The LORD also handed that city and its king over to Israel. Joshua destroyed the city. He and his men killed everyone in it with their swords. He didn’t leave anyone alive there. He did to its king the same thing he had done to the king of Jericho.31Joshua moved on from Libnah to Lachish. Israel’s whole army went with him. The men took up their battle positions. Then Joshua attacked Lachish.32The LORD handed it over to Israel. Joshua captured the city on the second day of the battle. He destroyed the city. He and his men killed everyone in it with their swords. He had done the same thing to Libnah.33While all that was happening, Horam had come up to help Lachish. He was the king of Gezer. But Joshua won the battle over him and his army. No one was left alive.34Joshua moved on from Lachish to Eglon. Israel’s whole army went with him. They took up their battle positions. Then they attacked Eglon.35They captured it that same day. They totally destroyed everyone in it with their swords. They had done the same thing to Lachish.36Joshua went up from Eglon to Hebron. Israel’s whole army went with him. Then they attacked Hebron.37They captured the city. They destroyed it and its villages. They killed all its people and their king with their swords. They didn’t leave anyone alive. They totally destroyed the city and everyone in it. They had done the same thing at Eglon.38Joshua turned back and attacked Debir. Israel’s whole army went with him.39They captured the city, its king and its villages. They totally destroyed everyone in Debir with their swords. They didn’t leave anyone alive. They did to Debir and its king the same thing they had done to Libnah and its king. They had also done the same thing to Hebron.40So Joshua brought the whole area under his control. That included the central hill country and the Negev Desert. It included the western hills and the mountain slopes. It also included all the kings in that whole area. Joshua didn’t leave anyone alive. He totally destroyed everyone who breathed. He did just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.41Joshua brought everyone from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza under his control. He did the same thing to everyone from the whole area of Goshen to Gibeon.42He won the battle over all those kings and their lands. He did it in one campaign. That’s because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.43Then Joshua returned to the camp at Gilgal. Israel’s whole army went with him.
